Owner description: The IMAGINE PEACE TOWER is a work of art conceived by the legendary artist and peace advocate Yoko Ono as a beacon to world peace. It is dedicated to the memory of John Lennon. The IMAGINE PEACE TOWER is located on Viðey Island in Kollafjörður and it's light is well visible from Reykjavík city and the capital area. Every year the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER emerges an hour after sunset between 9 October (Lennon's day of birth) and 8 December (Lennon's demise). In addition the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER emerges for one week on winter solstice, on New Year's Eve, for one week during spring equinox and few other selected dates. The ever changing weather conditions play an interesting part to the strength, intensity and brilliance of the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER’S light. During it's lighting time guided tours are avaiable called the Imagine Peace Tour. The tour is dedicated to the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER and Lennon’s and Ono’s continuing campaign for world peace. It is run by Elding with departures from Reykjavík's Old harbour. The tour unites history, art and nature is an interesting way.

“Peaceful”

We saw the light when travelling to see the Northern Lights. It is fantastic that it isn't on all year round so that it can be really enjoyed. It is a great sight and allows you to reflect.

“Interesting, depending on who you consult.”

The tower light was on when we went on a search for the Northern Lights. It's very bright and irritating. But it is a good beacon if you are lost at sea.

“A Tribute to John Lennon”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 March 2014

Yoko Ono had this built as a tribute to John. It is quite visible from far away. To me, it conjures up nice thoughts about the introspective Beatle.

“Use your imagination”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 March 2014

We visited the first night of the Equinox, John and Yoko's Wedding Anniversary.
I expected to be there for the actual lighting but our trip arrived about 30 minutes later.
It was a very strange experience. Daylight ferries run during May - September but this of course was in the dark and there we were, about 30 of us walking around Videy Island in almost pitch darkness, our two guides having torches and the light of the tower being our only assistance.
Having said that there were no accidents.
The wind was very strong up on top of the small hill where you get a good view down onto the 'wishing well' that houses the tower of light and across the bay to Reykjavik.
The Peace Tower is very well thought out, it is unique and relatively few people have ever experienced what we have (a max of 45 people per night and it's only light for around 70 days per year).
For that alone it's well worth a visit.
The reason that I haven't given it a 5 is because its beam is nothing light it looks in photos. It is visible from the shore as a faint beam and not as a powerful one that lights up the heavens.
If however you photograph it with the flash on the pictures are remarkable.
If you are the hardy sort who can handle a choppy 15-minute ferry crossing, a cold (very) stiff wind and tramping around undulating ground then it's well worth a visit.
If not, then wait for better conditions - it's still worth a visit.
