“Not what it says on the Booking website”
Reviewed 28 August 2013

I have waited a couple of days to review this Penthouse Apartment as I wanted to process what I actually thought of it, as opposed to my gut reaction. I booked it for myself and my family through booking.com and paid over £1200 for 4 nights in late August. I booked it because the website said it had a balcony and a BBQ as well as other features which seemed attractive. We sarrived late on and were shown to the apartment which has no balcony and I was informed that none of the Apartment K apartments have a balcony or a BBQ. First of a few problems. The apartment is on the top floor and has some views of the harbour through the small windows. The 2 bedrooms have only a large "bed" in them as you cannot stand up in them apart from at the door as they are in the eaves. The beds are large but are actually just mattresses on breeze block. Comfortable nevertheless. You have to live out your suitcase in one of the rooms as there is no furniture apart from the bed. The kitchen was ok as part of the living rooms but major issue with sockets as you could only have either the kettle or the toaster on at once as the second socket is up high above a shelf. There were only 3 cups in an apartment for 6.
There was a major problem in the bathroom so anyone with any mobility issues beware. The booking.com website lists Japanese wooden tub, shower, bathroom , toilet which led us to believe that the tub- 4 foot high with a 3 step wooden ladder to access it - was an extra and there would be a separate shower. Not to be. One of our party could not get into the tub as they were afraid they would fall from the ladder so had to wash in the basin for 4 days. Luxury?? NOT! there is also only one toilet which for 4 people was an issue at times. There was no blind on the front door as the fitting was broken so people could see in. One of the door handles was hanging off and there was a very unsafe dip in the entrance area which was dangerous . Also, if you stepped back to look in the fridge, you had a step at your back which was also dangerous.
We phoned booking, com to complain and they emailed the company who said there was nothing they could do and would not contemplate compensation as they said the misleading description was the booking.com staff's fault. Booking.com have not yet responded to my written complaint although they did act quickly , if ineffectively ,when I phoned them from the apartment. The apartment is well located and if it was half the price and had a separate shower, I would be recommending it . As it is , I feel we were totally mislead and we were ripped off. I cannot in all conscience recommend it to anyone. One member of staff resigned while we were there as it seems he was fed up with the number of complaints he was left to deal with. Significant. One of the bedrooms had an unacceptable level of noise from local clubs which are open well into the wee small hours. Take your earplugs, if you go.

The location is excellent - right along the main stretch and easy walking distance to bars, restaurants, shops, and museums. Kitchen was well equipped and making our own food saved us a ton of money - there is a cheap grocery store (Bonus) right around the corner. Comfy couch, flat screen TV, CD player, funky design.
Negatives - not quite as clean as it could have been, and bed is only a mattress on the floor. This was fine for us, but could be an issue for some.
Also note that 'Home Luxury Apartments' is actually the same as 'Apartment K' and that's what the sign outside says. Also the signage outside is small and easy to miss.
Overall highly recommended. Perfect for our stay!

When you actually have found the place and is inside your room, it's nice. The trouble is getting there. There is no sign on the door saying "Home luxury apartments", only "Apartment K". They come and meet you. There is no reception in the house. You have to call them upon arrival.

When we first got there at 1:00 PM we were asked to come back at 3:00 PM, because the room wasn't ready. When we came back at 3:00 PM and called again they asked us to wait another 15 mins. And after the guy that showed us our room came, we had to wait for another hour, because the room wasn't cleaned.

The room is nice though and the location is great.

Excellent central location near shops, restaurants, bars, tourist info, museums and concert hall but just off main street away from noise near bars. There was no noise from other apartments (at least in the week we were there.) No view from most apartments as units completely fill the available land. No signage for the building (study the photo) or office (It is on the top floor, half way down the corridor) which is a little confusing at first. Staff excellent and all speak English (as does the whole population). There is space for 4 cars on a first come first served basis (no charge). We managed to park there at least some of the time each day and if full on return at the end of the day there are parking meters nearby for which there is no overnight charge and day time charges only start at 10am and only about £1 per hour. Dishwasher provided, crockery and cutlery all clean. Microwave with grill, no oven not problem but don't buy pizza. 24 hour supermarket a few minutes walk away. Housekeeping attentive. TV all UK channels and radio but we did not find any local channels. Free WiFi was excellent. Could do with a bit more hanging space for clothes but lived out of suitcase OK. Would recommend and stay again. We were in ground floor 1 bed apartment.

Room Tip: If you want a view top floor facing port would be recommended.

In November 2012 we booked the "luxury" penthouse for 4 days for the following June. When we arrived,we were given another far inferior room - dirty, broken and worn furniture, none of the advertised luxury features - no balcony, no barbeque, no art work, no sound system. When we complained, we were told that the room we had booked was not available and after much complaining on our part, were given 25 per cent off what we had paid. However, that was 25 percent off the price of the luxury penthouse and still a gross overcharge for the dismal room we were in.

Beware when you book here . It appears that there are a couple of nice rooms, used for photos on the booking sites and a huge number of crummy rooms in several buildings where they actually put you when you get here.

We have just returned from spending 4 nights in these apartments. Fantastic location and has most things that you would need. Free wi-fi was also a bonus. The bed was very comfortable, even though this just looks like a mattress on the floor. Was slightly disappointed that our room didn't have the luxury feel as per most on the pictures on line, as these are mostly of the penthouse. You also need to be careful that you get the apartment that you booked, as apartment in have several apartments, not all at this location. We could only check in around 3 pm, but there was somewhere to leave your suitcase, so you didn't have to wheel your case around all day if you are on an early flight. The apartment staff were also excellent in helping us make alternate arrangements for a northern lights tour, when our pre-booked tour operator didn't show up to collect us. We finally got to see the northern lights on our 2nd long cold night, but they were weak as activity was forecast low. Great all the same and can't wait to see a full light display in the future. The Golden Circle tour was also really good and the Blue Lagoon. Also tried whale watching but had no luck. There is an lovely coastal footpath around the peninsula to the lighthouse, which is a nice walk. Wasn't impressed with the museum at Perlan, expensive and not much to it.

Great location. Don't try to check in before 3.00pm as there is no one about. Room could be a bit cleaner but that is probably because the cleaner is rushing. Also they don't provide any cleaning equipment ie dust pan & brush, which for a self catering set up is odd. The Internet access in our room was very poor, and had to go to reception to get decent signal. All in all we would stay here again.

Room Tip: If you get a choice go for top floor, at the end of a row if poss.
