“Perfect wedding location !”
Reviewed 29 July 2014

my husband sailed into this harbour 5 years ago - only 2 buildings existed so what a surprise he had when we drove into this new 'village'! You wouldn't find it unless you were actually looking as it is poorly advertised and very poorly signed from main road. The hotel manager gave us a little tour and we were so impressed- the chapel across the square makes this an ideal place to have a wedding abroad. Another year or so and this place will be the attraction it deserves.

The Quinta do Lorde Resort is without doubt a beautiful place and the rooms are superb. The downside is perhaps signing for everything which made me and others at the hotel feel uncomfortable at times. It perhaps should be explained on arrival that the signing for food, drinks is just a means of the hotel keeping track of goods, rather than you having to pay for items at check out.

Alas I had a bad experience with one staff Member, which I have to say the head manager of the Hotel dealt with superbly which is why this review isn't poor. It did however make me and my partner feel awkward for the remaining time at the Hotel as being verbally abused in the middle of the restaurant and at Reception isn't something that sits nicely with anyone, especially on a break. As I say though it was only one staff member who I am sure has been dealt with by the Manager who was excellent as was the Thomson Rep and the Thomson 24 hour Line which dealt with the issue very quickly.

I think anyone would enjoy this Resort and I would say try the salt water pool and go for walks as literally 20 minutes up the Hill there are some great walks to be had. I found the food good and varied and on par with other All Inclusives I have been too. I would say be careful of the hotel bus into Funchal as its a private one and the Driver can be known to leave at earlier times. Other than that I'm sure you will enjoy your stay and if you have any problems the Manager is always on hand to help you.

This was our first visit to Madeira and our experience at the Quinto do Lorde Resort will certainly take us back. We were greeted by a very charming, polite and helpful young man who, after providing us with a lovely cold glass of sparkling wine,in fluent English provided us with all the Hotel facility details and then accompanied us to our lovely sea and marina view room. The standard of the room was everything one could wish for, generous in size, immaculately clean and furnished to a high standard. No problem deciding if you prefer a bath or shower in your room this bathroom had it all, a good size bath with its own over bath shower as well as a large walk in shower cubicle and separate toilet and bidet room. And a hair dryer that actually worked!!!!!! There is a well stocked mini bar and tea and coffee making facilities. A word of caution though tea bags, coffee and milk are only provided on day one as a welcome drink. So either take your own or do as we did purchase a supply from the marina store which supplies a good range of products at very reasonable prices. We ate all our meals on the balcony with wonderful views past the resort church out to sea and the cliffs at the eastern tip of the island. The food is of a high standard and very expertly presented. Not a buffet in sight at dinner, a four course meal each night offering a choice of two starters, a soup course,a choice of three mains ( a fish, a meat and a vegetarian) and then a choice of two desserts which were all lovely. The waiting staff were all so friendly and remembered our own personal likes and dislikes, we felt very well looked after. The bar on the upper floor is very smart and they do put on gentle musical entertainment each evening but to be honest we much preferred to sit on the balcony sipping a drink still soaking up the views. There are two very clean and we'll appointed artificial pools in the hotel complex but we did find the water rather cold even in July and perhaps this is the only criticism we would have and perhaps an effort to heat the pools could be made by the management. However the natural sea front pool on the deck was delight to swim in and this is where you will find a drink and snack bar. Walk onto the deck and as if by magic a pool attendant appears with cushions &towels and places the very large parasols exactly where you prefer. For a change of scene walk round the marina and then sit and take coffee or a beer at the Captains bar whilst watching the yacht set tending their crafts and the planes arriving at Funchal airport a few bays up the coast. If you want a quiet lay back relaxing holiday can so recommend the Quinto Do Lorde. We will certainly be returning. If you want to see some of Island and don't want to rent a car we would also recommend Madeira Seekers. They provide some lovely trips in mini buses at very reasonable prices. We booked the Nuns valley trip which was €15 pp for half a day. We were so enjoying it that we extended the trip to go up to the high peaks for an extra €25 per couple. Paul our driver was so informative and let us spend as much time as we wanted at each stop. We booked him the following night when we wanted a taxi back from Funchal approx 30kms and he charged €27.50. Amazing value!!!

