“Perfect base for a perfect holiday”
Reviewed 23 March 2009

Took the boyfriend over to Reykjavik for his 30th. Had booked a hotel before discovering Apartment K...so glad I changed and so was he. The apartment is perfectly located. Most of the hotels I looked at are a good bit from the city centre - I discovered this when we were dropping people off on the way back from tours.
The attention to detail in the decoration of the apartment is unbelieveable - they really have thought of everything. Though we didn't cook in the apartment at all it was very well equipped.
The owners are extremely friendly and have some great advice on where to go and where to eat. They sorted us out with taxis - for the Irish out there when you book a taxi for a certain time they arrive a few mins early to leave at that time!
The only thing I could fault was the smell of sulphur from the water - noone warned us of this. They use Geo-thermal energy in Reykjavik and this includes their water so it can be a bit stinky.
Though the price may seem more expensive than some hotels it's totally worth it and you'll save on getting taxis into the city centre.

went for about a week in march and got an enourmous room for good money.
staff were kind and helpful about all facilities and even helped out with cabs to and from the airport.
one of the trendiest rooms ive ever stayed in, if thats what your looking for, and included all facilities you would need for self catering and just relaxing.
the location was on the main reykjavik high road and to go out to the shops, to clubs, or to restaurants was only a walk down one road. depending on where you are going it is roughly 5-10 mins from the main busy area.
i have absolutely no dilikes with the room or its location and if you want to and can afford to go reykjavik you cant go wrong with this place.

We stayed in K2 on Laugavegur. we booked thru booking.com and got an excellent rate - but care needed as they only list one address.....Apartment K is in fact a variety of apartments, located in different places. Kathy and Jokull - who own and run them - are perfect hosts - very helpful. K2 is very high spec - full of very expensive designer furniture and fittings. Apparently all the apartments are similarly high standard. Its worth using their taxi recommendation (Dori) for the long (45 min) transfer from the airport; Dori knows exactly where the apartments are and phones ahead to make sure Kathy or Jokull are waiting for you.

In spite of being on the main shopping street (which has excellent designer clothes shops, by the way), K2 is very quiet.

We used Icelandic Excursions to visit the sites - they were very good, and picked us up from the Apartment on time. Would particularly recommend using them to go back to the airport, with a 2-3 stop at the wonderful Blue Lagoon en route. Perfect end to a great trip.

Loved the apartment - highly recommended.

