Wheelchairs are a big issue wherever you travel. Approx 60 emails later & itinerary in place for 7 day trip. Very patient, all concerns dealt with.
Met at airport & took to hotel icelandair Natura. Hotel is 20 -25 mins walk from centre, facilities are good, but, lifts are to small for wheelchair & luggage. Disabled room facilities are good except for wc access which is low & restricted by the sink. A totally useless arm rail which impedes access & serves no function at all other than to trap the user. Threshold strips to corridors from rooms are high & difficult to negotiate. Walked into Reykjavic most shops, restaurants have steps there are some with ramps (not many) we were supplied with a list of accessible restaurants but ring first a lot shut on Monday evening.
Flew to Akureyri Like catching a bus. Stopped at icelandair Akureyri. Disabled facilities are very good. Hotel only serves snacks, portions are small, so you need to go into town to eat. Hotel is 1200 yards at the top of a steep hill. You need to be fit to push the chair, ice & snow are as expected a problem , but there are accessible taxis & in bad weather i would recommend using them. Again shops & restaurants mainly have steps but there are some with ramps.
Picked up on time by Jorgen, nothing was to much trouble (bottled water supplied , nice touch). Drove as close as possible to sights , no rush. Cowshed restaurant for dinner, initial thoughts not good, but stick with it, it grows on you & the food is excellent. 8pm nature baths, they closed the ladies main changing room so we could use them uninterrupted. Northern lights & back to hotel 12.15. Exellent day & service
Next day snowmobile. Picked up on time driven right up to snowmobiles, enjoyable trip great views over Akureyri, can't fault it. Northern light free tour as not seen the night before.
Back to reykjavic, picked up for whale watching, recommend dress warmly.
Golden circle tour
Picked up on time by Christian the owners brother, good day visiting all the sights. Christian suggested looking out over airport to see northern lights, saw very faint green below orions belt.
Last day Blue lagoon. could not find entry ticket, picked up on time , driver contacted office & they emailed ticket to blue lagoon, Driver came in with us & sorted everything out. facilities at lagoon are excellent for wheelchairs. Driven back to airport.