Room Tip: All of the rooms have good views but a sea front room is a bonus. Block h4

By day four we were on first name terms with the staff, Marcio, Sonia, Sonia, Isabelle, - you made our stay with you very special, Thank you! The staff simply cannot do enough for you, moving sun shades, sun beds etc nothing is too much trouble.
We went for a rest and seclusion from the outside world and we experienced it in spades. Quinta Do Lorde is not a place for a lively holiday it is quiet and peaceful with a setting to match anything world wide. If you want to recharge your batteries and experience quality this is the place to do it - it is some way out from any town but this adds to the peace and serenity.
We had a sea view room overlooking the marina with a view that made you feel thankful of being alive. The rooms are furnished to a very good standard although air con could be a little more efficient (nit picking). Mini bar in the room, spacious shower and separate bath in a beautifully appointed bathroom all added to a wonderful experience.
Restaurant in the main building on the second floor and most people eating inside?? Not for us, the staff were more than happy to lay a table outside on the patio again with wonderful sea views. By the third day our table was set and it seemed to catch on as the patio began to fill by the fourth day. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff.
Please support this hotel complex, it is relatively new and deserves to full at all times - don't go if you want lively entertainment and boozy nights. Do go if quality, peace and quiet, wonderful private sea front bathing areas and amazing staff.
We are looking to book same time next year and hope it will become our annual recharge.

Room Tip: Sea views rooms are worth the extra, stunning views

Whilst we had planned to holiday in Madeira, our hotel of choice was fully booked. We liked the look of Quinto do Lorde, but were very, very nervous about booking a hotel that had no reviews (we discovered later that it had opened earlier in the year). Our fears were ungrounded and we have to say this is one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in.

Spacious comfortable room, attentive and friendly staff, fabulous location. We stayed 'all-inclusive', which always makes me nervous as I like to have variety rather than the same menu every night but again, my fears were unfounded.

Of the two 'additional' options, a barbecue on the seafront and a meal in the Lighthouse, the first brilliant, the latter disappointing. In fact, that was the only disappointing aspect of the holiday. For some reason we felt the restaurant lacked atmosphere (couldn't put a finger on it) and whilst the food was very good, for the price we would have expected exceptional.

Nevertheless the rest was so good that I've decided not to mark down on that one. The hotel is of outstanding quality, one we would thoroughly recommend based on our experience and one we would return to, if there weren't so many other places in the world on our bucket list!

After passing this resort several times and admiring the design and location of it, we booked for a celebratory birthday treat. The checking was undertaken by an inexperienced young girl who failed to tell us about the charge for use of the in room safe - for a five star to charge for this is unheard of. She also failed to activate the parking card which meant contacting reception each time we exited. Our room was ok and looked out over the pool and sea. However, the two towels were very small and of poor quality. One tiny piece of soap for two people was inadequate. This was not replenished on the second day and entailed two phone calls and a very long wait before being brought some more! The bathrobes and slippers which were included and on our confirmation, were not given. We really wanted to eat in the hotel restaurant. Only one restaurant and one snack bar was open. The restaurant menu was very limited. Set menu and a la carte with just two choices for each course. The food was tepid and the main courses came with so much dried fruit it was inedible. Someone needs to train the chef and introduce a menu which offers fresh food, with adequate choices! Totally below standard and we could not face eating the same food on the second evening, so drove to nearby Machico for a good meal. Breakfast was poor. Barely warm hot buffet offering sad looking food. A chef would cook eggs but hardly present at his station and took so long to cook one egg that it was a joke. Very poor continental breakfast items. All low budget and totally at odds with this five star rating. All staff lacked training and professionalism.
The beer in the bar was sour, with no choice of bottled beers.
On checkout we found staff answering phone calls whilst dealing with our bill and one call was a personal one. Resulting in a lengthy and confusing check out. We told receptionist about lack of bathrobes etc and she did not apologise, only said she would tell someone!!
All in all, very very disappointed and would not recommend this resort. Indeed, it is apparent there is no money to sustain basic standards and I will be surprised to see it still operating in a years time.

Room Tip: Sea view is the only positive thing about some rooms