Just got back from a week in Reykjavik with my 2 daughters (age 23 and 26) plus a friend of theirs (age 25) We were allocated Apartment L1 but on arrival we were given (upgraded) to L5 on Laugavegur. I rang the people up the day before we left and Kathy arranged a taxi to pick us up at the airport as we were arriving at midnight. The guy was there waiting for us, it cost roughly £14 each (9500 krona) which is pretty expensive really, but it did get you to the apartment without the hassle of the buses, which would have been much cheaper. The apartment was amazing, very spacious and very modern. It was a one-bedroom apartment so myself and one of my daughters slept on the sofa bed (very comfortable). The entertainment system in the TV was amazing, computer, ipod docks, and fully loaded with about 40 films, music etc, the girls loved it.
The apartment was very centrally located, only about 10-15 min walk down the main street to the centre, with very cool shops and cafes on the way down. We had taken lots of food with us (you are allowed 3kg each, including fruit and veg, no uncooked meats though) so I took tins of salmon, ham, soups, cereals, pasta, even some salad which I had at home, etc. This saved us loads of money as food is very expensive there! Chicken breasts for 4 were £12!!!! Booze is also very expensive. You have to buy it from the liquor stores, cans of beer are around £1.60 a can! Spirits are around £24 or even more for a bottle, wine is £12 or more too. Luckily we all bought a bottle of spirit at the airport (Heathrow) before leaving, and just bought lemonade and coke to mix from the Bonus (Pink Pig) store, just down the road. This is the cheapest supermarket so shop here for essentials.
We had lots of snow (this is what we were expecting of Iceland) so it was wonderful! We took the local bus to Hafnarfjordur (a one-off fare of 2.80 kronas on all buses) to look for the elves and little people!! This place is suppose to have the biggest population of elves!!! It was a lovely town, after going around the park looking for the elves (which we didnt find any, but the local tourist office do run tours for this purpose, but not on the day we were there) Then we found the local swimming baths for a spell in the hot pots!!! Fabulous, only 300 krona (around £1.80), the temperature being 42 degrees in one and 37 degrees in the other, both outside in the snow - so nice and relaxing.
We did all the touristy stuff. We decided to do the northern lights on a night which we thought was clear, a new moon etc, so we went with Reykjavik Escursions, cost 4,700 then 10% off with voucher from tourist board, so 4,200 odd (around £27) expensive for what it was. Pick up 8.30 drive out of Reykjavik to ski resort then the national park. We parked up and all got off the bus and stood around waiting, and waiting, and waiting, in temperatures of at least -10 or more, and nothing happened. Apparently people were complaining at the Tourist shop about it saying all they do is bus people up there regardless of whether it is a good night to see the northern lights. The lady in the tourist office did say you can go with another company for more money (about £86 each) who guarantee that if you dont see the lights you get your money back, but they take you again and again, so depending on how much time you have, its an expensive trip and a disappointment if you dont see the lights. We did the Golden Circle with Iceland Horizon, we phoned them up and booked. Picked up at apartment in a 4x4 minibus (there wee 10 of us in it) Great guy (gummi or gunni, cant remember his name) very knowlegeable and informative about Iceland) . We were out for about 8 hours, around the Tingvellir Park, Gullfoss Falls, the Geysers etc, he took us off the beaten track to show us lots of other places, we even went to the Geothermal Power plant and had a tour, very interesting. We would never have seen so much with the Bus tour companies, so well worth going with these guys - cost 7,900 each (around £53 each). We did the Blue Lagoon on the way back to airport with NetBus, we went to the tourist office and got them to book it for us, they only charge 4,000 krona (£24) which includes entrance to the Lagoon (which is around £20 anyway) then transfer to airport , so it was a lot cheaper than the Reykjavik Excursion bus which is 5,900 (£32). The ladies in the Tourist Office are great and will book tours for you and give out lots of advice, so go there first thing.
The girls went out on the Saturday night (all the locals party on Fri and Sat) at 12.00 midnight after having a few drinks first at home (to save money) They really enjoyed themselves apart from a couple of guys who were really anti-British. In fact they came back and said the Icelandic people hate the British!!! One guy kept telling them 'we dont want your tourism or money' 'Gordon Brown says we are terrorists etc'. They did meet some lovely people too, though. Beer was on average 800 krona a pint around £5 or just over.
Overall we had a great week, you definitely need a week to see stuff and enjoy yourself. I would love to go back in spring or summer when the scenery would be quite different from the snowy scene we had, which was so picturesque. If the weather had been different then it would have been worth while to hire a car and do all the touristy stuff and save lots of money, but I didnt have the confidence to drive on the icy roads there. Well worth the visit and would definitely stay at these apartments.

I stayed in Apartment K with a few other friends and we absolutely loved it. We stayed in the apt on Laugevegur, which was such a central location, right on the main shopping street. Kathy and her husband who rented it to us were fantastic - they picked us up from the bus terminal and gave us a great orientation on the apt and also gave us some great tips on good places to eat, shop, etc. The apt itself was spotlessly clean and a dream to stay in.. all of us were so sad that it wasn't our actual apt in our home country! The furnishings were really modern and cool, and the technology (computer, TV, wireless internet, movies, iPod speakers, phone you can use during your stay, etc.) were incredibly useful. Highly recommend this place to anyone who goes to Reykjavik!

We just returned from a 5-night stay in Reykjavik, and Apartment K made the trip even more fantastic. My husband, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law shared a 2-bedroom apartment (K3) and it was perfect. So much better than cramped hotel rooms. We really felt like we lived in Reykjavik for a week. I’d trade that for any hotel amenities any day (expensive room service is all that comes to mind).

It was in a great location, beautifully furnished and BIG. Also a really good value and extremely helpful owners, great amenities (computer with movies loaded to watch on TV, cell phone for use while staying there, great kitchen with new appliances, COMFORTABLE BED). Pretty much everything else they have in their listing (booking.com) was true and the pictures show just what the apartment looks like. The description of K2 seems really similar to K3, so that should give you a good idea, except instead of a conference/dining table for 10 people we had a very nice round dining room table, which probably wouldn’t fit more than 6.

One thing that might be a little confusing - the address on the website is their office, not the actual apartment address. They have 3 locations throughout the city, so you have to contact them to figure out exactly where you'll be staying. But all of them are very centrally located so any should be great. Ours was at Laugavegur 86-94, and close to everything.

Overall, one of the best hotel experiences I’ve ever had!
