Hreidrid Guesthouse
Reviewed 12 July 2013

Much of the new Icelandic accommodation is in simple modern Ikea style so it was good to come across an old fashioned place with its own character. Owner Ruth is very helpful and access to decent cooking facilities is a real bonus if you're trying to save a few Krona on restaurant meals. Not only do I recommend this guesthouse but I also strongly recommend that you stay at least one night on this interesting island.

We spent a good night in this guesthouse. The hostess Ruth is very friendly and helpfull. We enjoyed how she designed the place. We had a small separate bedroom and we shared the bathroom with others. Besides that there is a well equiped kitchen, and there is wireless internet. She has a lovely dog and she also has a cute puffin as pet. The guesthouse is well located. We will definitely come back here again, during our next visit.

If u need basic rooms with good kitchen facilities for self-catering, this is the place to stay. Toilets and showers are shared by fellow guests. Those with interest in all things puffin and nature will find much good advice and information from the hostess Ruth who is very helpful, and passionate about wildlife. The guesthouse dog is a darling too!

We initially tried to get a room at the HI hostel, but the whole place was a building site (with builders looking through the windows)! This place was much cheaper, very glad we ended here instead.

The rooms were spacious and clean, with a nice little shared kitchen. There is a puffin / sea-bird theme to the place which makes sense when you meet the friendly owner, Ruth, who keeps a pet puffin outside!

We were made very welcome there, and would definitely go back if we return to the island!

We phoned ahead and didn't have any trouble getting a room on a Thursday night in May. The guesthouse was on the main street just up from the ferry so we had no trouble walking there since we left the truck on the mainland. The rooms were Puffin themed, with puffins stenciled on the tiles, curtains, and kitchen cabinets. Quirky bird obsession aside it was clean and comfortable. Ruth is a huge animal lover and it shows throughout the place.

Ruth was so very helpful directing us to places around the island where she had recently seen puffins. We knew it was still early in the season but we set out with a map she gave us in search of birds. The cliffs surrounding the golf course and along the shore were filled with them! We spent the next day walking around the island and even a bit up the volcano for a bit to waste time until the ferry that evening.

There is a little gas station across the street where we had crazy hot dogs and orange soda, our fast food of choice while on vacation. In the morning we used the kitchen to make coffee and self cater our breakfast as it is very well stocked with plates and all the things one expects to find in a home kitchen.

Hreidid & Hrafnabjorg are actually 2 small guesthouses that share a common, small backyard. There is only a tiny, dark sitting area with 1 table + computer in one of the houses (I didn’t see the other house), but there is a kitchen with a table for guest use there as well. (Breakfast is not provided.) They do have WiFi throughout the house.
There is no sink in the room and the bathrooms are shared. (They’re located only a short distance down the hall from the rooms.) Like all of the places where we stayed in Iceland, Hreidid & Hrafnabjorg is clean and comfortable. At around $78 US per night, it’s a great deal!
The people who run Hreidid & Hrafnabjorg also run the cinema next door. If you stay at the guesthouse, they’ll give you a discount to see a video of the Kirkjubæjarhraun volcanic eruption in the cinema, but we saw a great video of the eruption for free at a coffee house at the ferry dock. (The coffeehouse is not in the terminal; it’s in another building nearby where Viking Tours books their cruises. There’s a big sign for “Viking Tours” out front.)
The guesthouse is easily identified on the main street of town by the large whale mural painted on the outside. Parking is on the street, but I never had a problem finding a space.
Many people take the ferry to the island and then walk around without renting a car. Although the guesthouse is in walking range from the dock, the best puffin spotting (when we were there in July) is at the far end of the island on Storhofdi. (Be very careful when walking on Storhofdi as the grassy land ends abruptly at the edge of high cliffs!) Unless you’re really in good shape, a walk there would be a bit of a challenge.
