We visited this gallery and what a complete waste of time it all was. There was one huge room with loads of black tape on the floor and several fans on their sides, continually blowing the tapes in swirls....I think a kindergarten could have planned this. We glanced into the other rooms and they were all terribly boring, so we made a quick exit.

Even the gallery staff seemed bemused and slightly embarassed by the exhibits and we were so pleased that we hadn't wasted any money there, having purchased Welcome Cards which gave free admission. I really couldn't recommend a visit to this place.

This was on our welcome card.Located close to the harbour-Hafnarhusið downtown. They tried to throw us out for not paying even though we had a sticker on.This was modern and contempory art. First display overturned fans and dvd tape.Upper floors have video presentations which I just don't get then an area of fab pop art.

Nice modern art museum, worth a visit. When we visited it was very quiet, so we had plenty of time to see every item. The museumshop was also very nice.

We went to two of the Reykjavik Art Museum sites, the Hafnarhusið downtown on Tryggvagata and the Kjarvalsstaðir site further out near Perlan. Both were impressive. Hafnarhusið will probably be of great interest to those favoring modern and contemporary art, especially since Erró receives much attention there. For us, though, one of the great discoveries of our trip to Iceland (our first) was finding the work of Johannes Kjarval. We had heard about it before we went to Iceland but had little sense of its nature or impact. We went to the National Gallery (Listasafn Íslands) and found ourselves deeply struck by the Kjarval oils and watercolor there (along with the brilliantly multidirectional work of Sara Riel), and the impression of Kjarval was deepened and intensified by what we saw in the two large exhibition spaces at Kjarvalsstaðir later, where several of his works are in each of the two large exhibition spaces along with a selection of many other artists. Kjarval covers a huge stylistic range, for some commentators a limitation, but we felt that his work had great strength across that vast range. Many other impressive painters in Kjarvalsstadir make this a museum much worth a visit.

I have just visited today (august 29 2013) and really liked the exhibit we saw here. I am not huge on museums, so the two rooms of art was enough for me to get a sense of some culture and art. Buying admission gives you admission to the other locations of the museums as well, so that is well worth it. I think other people misunderstand how small this museum is. I enjoyed the current exhibit (1900-1950 icelandic art) and saw just enough so I didnt get bored. The bus stops right across the street so instead of walking back we took the bus, which was fast. we walked there from the main city center and it was quick and easy. I recommend stopping here, it won't take long and its cheap! There's a cafe inside as well, so some people may be interested in that.
