“Wonderful hotel - great location”
Reviewed 16 December 2013

We were in Iceland on a package through Iceland Air, and it seemed so were most of the people staying there. The staff was very friendly and extremely helpful. The rooms were minimalistic, but very clean and comfortable.

Pros - breakfast is included and was pretty hearty (the oatmeal and dried fruit bars were a big hit with us), for a fee you can check in early if your room is available which was a life saver after the red eye flight, plenty of english speaking channels on the TV, situated in the center of the shopping district and close to the water for boat tours, super friendly staff

Cons - they were doing construction during the day - not a big deal unless you were near it and wanted to nap in the afternoon, shower was essentially a glass half door that separated the shower head from the toilet so the spray of the shower went all over and the floor was a quite slippery after a shower.

Would definitely stay there again.

We went to Reykjavik a week ago for a 4 night stay. On arrival to the hotel there where a lot of guests in the hotel lobby which looked promising. We checked in quickly and took the lift to our superior room on the 6th floor. It was a lovely room with a huge bed and flat screen tv with lots of English channels. We had the most amazing view of the town with an indoor balcony effect. The room was clean and tidy with towels changed every day. The water in the ensuing was smelly but that is the case all over the city because of the way they filter their water. Breakfast was included in the price of the stay and it was delicious, a good selection of food and if you went down at 7am or 10am you would get the same selection and quality as they constantly topped up. The city it's self however is very expensive, especially to eat, we walked for nearly an hour one night trying to find a reasonably priced restaurant. Don't expect a meal under £20 per person, with the average price around £35. We did however find a hidden gem just around the corner from our hotel, it's at the back of the tourist information centre and it was reasonably priced and the good was 1st class absolutely delisious I would go back to Iceland just for their onion soup!!! The city is very charming but really it's a holiday where you have to do a lot of tours and day trips to occupy your time. We went to the blue lagoon which was amazing you have to experience it to believe a place like this could even exist. Quading in the snowy mountains which was a good day out, and the best was a northern lights trip where we actually got to see them. You can book any tour through reception in the hotel they where so helpful. Overall a good stay, lovely country and excellent hotel but very expensive out there so take a lot of cash!

We took a low-cost bargain break for our first visit to Iceland staying in Reykjavik. Centerhotel Plaza was located right in the town centre, across the street from a picturesque square. Local buildings, mostly two or three storey were historic wooden structures in brightly painted colours. And NO traffic, except taxis, tourist buses and the occasional delivery vehicle. The harbour was close by - perhaps less than 200 metres. Plenty of restaurants at all prices, though the cheap ones were usually of the fast food variety. Wallibarbe readers will know that Mrs W is not easy to please…. Our room was very small and the shower didn't appear to work, which, when reported was rectified right away. We decided the size of the room was commensurate with the cost of the holiday - there was no lack of comfort - so, on a budget, we didn't take the upgrade offered (for a small extra charge). However, somehow we managed to try to tax the patience and commitment of all staff, from reception, to restaurant (great breakfasts!), to cleaning staff…. All to no avail! No matter how serious or trivial our enquiries, all CenterHotel staff responded willingly, energetically and cordially, without exception. Our enjoyment seemed to be their sole concern. We've seldom found this standard of care and concern in large hotel groups.

The hotel seemed to have a hotline to the excellent tourbus company that arranged our daily excursions (witness changing bookings for the third time, finding a lost glove.) These are a must, especially the Blue Lagoon and the Golden Circle. You may have one chance in a lifetime to sample these. TAKE IT! ! ! Likewise the Northern Lights, but you may be unlucky since performances of nature can't be booked in advance! We particularly enjoyed swimming in hot water in the snow, standing between two north Atlantic tectonic plates, the joy and enthusiasm of the Icelanders, not being "sold" to at every opportunity. Shopping was a real pleasure - not once were we hassled or harassed by eager sales people.

The CenterHotel Plaza was a lovely hotel to stop at .The position of it made it ideal to explore the heart of Reykjavik. The room was clean , tidy and very warm (which is perfect after a day of exploring Iceland). Just outside the hotel was a quaint little plaza lit up by Christmas lights . Every weekend there is a small market that opens there selling traditional Icelandic goods. The hotel was only a 5 minute walk from most restaurants , the main shopping location , the lake and the excursion centre (Grayline). The lobby was a very modern yet comfortable place to relax on an evening with a drink. Reykjavik is a beautiful city and I would highly recommend the northern lights tour (your ticket is valid for you to use every night that you are there for and 2 year just in case you don't see them) but wrap up warm ! and the Blue Lagoon which was a weird but wonderful experience.

Room Tip: Ask for front or rear facing rooms as side facing rooms look onto another building.

Stayed there for 4 nights at the start of December. The reception staff are helpful and speak good English. We had room 209 which was located on the first floor. It wasn't the biggest of rooms. The main bathroom light wasn't working, nor one of the bed lights. We told reception on arrival day, but them still hadn't fixed it by the time we left on the 5th day. The room was cleaned every day. Get use to the ice cold water and smelly hot water. The room was plenty warm enough, and you could open the windows should you need some air.
It isn't the quietest of hotels. Due to having wooden flooring in the rooms, you could hear ever step anyone was making in the room above, and you could also hear people talking as they passed your room door.
It appears that the hotel is next to a pub or club as one night the music was very loud and went on into the early hours.
Location-wise, it is well placed with a short stroll into town. Plenty of restaurants in the area to suit all tastes. There is a 24hr supermarket just down the road also in the road opposite. The Iceland Excursions office is also a 5-10 minute walk away.
I've given this hotel a rating of 4 due to it's location, but it would be a 3 otherwise.

Stayed for 3 nights. Our room was in the original hotel not the extended part. It was reasonably sized. Bathroom was small and shower wasn't worth it as it was too small but the water was hot, yes there is a sulphur smell to the hot water but isn't that bad and is a natural effect of the way it is extracted. I'd stay here again as it's centrally located. Breakfast was plentiful and what I'd expect from a continental hotel with hot and cold food.

Iceland is expensive -- this centrally located hotel offers a great value at about $100 USD per night. The rooms are small and simple but clean. The bathroom set up is unusual with a shower area that is not enclosed (ask for extra towels to mop up the mess). The included breakfast spread is actually quite good (much better than the Holiday Inn set-ups you typically see in the states)! The staff is friendly and helpful. If you arrive very early in the morning, it's 30 Euros to check in early but includes the breakfast. The best part is the location--you can walk to most of the popular attractions in the city from here and you are steps away from bars and restaurants.
