“comfort above all”
Reviewed 11 August 2014

If I ever return to Iceland, as I would really like to, I will definitely opt for the hotel Marina, and thus for several reasons: it is located practically in the center, it has excellent playful funny design features, charming friendly staff, excellent food. I would pick the room towards the marina, because the rooms facing the street are a bit noisy in the morning when the road turns into a major traffic artery. Otherwise the hotel is not above reproach. I do not even mind bathroom with the glass doors. Gangi þér vel Marina hotel :)

Room Tip: I think the rooms towards marina are quieter.

Our double room was immaculately clean with modern furnishings, and there was plenty of comfy nooks to relax in the lobby. The service of all staff members was professional. Arnar, the front desk staff for nights, especially deserves to be recognized for his outstanding and personable service.

The breakfast was a varied buffet of both hot and local foods, all deliciously prepared, especially the bread! I appreciated that the hotel was loyal to Icelandic products, and the hotel introduced me to some quality skincare products and a beautiful wool blanket that we later purchased. Close to the infamous pylsur hot dog stand and downtown Reykjavik!

We were in Room 404 which faces the harbor. All of the rooms on the 4th floor have small balconies, which was lovely. Note that the hotel faces a working ship repair yard, so it may be a bit loud in the mornings. The rooms are quite small but are very comfortable. Who goes on vacation to stay in the room, anyway? On a map it seems like it might be far away from the “main” part of downtown Reykjavik, but everything was easily walkable from the hotel’s location. There is free parking on the streets around the hotel. There is a walking/running path you can pick up behind the hotel that goes all the way along the harbor for several miles. I ran one morning and it was quite safe. The staff is pleasant and helpful with ideas and suggestions of sightseeing and day trips. The hotel décor is whimsical but also has touches that are a nod to the harbor and seafaring life. Would recommend including the breakfast buffet with your room if you can afford it. The buffet includes a wide array of breakfast items, from oatmeal with plenty of toppings, dry cereal, herb and cheese egg “pie”, hard-boiled egg slices, delicious homemade breads, jams, to-die-for Icelandic butter, skyr yogurt, pastries, smoked fish, meats and cheeses, juices, water, coffee and teas. We did not dine in the restaurant because it didn’t have much in the way of vegetarian options, but each evening after dinner out we went downstairs to the bar area or the common area to have nightcaps with our friends, and recap the day’s adventures. Highly recommend the craft cocktails from the bar; the bartenders are excellent and friendly, and the cocktails are different and interesting, using local herbs and house-made infusions.

Room Tip: If you book through their website, you get free wifi in your room.

Hi Shiba_fan,
and thank you for your excellent review, we are so happy to hear that you liked your stay at Reykjavik Marina this much - and a big like on your morning run along the ocean side! We are proud of our breakfast selection and appreciate you mentioning that but at the same time sorry to have too few vegetarian options on our menu, that could be something to look into. Nice to hear that you enjoyed Slippbarinn and our cocktails, but they are our pride and joy!

Best of thanks,
Erla

We stayed here on our last night in Iceland. It was one of our worst nights sleep. The beds were comfortable but the blinds don't block the light and it's light all night in summer. The road noise was also loud, we had been used to complete silence at night elsewhere in Iceland. Rooms on the marina side may be better.
The bathroom was functional but due to the sliding door with a large gap in it there is little privacy!
The bar next door in lower part of hotel is lively! Parking is nearby in another street although you can unload near the front door.
This was an expensive choice but not one of the best.

Dear traveller,
thank you for your review. We´re sorry for your bad night sleep at Reykjavik Marina. The sun shines bright during the night here in Iceland and yes, it can be difficult to sleep that way despite the blinds. Our hotel is located in the center of the city so yes there is some street noise at times but usually very quite at night by the marina, were we will certainly reserve a room for you next time!
Glad you had a chance to experience the lively Slippbar down stairs, where both locals and guests mingle with the best cocktails in town.

Warmly,
Erla

We stayed at the Marina Hotel for a total of 5 nights in June and July. The room was contemporary, very clean, and had a view of the harbor/boatyard. A variety of good restaurants and cafes, from burgers to seafood, were very close by. In addition the hotel has a very popular restaurant/bar. Location was good for walking to Harpa and the main shopping street. The breakfast buffet (included in our booking) was very good with lots of good choices. Two of the front desk staff deserve praise for attending to all of our needs. Sunna and Vigdis were so nice and helpful. The Marina should be thankful they have them! We would definitely stay there again!

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the harborside, upper floor.

We just got back from staying at the Marina hotel, it was the last hotel we stayed in after being on an extended trip through 4 countries - this was one of our FAVORITE hotels. The staff are AMAZING! We checked in really late and there was a problem with our reservation, a room mix up. Instead of making it a big deal, it was quickly addressed with a promise of the longer solution being decided in the morning (it involved the possibility of moving rooms for two of us). When leavening for the our day of touring, we stopped by the desk and were assured that when we got back everything would be sorted out for us and if we were to be moved they would help us with that. When we returned, the solution was worked out and we were delighted with the outcome. I would recommend when reserving to add the breakfast to your reservation, they have a lovely spread that has something for everyone. The yogurt was wonderful! I should note that we traveled as a group of 2 adults and 2 children, and the kids loved the hotel. Yes, the bathrooms are small, but your there to see the sites - it functions as needed. And yes the frosted glass is different, but you cannot see through it. Rooms are small, so are most of the hotel rooms in Europe. We had similar sized rooms in Sweden, Norway and Munich. The beds here were very comfortable. Wifi worked great as well. Bar/Restaurant was lovely and a great place to rest after a long day of sight seeing. Location is also great, very close to the center of town. Easy walk to everything.

The staff at the Hotel Reykjavik Marina is just wonderful. They are so friendly and so helpful I cannot say enough good things about them. I stayed for 5 nights in July (just got home) with the exception of 1 night that we flew north to Akureyri for the night. We actually left Akureyri early because we could not get back "home" to the Marina hotel. The atmosphere is so welcoming and so cozy you just are instantly at home there. I had an Attic room with the sea view. Worth every penny to spend the extra money for that. I so enjoyed sitting on my balcony looking at the mountains across the harbor. I read reviews about how small the bathrooms are and about the glass doors and I do agree with them. Although I don't think I would ever consider a different hotel in Reykjavik and I can't wait to go back there, that is their one negative. But that negative is so tiny compared to the positives that it is something I can live with, I would maybe feel differently if I was sharing the room with someone that I am not super close to though because you really don't feel like you have any privacy in the bathrooms. The glass is frosted but it is translucent. But back to the positives. The beds are very comfortable and the have a down comforter with a fresh cover. The room is modern but comfy, the reception area is filled with lots of comfortable nooks where you can sit and have a glass of wine or a cup of coffee. The food at the Slip Bar is wonderful, and back to their biggest asset... their staff is amazing! I highly recommend this hotel to anyone. I am VERY picky about hotel cleanliness and they are tops! Also, just a tip, if you take a short walk behind the Viking Maritime Museum that is right next to the hotel, you will find a delicious Ice Cream place that is open till 23:30. We went twice after discovering it :)

Room Tip: The Attic Room with sea view is worth the extra money! Book it!

Dear traveler,
we want to thank you for your excellent review! So proud and happy to read about you feeling at home with us and complimenting our staff like that. We know that our bathrooms are small and that the frosted glass can be sensitive for some, but glad to hear that other things like view, food, cleanliness and friendliness made your stay with us. And yes, we know, our food is top of the world, but that ice cream shop is just sooo good...!
See you next time.

Best regards,
Erla
