This beach, and everything else I saw in Iceland (which was nowhere near enough!) merits a return trip; something I don't do often as there is a lot of World to see yet.
The basalt formations were fascinating! I suppose one could say that all there is to do is look, take photos and pick up a few polished black stones, but nothing more need be done. The place is stunningly beautiful and mysterious and I'm grateful that I got a chance to experience it all.
There is what appears to be a souvenir shop/cafe under construction. I'm told that it is an enterprise being undertaken by the local farmers who own the property; nice to know there won't be a Subway or 7-11 sign on it!
Definitely merits a 6 star rating.

Tarmac road leads to car park. Walk of 100 meters over a 'boring' boulder field leads to jet black beach with staggering geological formations. Apparently amongst top ten beaches in world as voted by some magazine. Easy to see why.

Very rough seas with high waves crashing onto the beach, along with an amazing site of huge lumps of crystal clear ice and icebergs being wash up. A free attraction and a must see. Black sand, waves and Ice - very different from white sand, waves and shells!!

Arriving the beach was quite easy, as it is well indicated. It is a 15 minutes drive from Vik and then entering through a very small group of houses.
Once in the beach, you can see the beautiful basalt formations, as well as the Three Trolls, and far away on the other side Dyrholaey.
It is a place to get lost in, and walk walk walk (as long as weather allows it)

This place is so different than anywhere else in the world! It's a beautiful beach with the 3 trolls (tall rock structures just off the beach) to the left of it. The square structures on the cliffs are just mind blowing!! With 2 huge caves to stand in as well the place is just a photographers dream! We went around 12pm and the tide was getting a little close maybe look up the charts before going! Really recommend!!
