“Good location, spacious room”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 June 2012

We stayed here for 2 nights and upgraded our room to a 1 bedroom apartment to allow for an early check-in as we arrived in the morning and were tired after 16 days of travelling around Iceland. The room had a seating area and a little kitchen. The kitchen was basic and unfortunately we had no microwave. The bathroom is big enough and so was the bedroom. The only minor points were the temperature in the room (as the sun is shining all day on the big windows) & noisy - mainly upstairs - neighbors. Breakfast was good, but needs to be replenished much quicker. It's located near the main shopping street and thus served as an excellent location for exploring Reykjavik.

We just completed a 4 night stay at the Fosshotel Baron. The hotel is in an excellent location, 2 short blocks from the main shopping street, a few blocks from the old harbor area and its tourist attractions, and within a 5 minute walk from a good supermarket.

We had a 2 bedroom apartment. The apartment is functional, if somewhat dated. The kitchen was decently equipped, but not great. There is a small fridge, a 2 burner stove, a microwave, a coffee maker, and a toaster. The microwave isn't a grill, so there is no oven capability, which is somewhat unusual for an aparthotel. The bathroom is small but functional. The breakfast downstairs is just okay; the breakfast rooms are crowded, and food isn't replaced as quickly as it should be.

Wifi is free downstairs, and worked fine as well in our room on the 1st floor. The speed was very good.

Overall, a good hotel in a good location. Certainly not a luxury hotel, but more than as acceptable as home base for tourism.

We stayed for two nights (not consecutive) at this hotel and found the lodging to be a bit rundown. For example, our small room on the first stay had a window with a crack in it, a sink with a crack and soiled carpeting. The tiny bathroom offered a shower with an extremely slippery floor. We arrived in Reykjavik on a red eye from the United States but could not check in until 4 p.m. After wandering the city for a while, we became too tired to continue and ended up sitting in the small lobby for three hours until the official check-in time.

During our second stay, the hotel was overrun with tour groups and we got upgraded to a suite because all the standard rooms were taken. The suite was spacious and in better condition than our previous room. The bathroom, however, was tiny with no space for toiletries.

It was a quick walk to the harbor, shopping areas and myriad restaurants.. A supermarket was behind the hotel.

The buffet breakfast had a variety of items, including cereals, fruit, cold cuts, yogurt, pastries and eggs. Unfortunately, the breakfast room could not handle the demand of a full hotel. We had to wait for a table and the buffet ran out of plates for a while.

The lobby also could not easily accommodate the number of guests. Many checked out at noon and then waited for a 1 p.m. pickup for the airport. Because of the limited number of seats, most had to stand for an hour. I asked at the desk if the breakfast room could be opened to provide seating and was told that this was not possible.

For the best possible stay here, I suggest a suite and inquiring about whether arrangements could be made for an early check-in if coming on a red eye. It might also help to inquire at the front desk about the time that tour groups are expected to come to breakfast and plan accordingly.

We were pleasantly surprised by the size of the rooms: suites! There was a mini-kitchen with a refrigerator and stove, and dishwater was provided. The bathroom was a little small, but not restrictively so. WARNING: do NOT shower while wearing silver jewelry! It will tarnish due to the sulfur in the water (first-hand experience).

The double bed was actually two single beds pushed together, which made sleeping with my partner a bit awkward, as someone was always in the crack. Also, the coverlet was actually two single coverlets; again, a little awkward.

The continental breakfast was amazing, and caters to people from all parts of the world.

I would definitely recommend this hotel for its location. It is a stone's throw from the main shopping/tourist street, and a great healthy restaurant is just across the street. The staff are also amazing and will help you arrange tours and excursions.

The standard rooms are quite small and the bathrooms are already seen life but they are clean and if you are not planning to stay at the room all day long, will perfectly do what they are meant for: a good base camp for exploring Reykjavik. The sea is near, so is harbor as well as the main street.

The plusses: Elevator (small), TV (limited channels), fairly decent coffee. The minuses: Very dated, very small rooms, which are showing their age. No free internet, yet I was able to access and use mt Gmail account. Not in the best part of town, but near main shopping area. Not many places to eat nearby unless you go some blocks. Near the water, and there is a nice pedestrian walkway to take a stroll. If I get the chance to return some day, I will choose another hotel.

We stayed at the Fosshotel Baron over the New Year. Overall, we found the hotel to be fine. Looking at the map it seems a bit far from the center, but in fact we found it to be perfect... lots of restaurants within a short walk (important... there was about 1 metre of snow when we were there), and a nice short walk into town via one of the 2 streets options. Our room was very large and spotlessly clean... with lots of windows and a great view of the Hallgrimskirkja. Comfortable bed and nice bathroom. The TV only had about 3 channels of Icelandic TV, but that was also very charming. No problems with the booking process... the hotel was very helpful in giving us some advance information about our trip.

Overall, this was a great hotel for the price, and would be recommended.

There were just 2 points we felt let the hotel down.. relatively small but worth mentioning. First, the front desk staff were a little uneven. At times they were very friendly and helpful, other times didn't seem very cooperative... but it was an extremely busy period and I thought they did a great job handling all the dumb questions from tourists. However, there was one front desk attendant (a male from Croatia or Bosnia) who gave us advice which was so unbelievably dumb that we found it difficult to believe that he was not being deliberately misleading. For example, he told us that "the only" place where it was possible to view the New Year fireworks was from the Pearl (definitely not true), and that it would only take 10 or 15 minutes to walk there from the hotel... even if there had not been a metre of snow, it would have taken 2 or 3 times that long. He also insisted (and I mean insisted!!!) that the best New Year bonfire was right next to the Harpa (there was no such bonfire... everyone else we spoke to in Reykjavik laughed at this suggestion).

The breakfast: the selection was great, the food abundant... but it was utter chaos. I appreciate it was a busy period, but it was frustrating to arrive and have no-one to help to find a place (the room seemed to be packed with cheapskate lingerers stuffing in breakfast, lunch and dinner in one sitting). It seems that the entire breakfast service operated without a manager. There were long delays on all days finding a seat... again, it was busy, but it could have helped if someone had organised a seating plan or queue. One of the staff who was clearing plates was actually listening to music on headphones so she could ignore questions and requests.

So overall a good choice for a hotel.... just be sure the filter the advice you get from the front desk, and arrive early for breakfast!!
