“Great hotel, great value”
Reviewed 21 January 2014

We had a room at the front of the hotel facing the road on the second floor. It had fabulous views of the sea and the mountains. We did not find it noisy.
The hotel was very comfortable and warm. The free wifi is a great bonus. The breakfast was buffet style but there was plenty of choice. The reception staff were a little abrupt but I think that is just their way. They were extremely helpful nevertheless.
If I could change one thing, I would move this wonderful hotel a little nearer to the main town. However, it is a lovely walk into town along the harbour that takes about 20 minutes. Or there is a very reliable bus service with a bus stop directly opposite the hotel.
We didn't see the Aurora Borealis but we had a fantastic time exploring the town. It's worth going up to the top of the tower at the cathedral as there are superb views. We enjoyed a very well organised whale watching trip (with Eldin) when we saw a pod of 8 killer whales and their pups. We also enjoyed watching hand ball one evening in a pub in town. The Icelandic people are very passionate about this sport and it creates a great atmosphere. Try the geo thermal pool at Laugardaslaug. It's 10 minutes walk from the hotel and great value for money. The hot dog stand next to the pool serves the best hot dogs ever.
We didn't think that drinks or food were any more expensive than any other city. There is something for every budget. If you get the chance to have soup served inside a bread roll (!!), I guarantee that you will love it.
We would definitely return.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front of the hotel. The views are amazing.

Just back from a great 3 night break and would definitely stay again. Friendly, very helpful staff on reception, spotlessly clean hotel throughout, minimalist, Scandinavian-feel design but surprisingly cosy feeling. A brisk walk into town takes about 20 mins and wasn't for the faint hearted with pavements covered in thick ice but you can catch a bus opposite the hotel or take a taxi. As part of our package we were entitled to a complimentary upgrade to a Superior Double room if available on arrival, which the Reception staff had arranged for us without our needing to ask. The room was still pretty small but perfectly adequate as we hardly spent any time in it, there was plenty to do and see in and around Reykjavik. My husband is tall but found the bed a good size and comfortable. Nice bathroom with good shower, plenty of hot water. Generous Continental breakfast with porridge, too, a good start to a full-on day in cold weather! Small, friendly bar open between midday and 11pm, 2 Happy Hours 5-7pm! No in-house restaurant (we were told one is planned) and therefore no room service but not a problem as there is a small health food café and a pizza place right next door plus a steak house and the Hilton Hotel a 5 minute walk away. Tea and coffee making facilities in our room would have made our happy experience of this hotel even better.

A great hotel which was very comfortable and clean. Breakfast had a good selection and was quick and easy to help yourself. The hotel staff were very helpful with organising trips etc. we had a room with a lovely view out over the mountains. Like most places in Iceland there was free wifi. Location is slightly out of town centre but we walked in one day which took about 1 hour but we did stop to take lots of pictures. Overall we would stay again.

It was certainly very clean and bright. The room was spacious and warm. The downside was that maybe we were unlucky with the staff on reception who were unhelpful to the point of rudeness. it took me aback somewhat, but afterwards found it rather funny. however, we learned to find our own way around and used the internet for the rest of the info we needed. breakfast was OK, no other meals available but the little cafe nearby was nice. I found it was a manageable walk into the town from there. There would have been a wonderful view from a balcony in the hotel, but unfortunately it was always locked. Why? not sure if I would go back, might look for something a little nearer the centre, and I certainly won't miss the receptionists.

Magnificent views northwards.
Really helpful and friendly reception staff.
Ample, varied breakfast.

Would definitely return.

Room Tip: High level room facing north for great views over sea and mountains.

I recently stayed here on a sole travel trip. After staying in the city centre previously, I wanted a hotel a little out of the centre to give me a reason to explore certain parts of the city. Its about a 20 minute walk into the centre which isn't a problem, and a great view along the sea front if you take that path. Rooms are always cleaned to a spotless standard and although they are quite small, they are extremely functional and provide everything you need, including a lovely big walk in shower. Relaxing bar area and good prices on drinks at happy hour too (17-19h).
However - My room was facing the front of the hotel and was incredibly noisy. There were construction works being done on the building directly next to my room (although it stopped at around 5pm) but the noise of the traffic and even people walking past is clearly heard all through the night. Might be worth asking for a rear facing room as the excursions are very early departures, so sleep helps!
Apart from that everything else was good - helpful staff and a large choice at breakfast - great value for the price you pay!

Room Tip: I will add that if you are going as a single traveller, book a single room - its cheaper and the bed...

We stayed here at the beginning of December 2013 and had a wonderful time. The hotel was fantastic, the rooms were clean and very comfortable. We were very lucky with the position of our room as we had uninterrupted views of the sea and mountains.
The staff at Reykjavik Lights were second to none, very helpful and friendly. The organisation of tours was fantastic no matter what time of the day it was there was always something you book and 9 times out of 10 they could arrange for you to be picked up within 20mins of booking!!
My partner rarely sleeps very well in hotels due to either the temperature of the room or the comfort of the bed so it was refreshing (for both of us!!!) to be staying in such a comfortable bed and be able to regulate the temperature of the room to our preference.

Room Tip: Fifth floor at the front of the hotel will give you great views!
