“The golden mean”
Reviewed 28 June 2010

Stayed there for a week (20th -26th of June 2010).

Location. Really good - close to downtown, on the Laugavegur street - one of the main shopping spots in Reykjavik.

Reception service. All personnel was pretty nice and helpful, but special thanks to HULDA! She answered thousands of my questions unshaded of even little of fatigue and exasperation. By the way she was on the night shift. So I insist she should get bonus from the hotel management!=))

Rooms. Mine (№205) was large area, completed with refrigerator, electric cooker, cooker hood, coffee machine and necessary cooking implements. So it was not just a room at the hotel it was an apartment.

Room service. Not excellent to say the truth, I think that even 3 star hotel should be well-cared-for. Floor, chairs and cooking implements were not clean enough (I spent an hour at least trying to eliminate fish smell from one of the cooking pots). No bed-linen change during the week. Shower head is covered with lime scale…

Breakfast. Meal is of good quality, but choice is rather basic (ham – 1 type, smoked sausage - 1 type, cheese – 1 type, bread, cucumbers, tomatoes, flakes, milk, tea, coffee, apples and bananas. And even no eggs =((

Ambience. I have read a lot of complains about noise there, but personally had no such problem in spite of my room was close to neighboring night club.

Nevertheless I am recommending Fron hotel for those who want adequate accomadation for the money.

Fron is located in the midway through Laugavegur, making the shops in the city easily accessible. The staff at the reception were very friendly and helped us book tours and the fly bus to the airport. They gave us the option to have each tour cost billed to our room, which was convenient since we did not have to pay the operator separately.

We were given a room with 2 separate beds - which was strange, because we thought having booked a ‘Standard Double Room’ would get us a queen. Still, the twin beds were right next to each other so we let it pass. Our room on the third floor was on a mezzanine, requiring us to walk up a small flight of steps after alighting from the lift. On the two occasions we had to carry our luggage, this was bothersome. The bathroom seemed pretty old and needed refurbishment. The shower curtain had a mouldy smell. Hot water from the taps smelt of sulphur. When we enquired at the reception they claimed that as the water was coming from a natural source the smell was inevitable. It was difficult to drink the water as the acrid taste would linger in the taste buds for a while. We did not have this problem at the other hotel we stayed at in Reykjavik.

The breakfast was basic but filling. The reception area was stocked with plenty of handy tour pamphlets. It was a boon having free wi fi in the room as we could read up on all the places we were to go to. I would recommend Fron provided you do not mind the smell of the hot water, and a tired but clean toilet. Also please carry your own toothbrush and paste as these are not provided.

A few days in Reykjavik - Hotel Fron was perfect! Eat Drink and be merry all around the hotel..... Staff was helpful and like pretty much everyone in Iceland, English was fluent ... Hotel Fron was was modern in lobby and simple/clean cut in the rooms.... breakfast was good...... Getting outNabout is a must and after being there I can say the simplest way to do that is through Reykjavik Excursions/FlyBus ... they are big and efficient.... In Iceland when they say 8:30 pick up they don't mean 8:3 ...... We LOVED Iceland and can't wait to back... Hotel Fron was a solid choice and we would stay there again no problem...

TIP:
Go to the BLUE LAGOON! .... It was AMAZING .... yes it is very touristy but so what - it's awesome! No it is technically a "man-made" lagoon but the setting is wonderful! ... We got off the plane in the early am and when right there from airport (Prebook FlyBus or buy ticket at airport) ... We arrived at 9am when it opened and had the place to oursleves for an hour or two before the crowds really started to come... Nothing like having a glass of champagne in the lagooon in morning! ... We were worried about our bags (just off plane) but RE/FB has a storage hut right outside entrance where u leave your bags... The Blue Lagoon was an absoluelty wonderful way to start our Icelandic adventure!

Good hotel in a very nice city and country.
In the weekend there could be some noice at night... bring earplugs to avoid any irritation.
The breakfast was a bit monotone, apart from that Hotel Fron is a very good place to stay.

I would absolutely recommend this hotel, as long as you were aware of the club noise prior.
We landed in Iceland at about 6am, so it was probably 8am before we got to the hotel. Not a problem, the room was available for us early (kudos!). The room was simple and modern- Ikea, of course. I was pleased to have a mini fridge. The staff was accommodating as needed- they were great to book tours with and kept us informed of the volcano and the airport labor strike (that's a whole other story) during our stay. Everyone spoke fluent English which was a relief.
The location couldn't be beat except for one thing- the nightclub next door. It was fine until Friday night at about 11. I was exhausted getting over a 7hr jetlag, and that didn't help. The club scene starts at about 11pm and goes towards 6am. Saturday night I nearly lost my sanity. Sunday, however, the club was quiet and I had a GREAT night sleep. Had I know ahead, I would have brought earplugs and then no problem. Otherwise I would absolutely stay here again!

they are so kindness and use easy understanding English.
It's one point for Japanese, you have to bring slippers when you go to Iceland.

This a great hotel in the centre of Reykjavik. It's reasonably priced and breakfast is included. The staff were helpful and straight to the point (which I like!), and arranged everything as well as being up to date on the volcanic eruption!
The hotel is clean, alhtough a little dusty in areas. The rooms are very spacious and look nice too. The beds are soft and you do have to ask for another pillow if you like two. This wasnt a problem.
The bathroom was clean.
We stayed in a room at the back of the hotel as recommened. However, a delivery of some sort arrives between 6am and 7am where trollies are wheeled down a paved car park making alot of noise which woke me every morning. We also had the standard people who like to move their furniture around alot upstairs which woke us up to. So no chance of a lie in unfortunately.
Reykjavik on a weekend comes to life around midnight, where everyone is walking side ways, singing and shouting because they are drunk. No age is exempt either, which is quite entertaining to watch. Drinks are around £4 for a pint and £4 - £5 for a glass of wine (although the choice isn't always very good), a vodka and coke is about £5.
Food is expensive, especially for the quality. We went to the Honrid on recommendation and the food was poor. The pizza basis were partially cooked in advance before the topping was put on. So they may sit there all evening before being reheated. The rissotto is a definite no no, with tinned vegetable and mushy rice.
The Italian pomodorro (I think it was called, turn right out of the Hotel and it's on the same side of the street) did lovely pizzas for around £15! (That's reasonable!) Cafe Paris was nice for a snack too.
Id advise anyone to book a trip to the Blue Lagoon. It's well worth it and you can spend all day there. Great after a Saturday night out in Reykjavik!
Get a car and explore. Iceland has alot more to offer than just Reykjavik. It's incredibly quite, peaceful and beautiful. There is very little traffic and at time it feels like you are the only people there.
