“Fabulous Staff”
Reviewed 4 April 2014

We recently spent 4 days 3 nights at this hotel. The rooms were not ready until the afternoon so they allowed us to store our luggage and tour the city. If you check in early, take advantage of the hotels breakfast rather than walking around the city to look for a place to eat. There are not a lot of places open for breakfast and you may not want to walk to find a place. Our first room was very small but after speaking to the front desk they upgraded us for a nominal charge to an efficiency (202) with a refrigerator, table, couch and chairs. The room was clean, bright and faced the water. The staff could not have been any more accommodating. They assisted us with tour reservations, bus reservations, dinner reservations. No matter what we requested of them they complied with a smile and were always very happy to help. Josephine operated the bar at night. She was friendly, personable and tolerant of all the hotel guests. The breakfast was plentiful and the breakfast area was a nice size. The staff at breakfast did a great job of keeping the food stocked. This is definitely a place to stay for friendly service, and great location to everything
Ate at Pomodoros Italian on the main street which was great. The Argentina restaurant had an extensive menu. The Lobster House food was good, but expensive and exotic. If you are not into exotic birds or horsemeat, stay away.

Room Tip: Room with an efficiency. We stayed in 202.

We recently spent three nights at this hotel. Check in was quick and although we were early, as our room was ready, we were given the keys. Our room was clean and cosy, a small telly, coffee, tea, kettle, wardrobe, small table and a chair, all we needed for a short stay. The bathroom was fine but there were no plugs, which we found a bit odd but apparently, none of the rooms had them! There was a smell of sulphur when you turns the taps on but we soon got used to it.
All the staff were really helpful, and all spoke perfect English. Nothing was too much trouble, from booking trips to go somewhere the same day, recommending places to eat, extra coffee etc.
breakfast was good, lots on offer, cereal, a toaster, waffle maker, fruit, cheese meat and fish to choose from.
When you leave the hotel, the stunning scenery of the mountains and the sea are just across the road.
Pwople have mentioned the Viking boat structure, which is minutes away, and there are numerous shops and restaurants very near the hotel. We had soup in a loaf and a beer each in one place, which came to approx 4400 krona, approx £28 at the rate we for. Exchange wise, we for a better rate in Reykjavik than we would have done in the uk, but we had problems getting the currency, probably didn't help that I left it to the last minute anyway! We had a take away pizza from just around the corner to the right as you exit the hotel and on our last night had a really nice meal for about £60 for us both for steak and chips, starters and a shared pudding with half a carafe of wine in Vindhurin? Which was about a 5 min walk.
We initially went to see the northern lights but alas, nature was not obliging. we did the golden tour, which we loved and also visited the blue lagoon, which is a must. weather wise, we had some snow, some sun but the wind was freezing and went right through you, despite us having all warm clothing from visiting Alaska and Canada.
Overall, we had a great time, really liked the hotel and thought it was good value and a perfect place to stay for a few nights. if we come back to Icelandq, we would definitely stay here again.

Good hotel, typical of the 3* hotels I stay in when travelling. Rooms were large and we had a view of the sea, despite not paying extra for this. Our room was nice and warm which we appreciated when it was snowing outside. Great location, around a 10 minute walk to the harbour. Slightly chaotic when we arrived but we could leave our luggage there until check in at 4pm. The price we paid was excellent value and included breakfast. The breakfast room was large so we never had to wait for a table and there was a good selection of food which was replenished regularly. I would definitely stay there again.

Myself and a friend stayed here for 3 nights at the end of March. The hotel is clean and comfortable and in a great location. We had a room with a kitchenette (room 107), which was very handy. The staff are really helpful and efficient about changing tours etc. The buffet breakfast has everything you need. There is a supermarket just behind the hotel and Domino's pizza takeaway further up the street.

We organised this trip via Icelandair and pre-booked the Flybus and excursions on their website and everything worked out fine. They have a very efficient bus system there whereby you are collected from your hotel in a minibus and taken to the bus station where you transfer to your relevant tour. Means you don't have to go round picking people up at other hotels. We did excursions to the northern lights (it was a bit late in the season; didn't see first night but they let you try again free of charge and the second night we were luck); blue lagoon and golden circle - the latter in particular was a highlight.

On the first night we had a hot dog from the famous stand and it was good (and I don't normally eat hot dogs). Second night we just had takeaway pizza but then on Saturday we splashed out and went to the Fridvik restaurant for their suprise menu - highly recommend it. Also visited a quirky cafe - Cafe Babalu which was very good.

