“Great place, great food, service patchy”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 February 2014

The place is great. There's a great pub atmosphere and a lovely fire in the winter. The food is great - particularly good chips and also burgers, both beef and venison, but that's not to say that the rest isn't good too. We haven't stayed but we hear the rooms are good.

The old original pub has atmosphere and there is a dining room/restaurant which is a modern addition. Of course the food is the same throughout, but the modern bit is a great contrast to the old part, comparatively sterile and cold in terms of atmosphere. The old bit is clearly steeped in history and rather shows the modern bit up.

We are intermittent regulars, going roughly every six weeks and we look forward to it every time, but if we can't get in and to a table that we like we go elsewhere.

We were looking for a village pub in which to spend New Year's Eve following a succession of fairly ordinary and in some cases, very expensive experiences. I remembered 'The Oakhill Inn' as I had passed it regularly on my journieys between Torbay and Leicestershire over the years.

A friendly voice on the telephone was encouraging so I booked a double room for the night.

There was a friendly welcome from Harry, the young barman who showed us up to Room 1. So far, so good! The room was excellent, clean and well-apppointed in a manner that could be expected of a country pub. No bling here just warmth, modern furnishings, a king-size bed and a bathroom off, big enough for a free-standing bath, WC, wash-basin and large shower cubicle. There was an ample supply of hot water and fresh towels, the bath towels being of a 'proper' size, not postage stamps!

So, would the bar and the restaurant match the quality of the room? The simple answer is 'Yes'. A selection of real ales were well kept and of a reasonable price. Lager drinkers had a choice of standard and premium beers. A comprehensive wine list was reasonably priced and the bar also stocked a good choice of malt whiskies.

Then bar staff were exceptional and very efficient and coped with the invasion of a huge number of people of all ages.

Our table was booked for 8:30pm and was ready. Families and other diners were already tucking in to their choice from either the basic menu or from a special one for New Year's Eve.

In other words, there was something to suit most tastes and pockets. We chose from both menus as each course was priced individually.. For mains, my wife had a Turbot Fillet with smoked haddock hash, topped with crunchy leaks and a caper butter sauce. The portion size was just right as was my rump steak with triple cooked chips, tomato and wild mushrooms in a red wine sauce.

Starters and sweets offered a wide choice and whilst a little expensive, the quality more than compensated for the £1 or so above that which i would normally expect.

The chef at The Oakhill Inn deserves the highest praise for the quality of the food and for managing to keep all the tables served despite the large numbers of hungry diners. The waiting staff were also some of the best I've come across anywhere.

Just before midnight, complimentary hot dogs and fizz appeared. The hot-dogs looked really good, but the meal filled us so we passed on this nice gesture! However, it was much appreciated by what I understand were mainly local people.

There wasn't a hint of any trouble despite a long period of drinking which went onto about 2am and it was good to see both young, middle aged and older people thoroughly enjoying themselves.

A disco entertained the energetic but even though it could be heard in the bar, those who chose to watch the London fireworks on a big TV screen or have a natter with new found friends could do so without being drowned out by the music.

This was a New Year celebration which will be hard to improve upon in future years and I unreservedly recommend the pub, restaurant and accommodation.

Would we go again? You bet!

Room Tip: Ask for room 1, -but not when we want it!

Had lunch with friends here today, service was very good and the food was excellent - highly recommend the Venison Burger. Welcoming atmosphere with the log burners roaring, could have stayed there all day!

Wanted a quick lunch Ian pleasant country pub - this was just right. Called in on the off chance on a Saturday afternoon. Was pleasantly surprised to find Prosecco on the drinks list - lush. I had squash fritters with a blue cheese dip - different and definitely delicious. Others had mussels, steak sandwich and burger - all lovely. Service was perfect (not in your face). Liked the decor and liked the lack of out of control kids running about. It was a good find and will return.

Very friendly staff in bar and at breakfast.
Nice menu and fantastic food, fish and chips excellent.
Would stay again as the food and staff are fab, however a few things:
Kettle had to go on the floor, room was rather cold and the bed not the most comfy, did think that £100 for B&B was a bit high compared to other places we have visited of a similar price.

We stayed here in September and had the most wonderful 2 night stay. It's set in the pretty village of Oakhill where there are plenty of walks in the surrounding beautiful countryside, plus it's only a 45min or so drive to Bath. The accommodation is very comfortable (we were lucky enough to stay in 2 different rooms due to my booking mistake!) and the rooms are dog friendly which was a bonus for us with having a dog!
The breakfast was made with local produce and was amazing. The breakfast was so big that even my husband who has a huge appetite, was still full at lunchtime!
In the evenings the pub had a welcoming 'local feel' and we enjoyed a really nice 3 course meal which was excellent value considering the quality. There was also a more 'formal' restaurant for those that preferred that. We were very impressed with the little 'extras' like OS maps to borrow and fresh milk in thermos flasks to take to the rooms.
Thanks for having us Mike- we'll definately be back again!

Room Tip: Can't remember the room number but on 1 night we stayed in the room with a roll top bath- such a...
