Reykjavik Hostel Village

Great place to base yourself. Excellent service incredibly helpful and friendly staff. Deana from the breakfast service was a warm and friendly person to help wake you up and ready for a day of adventuring. The staff made this place as special as my time spent here. Thanks to everyone!

With friendly staff, clean rooms, a good breakfast and a central location this is a good choice for the budget conscious but (as with many hostels) with one loo to four multi-occupancy rooms be prepared to queue.

We stayed 5 nights and very happy with the service.
For the 2 of us we had a single room with shared bathroom facilities.
I am not the type that is usually comfortable with this style of accommodation however they were constantly cleaned and was very secure.

Breakfast was not included but was the highlight of our stay as it was excellent and also like to thank Deena (from new york) who was most accommodating and helpful - Thank you heaps!

Beds were a bit uncomfortable however we did come from 5 star accommodation prior!

Great stay and will return next time.

We had quite a cheap deal for the two nights we stayed here, I have read some reviews that paid a lot more so maybe look around for the cheapest deal. When we arrived from the Airport, the reception area was fine and the staff were really pleasant. We were given our key and did not realize that our room was a good five minute walk up the main road, to a building that looked like a tired semi-detached house. However, the room itself was nice, with clean sheets and pillows and cosy enough. It was decorated in a modern style and was perfect for us as we had very busy days and nights in Iceland to make the most of our time there so it was only to sleep in. The bathroom we shared with a few other rooms but I never seen anyone else throughout our stay so it was quiet. We are a couple and the area felt very safe to walk back the town at night (it wasn't getting dark until about midnight anyway). It's about a 10/15 minute walk to town which was nice. Overall, for the price and cleanliness it was good, and you can't really expect more.

I stayed in a total of 3 hostels while in Reykjavik, and this was my least favorite. In terms of amenities, it was exactly the same as the others--they'll book tours for you for free, linen and breakfast are available at an extra cost, and the staff were friendly. The location wasn't great (not a huge deal, since Reykjavik is small and very walkable, but there are plenty of other hostels at comparable prices much closer to the city center), but overall it felt more like an apartment than a hostel. The atmosphere was depressing and lonely, with no real common area to meet other travelers, and many of the dorms are in separate buildings spanning two different streets, so typically you'll have to walk a block to your room after you check in. It was cheap, but besides that, I wouldn't recommend Hostel Village to others.

A room for three cost about $180 a night, but everything in Iceland is spendy. It had comfortable beds, but as in all hostels, its hard sharing a bathroom with a floor of people and this only allowed for one person at a time. So if you stay here, you might want to look at a unit with a bathroom. It's about 20 minutes from a food store or restaurant and from downtown.
It didn't have a kitchen and a breakfast of slice meat and cheese and rolls, etc cost about $15. Again see comment above about high cost in Iceland.

I must first say, the staff (Adam at front desk, NY gal who runs breakfast, evening reception girl & maintenance guy) were a few that we interacted with, were very accommodating. We had a slight issue with our sleeping arrangements bc of tour company and Adam resolved it quickly! Wonderful location to downtown and proximity to the reception/breakfast building is important too because of traffic noise and unpredictable rain (when moving luggage). The breakfast was awesome!!! However, that's where the positive feedback ends. The two rooms we stayed in were very small for a family of 4, though the rooms were clean, they lacked any air circulation so it was very stale in the room which made it warm and uncomfortable overnight. The bathrooms were gross! The water didn't drain, the one shower had disgusting mold/mildew on shower fixture and tile needed to be scrubbed. The walls are paper thin and people come and go all hours of the night. Not really conducive to good nights sleep with young children. They put us in a building on the main floor knowing that they'd have 2 and 3am check in's (the front clerk told me the following day when I mentioned the excessive noise). Those 3 nights (2 different bldgs & rooms) were the worst quality of sleep during our entire 12 day trip. I totally understand this is a budget hostel, but there's no cost to clean a bathroom or thoughtful book guests based on their needs (quiet vs single party goers)
