“Mountain views!”
Reviewed 28 November 2013

We booked a trip to Iceland through Secret Escapes to stay in Thingholt, a quirky sister hotel in the centre of the city. We were gutted on arrival when we were told we were being moved due to overbooking. (I've worked in a hotel, Secret Escapes bookings are lethal!)
We were offered some great compensation including a mountain view room and spa access as well as a drink and a meal in a restaurant down town.
Our room (with underfloor heating) was also upgraded to deluxe, but it seemed to be only slightly bigger than a standard room, I'm not sure if I'd pay for an upgrade.

Breakfast was nice, more selection than most and actually a really nice change from the big fat English Breakfasts I've had in a lot of hotels! Most of the time we had breakfast in the dark as the sun doesn't rise til 10 but on the last day we had a leisurely morning and late breakfast while watching the sun rise from the top of the hotel. It was magical.
Restaurant staff are a bit grumpy, and the snacky food in the restaurant is expensive but everywhere in Reykjavik is similar price.
The reception staff are helpful and professional. They will book all trips and things for you.

The spa is lovely after a cold day out. Small, but nice especially with a cold beer ordered from reception without even having to get out the water!

Iceland is incredible. One of the best places I've been. If you have the chance, GO without hesitation. If you have a holiday booked, you will not be disappointed. I recommend cramming in activities. No Northern Lights, but maybe next time!

Thank you Iceland and Centerhotels!

Room Tip: Try for a top floor room with the view of the mountains if poss!

This place was GREAT on a budget. Only thing it lacked was storage space - no drawers for clothes (just a few open shelves) and no real closet or wardrobe. Spa has large geothermal hot tub, sauna and steam room - and a rack of free weights. They give you robes when you go down there the first time. Breakfast was delish! Home-baked bread (steaming loaves you cut yourself), a yummy home-baked danish-type thing, cucumber, tomato, caviar ( in the tube), cereal, skyr (in a pitcher by the cereal), scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, porridge, juice, coffee, tea. Slow toaster. Breakfast is crowded early, as people need to leave on tours. Front desk great about working with tour companies and other reservations.

Room Tip: If you get to the hotel in the morning, they will let you eat breakfast. Substantial charge for earl...

This hotel is well-located within easy walking distance of most things you'll want to do in Reykjavik. Overall, it was a reasonably comfortable place to stay, but it is starting to look a bit tired, and more attention to detail regarding cleaning and maintenance would be in order. Breakfast was good, with lots of selection and great views. I'd say stay in this hotel if you get a good price and if you're just looking for a comfortable place to sleep, but if you are particular about the standard of hotel you stay at, this may not be the place for you.

Room Tip: I would recommend upgrading to a deluxe room; we did this after seeing the first room we were offere...

Great location - just next to the concert hall Harpa, the central streets (like Laugarvegur) are just a couple of blocks away, rooms are quite large and nicely decorated, good wifi connection. Loved the restaurant on the top floor because of its views where they also served breakfast. It's also a good place also to have a cocktail and a really good sandwich in the evening, and enjoy the lights of Harpa, but because of the prices, that's an exclusive treat.

We were put into room 108 on arrival. This room is on the ground floor, round the corner from reception. It looks out on to the main road which is extremely busy and noisy. When the front door shuts it makes the wall rattle in room 108, also you hear every word spoken in reception. We had booked this as a 50th Birthday short break, so we asked to be moved as there is no way you would sleep in this room. At first they said they couldn't move us as it was full but they did move us to room 501, which was a lovely room.
The hotel is well positioned but it is noisy, but much quieter than some. It has a great view, from the front. It's close to all the shops and the bus terminal for trips. The spa is small but well worth a visit when you've been out all day in the cold.
The Sky bar does a small range of hot snacks. The potato wedges are good and so are the BLT and nachos, as all food in Iceland it's expensive, you won't pay under £20 for a snack and a drink for two people. Stay away from the chicken on a stick as its just half a chicken breast cut into cubes with cocktail sticks stuck into it, with a little mayo, for this they charged nearly £8, so buyer beware!
Breakfast is served in the Sky bar from 7-10 each morning. They a good range of hot and cold choices on a buffet service. Good choice of breads and fresh fruit.
Worth a stay but stay away from the ground floor rooms

Room Tip: Don't go for ground floor rooms

I noticed that many of the city center hotel reviews warned of noise. The Arnarhvoll is basically city center but a little closer to the harbour. It takes only a few minutes stroll to get to the main shopping district and bar district but the hotel location is very quiet. The breakfast is quite good, with eggs, bacon, sausage as well as toast, yogurt, fruit, etc. The room is modern, new and clean. Not particularly big but just fine. A minor negative is that the bed made my back sore (but it's been hurting lately so this may not be a problem for other people). The major negative was that, like many other people arriving from North America, I arrived early and they charged me quite a lot of $ for early check-in.

My mum and I stayed here for 4 days last week for my 30th birthday and had a great time in Iceland. The hotel was reasonably priced and I feel was really good value for money it was clean and nicely decorated and in a great location for getting around Reykjavik to see the main sights. The bar on the top floor was lovely, the drinks were pricey but I think thats the standard in reykjavik and breakfast was a good choice of food and was included in price. The only negative I would say is that as nice as the room are they are very small for 2 people sharing and the walls were quite thin meaning you could hear a bit from people in next door room, I think I would probably upgrade and go for one of the slightly bigger rooms. Overall a great hotel in great location I would definetely come back here.
