Very charming place with friendly and helpful owners. We had a room located in a building adjacent from the main house and the place was very calm and comfortable. For those who have a rental car, there are some free parking spots available close to the guesthouse.

Room Tip: Rooms located in the separate building are very quiet.

Þórey Bjarnadóttir was the perfect host and the Guesthouse Galtafell was the perfect location. While we were there, Þórey shared the wonderful family history of the house, more of which is on their website. The castle-like home is located on the same street as the American Embassy; several other diplomatic headquarters are in that neighborhood. Very quiet!

Strolling around the area is pleasant, with the impressive Hallgrimskirkja Church looming over the city. It’s definitely worth a visit inside it to see and hear the gigantic pipe organ.

Guesthouse Galtafell is just a couple blocks from Reykjavik's Tjörnin Pond, providing opportunities for birding and viewing public art. Great restaurants, the Harpa Center, Old Harbor and museums are an easy walk too.

Þórey provided a diverse breakfast each day and I was addicted to the very tasty pastries her husband picks up each morning, but also loved the fresh cucumber slices. The buffet is served in the dining room of this historic home, which almost feels like a museum.

On our first morning there, Þórey went "above and beyond the call of duty" - she saved us from walking in a rainstorm by driving us to the Harpa Center for our early-morning tour departure. And, of course, I cannot forget to mention her sweet kitty Jelly Belly. I'd return to the Guesthouse Galtafell in a heartbeat!

Room Tip: We booked a room with a bathroom shared with two other rooms and there were never any issues; never...

This gem of a guesthouse is a little further away than some others and is close to hallgrimskirkja church. The owners are absolutely wonderful and the "room" we stayed in was actually a small apartment, with a nice sized living area, small kitchenette and nice bedroom. They provided a yummy breakfast every morning in their dining room where we met other guests who hailed from all over the world. Definitely worth the money.

Room Tip: We had Room #1 which was a converted garage. A little dated, but definitely private and lots of lig...

The location is perfect and the hosts were very nice, but this wasn't what we were expecting from the photos in the brochure and online. I know phots can be misleading, but my guess is that they were from a while ago. We stayed in one of the apartments. The couch was really stained and seemed pretty dirty (I wouldn't use it). The headboard in the bedroom was too. The bedroom was really only big enough for the bed. You couldn't have your suitcases open since there was only enough room to get around the bed. The kitchen area was convenient, but there was only one coffe cup and only one drinking glass. Fortunately, we didn't want coffeee or tea, but it would have been nice to have two of each. Great location and walking distance to town. Only street parking which was a bit of a challenge at times and we had to park a few blocks away. Good price for the location, but a bit dingy. Don't know if I would stay again.

We stayed here over the New Years period between 2013/2014.

The location is excellent as it is less than a 10 minute walk to the central shopping street. The room itself was large as it was a self contained flat. We were warned that the hot water in Iceland always smells of Sulphur which was a surprise when I took my shower.

The tree in the front garden is spectacular in the winter as it lights up the whole street. Our bus driver said that she loved to drive past and see it in all of its glory.

Breakfast was decent enough, and we also got to meet their Icelandic Sheepdog which is remarkably like a Welsh Corgi.

We stayed in Guesthouse Galtafell in July 2013. The guesthouse is located just at the outside of the Reykjavik city center, quite close to the domestic airport. We had a flight from Akureyri, and walked with our luggage from airport to the guesthouse.
Reykjavik is quite small town, so it is easy to walk everywhere. There were some restaurants ca. 15 minutes walk away from guesthouse.
We had room with shared bathroom, kitchen facilities. Everything was ok, not that clean or new facilities, quite basic.
The breakfast was served up steers in the owners kitchen. Breakfast nice including everything you need for breakfast. The owner was really nice and helpful with all our problems.
Why I only give 3 stars, is quality/location/price ratio. This guesthouse is not located in the city center, you need to walk quite long to reach restaurants/ shops/ etc, rooms are quite old and dated, and we payed over 120 eur/ night.
Overall I can recommend this guesthouse, especially if you can find better deals!
