If you are interested in Iceland's history, this museum is well worth a couple of hours of your time. The outside is rather forbidding-looking, but the inside is well organized, English-friendly and contains many interesting artifacts.

The museum is centrally located and is a great lesson in the history of Iceland. I learnt a lot about the Vikings as well as the Danish influence over the centuries. The museum is well-designed and easy to navigate, worth a trip with my family.

In two floors, the museum moves from the early settlement period in 870 to the present, showcasing the best of Iceland's history and culture. Key artifacts, like the robe of the final Catholic bishop who was beheaded for refusing to convert, anchor each period. Take the English language guided tour - a wealth of insight - and then go back to look at exhibits in depth. We spent two hours with great satisfaction. An elevator provides full mobility. After this visit, all we saw fit into a coherent whole. A great way to start one's visit.

A wonderful national museum presenting a good overview of Icelandic history and all presented in exemplary Icelandic fashion. A 'must see' if interested in Viking history. Great coffee bar too!!

If you'd like to understand the country a bit better the museum is worth a visit. A couple hours allows you an indepth look at the exhibits. It is well laid out with lots of interactive media. Very English friendly.
