This is a Family run hotel operating with incredibly high standards. I have read a recent review and whilst I do not have a dog, these people to me, are just lovely. Nothing is too much trouble. They are courteous, helpful and deserve certainly my thanks.
The location is terrific. A walk in the gardens lightens any darkness.
As for the food, it is out of this world. Through work I frequently eat out and the restaurant in this hotel, is up there with the very best.
Whilst we all read Trip Adviser.....I rarely review. In this instance, however, I felt it right to leave these thoughts: Lewtrenchard is 10 out of 10 for vaue, service, food and ambience.

Lewtrenchard is a mainly Jacobean manor house that was bought back by owners James and Sue Murray when the Von Essen Hotel group went into receivership in about 2012. It is a beautiful building in a tranquil setting with, I think, 14 bedrooms.
We spent a Sunday night there. I only remembered to email that morning that my wife has some difficulty with stairs. We were met by Sue Murray and courteously given an upgraded room, without extra charge, that was very easy for us to manage. James Murray was very welcoming when we went for pre-dinner drinks with a friend.
The young staff were friendly, courteous and well trained. The dinner, which included several tasters, was very good and well presented. We chose a fine Priorat from the interesting wine list.
I travel considerably and strongly recommend this Lewtrenchard Manor.

Room Tip: We did not see other rooms but I am sure the owners would advise, as they did for us.

From the minute we arrived at the impressive manor house with our dog we could not of asked for more. We were greated straight away, quickly checked in and shown to the St Clements suite, a wonderful suite accross the courtyard. We were instantly made a feel welcome, and for anyone worried by the earlier comment Bob (our dog) was also welcomed and the hotel us definitly dog friendly.

We had booked 6 nights dinner, bed and breakfast and what a treat, the food and service was of the highest quality. Every meal was amazing, we were asked if there was anything we wanted as we were there for 6 nights, however, we were more than happy with the delights offered each night by the chef.

During our stay every member if the Lewtrenchard team provided exceptional service, the service beat any 5 star hotel we have stayed in.

The location is fabulous, with so many beautiful places on the door step.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend this hotel. We will definitly go back.

Thanks to all at Lewtrenchard for such a wonderful break.

We stayed here for a weekend to celebrate husband's birthday. We were warmly greeted by the receptionist on the front desk and shown to our room. The hotel is set in a secluded location and has a lot of history and character. Our room was very comfortable with a very spacious bathroom. The only negative point I can mention about our stay would be the set dinner menu.It was rather limited and should include a lighter option of say, one or two courses. The breakfast was very good though. We wished we could have stayed longer! Thankyou to the staff there who made us feel very welcome and obviously took pride in working there. The owners should feel proud of them.

Whilst this looks an amazing building from the outside and I must admit the room we had was amazing & so was the food (so it should have been for the price £££££) but thats when the postives end!!!
We booked on the day as a last minute idea to extend our break and had booked for two nights. However, whilst having dinner on the first evening the lady proprieter who was quite nice interrupted our dinner by asking if we minded if they did not turn down our beds as our dogs were barking to which of course we said this was not a problem. It was at this point the proprieters husband then approached my partner and quite abruptly asked "Why did we not have a cage" !!! we are both easy going people but the manner in which my partner was spoken to was deplorable. In light of this we cut short our stay and were still charged a cancelation fee although the hotel was empty !!!!
It was only when we had completed our booking that we were informed of their dog policy which is when ever you leave your room, be it breakfast lunch or dinner, your dogs should be placed in a cage or in your vehicle.............!!! How many dog lovers place their dogs in a cage and in addition to this..........would you put your dog in your car in the midst of winter..............if you answered yes to those scenarios then you realy should not have a dog.
HOW CAN THIS ESTABLISHMENT BE CLASSIFIED AS DOG FRIENDLY ??

In conclusion this place is majorly overpriced & you would get more atmosphere & ambience if you were sat alone on the moon !!!

Dear pjallen69,

Many thanks for your review, we take all of our reviews very seriously. We are glad that you thought the room, food and hotel were amazing, we think so too!! I would like to bring up some points where we think there may be some inconsistencies with your review.

1) My colleague Sarah, who checked you in, was showing you around the various different bedrooms we had available when she told you of our hotel dog policy (in our room Lyndhurst). This was before you had checked in. Incidentally our policy on dogs is also on the website and in the room information so we do not make a secret of it.

2) I would like to point out that the reason for the policy is as much to do with the protection of our amazing rooms as it is for your dog. Not too long ago when our housekeeping team went to service a room while the guests were at dinner, the dog escaped and went missing for over 12 hours.

3) The majority of our guests do not mind putting their dog in the car and you may be surprised how many dog lovers have a pet cage.

4) My father may have said what you have claimed, although he does not remember doing so.. Even so he is sure he would never have meant it in the way you have taken it and sincerely apologises for any offence taken.

5) I would also like potential guests to know that we allow dogs in all our rooms and public areas except for our dining rooms, whereas The Horn of Plenty, mentioned above, only allow dogs in some of their bedrooms but not bedrooms in their main house. I suppose there are pro's and con's to all establishments.

I am sorry that you felt that our dog policy warranted a single blob/star as otherwise you seemed to like our hotel very much even if you do feel that £250 dinner, bed & breakfast was very expensive for a suite.

All of us at Lewtrenchard wish you all the best in your future travels.

It's sad to read that a couple of people have had bad experiences here. We spent a night with dinner for two and we loved everything about Lewtrenchard Manor.
We'd had a disappointing day so to pull into to the lovely surroundings of the Manor and be greeted in such a naturally friendly way was a great start.
The Manor itself is stunning with a classy darkness to its sumptuos furniture and dark oak panel walls with old portraits who's eyes follow you through the building. Our room was tasteful and well equipped with plenty of space and a view over the grounds.
One reviewer mentioned there are no tea/coffee making facilities in the room...just ask! A tray was delivered to our room instantly.
And the food...absolutely flawless delivered effortlessly by pleasant, friendly staff who made sure that class and quality was the order of the evening. Describing food is not helpful. Just know that it was beautifully cooked, impressively presented and tasted Devine from pre starters through to home made petit fours with coffee in the bar.
Nothing was a problem. Nothing was too much trouble.
It's not cheap here but it's worth every penny.
Thanks for a lovely stay

A last minute impulse took us to Lewtrenchard and we were not disappointed. Situated in a quiet valley close to the border with Cornwall it has beautiful gardens, tranquil walks and plenty of style. From the welcoming check in we took up residence in a neat, well appointed room. We had been offered morning tea/coffee delivered to the room but opted for a tray in the room. This arrived with fresh milk, tea and cafetière of fresh ground coffee. Judging from recent reviews this was a new innovation so the hotel is obviously listening. We strolled out to the garden and relaxed with a book, the attentive receptionist came out to check if we would like tea or a glass of Prosecco! Had it been poor weather there were plenty of other places to relax especially the library.
Having opted for dinner we came down at the appointed time to be greeted by name by the owner. This attention to detail is commendable. A varied and well presented meal served by personable waiting staff was full of nice touches, canapés before the meal and pre-starters with petit fours and coffee in the bar to finish. While chatting in the bar afterwards we felt that the proprietors had the knack of making you feel as though you had been regular guests for years. Upstairs to find the beds turned down and curtains drawn. We slept well and very comfortably, sparkling bathroom with nice touches, good toiletries and the perfect antidote to a steam filled bathroom, a heated mirror! A relaxed, unhurried breakfast with choices to suit those who might like a change from the usual cooked breakfast. A great place to go for a treat and all round stress-free break. We have started saving already!
