“Grand & artisitic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 December 2013

This was the first time that I've heard a church organ being played with such dramatic effect in a church. The music from those thousands of pipes reach you with such intensity that you are transported immediately to some hollywood horror flick. Eerie & lingering!
The architecture, needless to say, is what makes it the most popular and noticeable landmark in town. A fee of 5 Euros will take you to the tower where you realize the grandeur of the clock. All 4 sides of the tower have a huge piece of film-art on the walls, even forming a background for the clock!
The views from the tower of the city are splendid! Definitely worth it!

“A great area to visit while walking in the Capitol City”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 December 2013 via mobile

I was walking back from dropping my car off at the rental company, it was easy to spot and made finding my way back to the hostel, much easier. It was a nice stop along the way, the building is more massive then I first expected, needed some distance to photograph the entire building. Being an Icon of Iceland, i highly recommend this location!

“Very unusual”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 December 2013

Really liked the modern design and clean lines of this Lutheran church. A great organist was practising while we were there which was extremely impressive. Staff very homestly said it would not be worthwhile going up the tower that morning because it was so misty. Pity to miss, but appreciated saving money by their honesty.

“A must see - see the outside around sunset”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 December 2013

Hallgrimskirkja, Iceland's biggest church, has a stunning facade that is a must see when in Reykjavik. The facade offer dramatic picture taking opportunities at sunset/dusk.

The view from the Bell Tower (cost 6 Kronar to go up) offers a a good panorama of the city - giving you a sense of the size and architecture of the city. It also gives you a "lay of the land" - where you are located in the city, the water around you, how close the domestic airport is to downtown.

The interior is stark yet inviting. The interior is simple, grey, with tall lines. The church interior had no stained glass windows and the day we were there the sky and walls were about the same colour. Because of this simple interior it would be interesting to see the church at different times - with changing light and sky colours - I think this would have a big impact on the way the church looks day to day. In some way this seems to blend the outside and inside of the church. The outside of the church with it's tall lines and gray colour also would look very different with changing skies and light.

The pews are unique - the backs swing so you can sit facing either the back or the front of the church. Facing the back you see the beautiful pipe organ, turning toward the front you face the altar, the baptismal font, and the pulpit.

Surprisingly in such a big church there is no big cross, there is a statue of Jesus at the entrance. This continues the simple and elegant feeling of the church. The baptismal font is elegant and worth looking at.

“Great Views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 November 2013

This landmark can be seen from most places in Reykjavik. If you think the outside is impressive, wait till you get inside. Stunning. Whilst there, the organist was playing. You can take the lift to the top of the church for about £3.50 each, well worth doing as the view from the top was quite literally breath taking. Wrap up warm and prepare for the wind!
