I visited with my husband and 10 month old baby. We couldn't have asked for a better holiday :) The cottage is just pure magic! In the hamlet of Parchimbaud (thankfully St Sebastien locals had heard of it!), the cottage was definitely off the beaten track, along winding one track roads past the corn fields and watchful gazes of the Limousin cattle, but this all added to its charm. Set in the beautifully landscaped grounds of the friendly and hospitable owners, the former barn conversion is picture perfect and exactly what you're looking for in a holiday home. The gardens were a particular highlight - lots of different areas for sitting, relaxing, lighting the bbq and enjoying time together.
The area is stunning. Surrounded by sweeping valleys, sparkling lakes and pretty medieval villages, it's easy to understand why so many Brits come here and never leave! St Sebastien is the nearest village but you end up driving most often to the SuperU in Eguzon (a 6 min drive) We went on wonderful trips to Lac D'Eguzon, Lac Montocuco (a quieter lake for swimming) Argenton-sur-Creuse, Gargillesse, St Benoit du Sault, Crozant, walking in the Sedelle Valley - all within a 20min drive. There were lots of festivals going on at this time of year e.g. fete du cheval and a Medieval Festival in Crozant that were a lot of fun. There seemed to be a classical concert taking place somewhere pretty much every evening. A great time to visit even though lots of the shops in the larger towns were closed as the owners were on holiday down south! We also headed a bit further afield to Zoo Parc du Beauval - well worth the 2hr drive past the sunflower fields.
One piece of advice - if planning to avoid the toll roads on the way to/from Calais leave PLENTY of time! It took us over 11 hours!! On the way to the cottage, we chose the toll roads. It cost around 40 euros in toll fees and took around 7hrs though not as pretty!
Could somewhere really be as good as these reviews make it out to be - YES!

“Parchimbaud is a small rural community blessed with peace and quiet - there is no traffic noise.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 June 2013 for a stay in June 2013

The magic of Walnut Cottage is that it is put together with a sensitivity for the vernacular, appreciation for the original and a generosity of spirit. It is a really lovely place to stay. There's no traffic noise. Parchimbaud is a small rural community blessed with peace and quiet. Such pleasure wandering down the dirt tracks that lead from the house where my little dog went into overdrive with all the new smells while politely leaving a few of her own. Yet a short drive away from all this you have everything you need.
Walk through the stunning Sedelle Valley a place much favoured by artists of the Impressionist, Fauvist and Sureallist styles, in particular Monet. Visit the beautiful villages of Crozant, Fresslines and Gargilesse. Twenty minutes away by car is Argenton-sur-Creuse with it's captivating medieval quarter. Glorious scenery, OMG!
On a practical note, Vivien and Fred, the couple who run Walnut Cottage have made and make available a beautiful garden, leave an unexpectedly generous welcome pack, have excellent tips on the local area and fully understand privacy and discretion. I have no hesitation in recommending Walnut Cottage. A genuinely refreshing experience.

“Walnut Cottage - a little glimpse of paradise.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 January 2013 for a stay in September 2012

Walnut Cottage is a little glimpse of paradise. The cottage offers a romantic retreat from which to explore a magical area of France. The cozy cottage in set within a lush and vibrant garden and has a bedroom fit for a Fairytale Princess. In the living room, kitchen and bathroom reclaimed wood completes the old-world feel – even the table-mats are hand-painted.

In contrast to the sense of stepping back in time, the cottage also offers the highest level of modern convenience. The kitchen is perfectly equipped with stove, hob and microwave. Water is hot and plentiful and the TV a real bonus.
This is somewhere we didn’t want to leave.

The light here inspired Monet and the Impressionists. The locals are kind and welcoming and Vivien and Fred are quite simply the very best of hosts. They made us feel welcomed and offered discrete guidance and support throughout the stay. It was a joy to meet such warm and experienced folks and we were very much treated as part of the family. A real pleasure..
As wildlife photographers we travel a great deal and have stayed in an assortment of awful and truly wonderful places, Walnut Cottage will become one of our favourites. Parchimbeau is an undisturbed hamlet surrounded by deciduous forest and farmland.
We were photographing all around Limousin and Charente; this was a real pleasure but the days were long. The cottage was an ideal place
to stop and relax, it’s comfortable and extremely well planned. There
are rural walks, and an amazing number of buzzards, in every direction.
One evening we spent 2 hours taking photographs within 500 metres of
the cottage. Traffic is almost non-existent and the silence is a real
joy. The Creuse Valley is just a few minutes away and is home to a
wealth of birds. We stayed in early September and would love to see the place in Spring. We’ll just have to go back again. Walnut Cottage is completely recommended to anyone looking for a comfortable, peaceful and beautiful place to stay.

In addition to exploring Limousin we visited Beauval Zoo at Saint-Aignat near Tours, This is probably the best place in Europe to see Giant Pandas. The animals live on a large island, with no glass or wire around; visitors can get amazing views at very close range. Beauval is also home to some truly unusual species such as koalas, white lions and manatees. Vallée des Singes, at Romagne
– Vienne, houses the biggest collection of primates in Europe, there
are 30 species from lowland gorillas to pygmy marmosets. Many of the
smaller monkeys are free-ranging and can be found in the trees in the
park. It’s an excellent place to watch and photograph the wildlife. Finally we spent a day at La Planète des Crocodiles, Route du fond d’Orveau, 86320 Civaux. We’ve never been to a place like this anywhere, here you can see 8 species of crocodile from all around the world. Again, there is no wire or glass to interrupt the view. A great place to take photographs.

“Everything I was looking for and more...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 October 2012 for a stay in October 2012

From the moment that we arrived at Walnut Cottage it was more than evident that both Viv and Fred, our hosts, really cared about our comfort and and made us feel extremely welcome. This was highlighted additionally by the goodies left for us in the Kitchen in th form of Fromage and Vino! Being full of interesting and useful information regarding the Village and surrounding areas, Viv and Fred just couldnt have done a better job. Such kind and warm people.

The location of the Cottage is both pefect and stunning. Set in a small rural Village just outside of St Sebastien it is ideal for exploring many sites around the area. I was looking to get away and really enjoy some fresh air and tranquil Autumn walks. We couldnt have chosen a better location. Not only is it beautiful beyond words but the wildlife is vast and everywhere we went, be it on foot or in the car, we saw a variety of different birds and other animals such as deer, rabbits, goats etc etc. We were hoping to see some otters but the time of year was off for that. It was nice knowing they were there anyway. It was refereshing being in such a picturesque part of the world that is both untouched and tranquil. The lakes and rivers near by are lovely to walk by and there is so much to do that I think if we visited every year for the next 50 years we would never run out of things to do and see.

The cottage is set aside so that night times were both dark and quiet, I dont think I have slept so well and at such ease in a long time. Overall, I cannot stress enough how peaceful and content our stay at Walnut Cottage was, made all the better knowing that Viv and Fred are such wonderful people. I wish them every luck and happiness in the future and that Walnut Cottage continues to provide happy times and memories for many years to come.