Iceland is fantastic and I will go back to see more!

Stayed here with friends 21-24 March 2014 and had a great time. We had quaint old style bed and furnishings in room with dormer windows (room 221 & 223) and shower was fab: pleasantly warm and easy to operate although it took us a while to work out the sulphur smell came from the naturally thermally heated water - and not the soap! Room was always warm and there was a wide choice for breakfast including cereals, fruit, cold meats, eggs, waffles, omelettes, and not forgetting several types of herring for the brave. The bar has a happy hour every night from 5-7pm and the draught beer is great.
It is only 2 streets away from the main shopping street and restaurants and downtown was 5-10 mins walk away. I was pleased we'd chosen to stay here in the centre rather than a larger hotel in the outskirts.

Hotel is in a good location just across from the sea walk and sculpture, so a scenic walk into town particularly if you are going to go around the harbour area. If you want shops, firstly there is a supermarket at the back of the hotel but even better, if you go up to the main street and go centre wards there's a Bonus supermarket with much better prices, with cans of diet coke for about 50p rather than the £1 at 1011 supermarket.
The reception staff were extremely helpful, there is a luggage room where you can lock your luggage away as the check in time isn't until 4pm, and likewise, for us, we were picked up at 4.30pm to transfer to the airport, were able to lock our luggage away. We booked all our tours via the reception staff and they were very helpful in this regard, particularly on rebooking our northern lights tour (we saw them at the third attempt).
Breakfast was good with cereals; granola, museli, cornflakes,
fruit - watermelon, orange slices, bananas, apples
cold salad items including fish, ham, tuna, cucumber, cheddar cheese
butter, light margarine, rolls (absolutely fresh and delicious)
omelette, cocktail hot dog sausages
make your own waffles with different flavourings and squeezy cream
different varieties of bread
orange or apple juice, tea or coffee or hot chocolate
You eat as much as you like and we found out that they like you to take your dirty plates and drop them off at a table outside the food area, just to make it easier to clear tables in the busy time.
We had a lovely room, did pay for an upgrade as I couldn't cope with looking out to the roadworks out the back where they are redoing the whole of the road above the hotel, and very thoroughly - different to the UK - and had a two roomed suite with the beds in one room with a lovely view of the sea and mountains, and the other room with a large settee, table and 4 chairs, coffee table, tv, side board. This was sorted very quickly and extremely efficiently.
We did find the tv channels seemed to move so that sometimes we couldn't pick up a channel we'd had earlier.
The shower room was fine, beware of the smell of sulphur whenever you turn the taps on for warm water, but you do get used to this and always a lovely hot shower. Only issue we had was we like to have one that you can also move.
There was a problem with filling the kettle, or our water bottles, however this was solved by using one of the plastic cups in the bathroom and filling that and then filling the kettle/bottles. If you wanted more coffee or creamer or cups, these were easily obtained from reception (we didn't need to but others did).
There is a desktop computer for use of guests which we did use and was really great as I don't pay for data on my mobile phone, so although they do give you free wifi, we couldn't use it but did use the computer several times, mainly to check the weather forecast for planning what we were going to do.
We went for 6 days booking the trip ourselves.

Room Tip: Room 413 overlooked the back, simple room with twin beds, wardrobe, table and shower room. Moved to...

Not a fancy hotel but comfy beds, small but adequate bathroom, friendly staff and lovely breakfast - what's not to like? We upgraded to a harbour view which was nice, and happy hour in the bar proved very popular at Kr 500 for a pint of Gull.
Main Street is 2 mins up the hill - eldhus kitchen (Nepalese restaurant) was very close & served great food including good veggie selection. We got 25% off on our 2nd visit which was a bonus. A good 10 minute walk to harbour area but we thought this was a well located hotel. Stayed in Laugervegur on previous visit which was really noisy at weekend.
Downside was we didn't see Northern Lughts, and the tour guide was probably the rudest, most boring woman I have met in a long time - Reykjavik Excursions bus tour beware! If we'd seen the lights we would have forgiven everything but 4 hrs with Mrs Grumpy was not much fun!
Golden Circle was fab - we drove ourselves which was a little scary over the snow covered mountains but great to have the flexibility. Blue Lagoon is brilliant and the view from Perlan worth a detour on way back to town.
Overall, a great trip!
