“Excellent value for money and superb location”
Reviewed 5 August 2012

Following a lovely 3-night stay at the Hotel Calypso, Marsalforn. I feel I must commend this hotel to anyone considering a stay on the beautiful island of Gozo. Its location is superb and the views are breathtaking. We stayed in a seaview room and the room was a standard size. The hotel rate was also very good value for money, especially considering the time of year - peak summer. We also really appreciated the pretty rooftop pool and bar area, great for relaxing and unwinding at the end of a day of, well, relaxing and unwinding! Breakfast offers a pretty good selection too offering both hot and cold options, English and Continental. The hotel's reservation and reception staff are cordial and helpful. Hotel Calypso is definitely one I return to time and again.

Room Tip: The Bay View rooms offer side views of the bay and offer a slightly larger room, whereas the seaview...

Booked with Malta direct, all transfers go like clockwork, from Exeter no problem great flying times, resort so peaceful but evenings get lovely and busy with all the locals eating out but that's fine there all so friendly and helpful, great choice of restaurants, only saw six mozquitos, got bread and fruit and salad from local supermarkets and fruit stalls so cheap for lunch to eat on the beach. Gozo is amazing so empty at times when driving around, easy to get around, bus or jeeps. Can't wait to go back to the calypso again, as it's so easy.sea views are just the job, lovely sea breeze, and sea about 24 deg all the time. Marsalforn really is the best place to be of the island.thankyou Gozo for being there please don't change.

Room Tip: Sea views are best.

We spent a couple of days relaxing in the Hotel Calypso in Marsalforn, Gozo. Our room was spotlessly clean. Comfortable, simple, well-furnished (furniture while not the latest is sound, clean and spacious). Beds were comfortable. Bathroom was super clean and well lit.

The room kept the torrid heat out by an effective air-conditioning system with 3 speeds. Very quiet at night. The TV can be updated to an LCD set. We used the roof swimming pool which while not being very big was ideal for all the people who sunbathed and needed a refreshing dip in the cool water of the pool. The several restaurants and bars and cafeteria served us well with a diversity of good food. All these food centres enjoyed an enviable view of the bay and the sea.

The breakfast was varied offering freshly cooked food, cold cuts, fresh fruit, yoghurts, Danish pastry, several types of rolls ...

We booked into this "hotel" for 5 nights and left after 1! it was beyond doubt the worst hotel that I have ever stayed in.

Upon checking in, we were greeted by one of the two receptionists with a "YA?" we told her we were checking in, She then passed us over to her colleague who gave us forms to fill out, with this we went to find our "balcony sea view room" , the room was like something from 20 years ago. the balcony was so shabby and the beds were like rocks.

The TV was not working, and when i rang down to reception asking could it be fixed, the response was "ill tell the maintenance man" and then the phone was hung up!
WE returned to the room at 11pm and low and behold tv still not working, (it's the least of that hotels problems, but if they can't get something as simple as that right, it's a bad sign)
we decided that night that we'd find somewhere else, but of course the internet in the hotel (which you've to pay for) was not working either.

Breakfast was horrific, There is a chef (possibly) standing there with a pan infront of him, and after each use he picked up a towel off the ground and wiped the pan down, (which i meant to say to the manager but forgot) absolutely disgusting! and the orange juice is from a machine and rancid!

The pool area was very poorly equipped and the only available sun lounger was a broken one!

The following morning we went to the reception and were treated so poorly it may as well have been a prank! we informed the girl that we were leaving early as we were very unhappy with the hotel, her reply was "well ye need to pay €125 now instead of €100 as that was the rate for 2 nights or more, and ye only stayed 1"! we were totally disgusted and asked to speak to the manager, he then arrived and brought us down to the end of the lobby, we sat down with him and told him our concerns , he said he regretted our disappointment and he would give us the €100 rate (how good of him!) , we told him this wasn't very satisfying but obviously we would pay,

After a 10 minute duscussion of excuses such as "how full the hotel is" and "how the coolers broke" he went and got our bill for €100, i then decided to show him my photographs of what our experience was in the room alone! and he was clearly frustrated at this point (who wasn't)!!

We walked away and went to the receptionist who we paid, the manager then reappeared telling us to "GO GO DON'T PAY" he went and spoke to her in their own tongue, and she handed us back the money,

Since we didn't pay i wasn't going to publish the pictures, just leave the review, but What really sealed the deal for me is that as we were walking out the door, the receptionist shouted across the lobby to the manager, whose name is Richard,

"oh yes mister Richard, because Televisions are sooooooo important these days" as she was ripping up our bill!
I've never experienced such unprofessionalism in my life! height of ignorance! at least
Her comment as we walked out of the hotel made us secure in the knowledge of how right we were to be checking out of this Horror Hotel and encouraged me to post pics after all!

Great staff- housekeeping were brilliant, they were so helpful and friendly and eager to tell us the best local spots to visit. The rooms were very well kept and cleaned well every day. We left valuables lying around frequently, with no bother at all. The fridge was available, despite not buying mini-bar drinks. Nobody seemed to mind us bringing water and stuff back to the hotel, which some places don't like.

There was a very effective fan and air-con (which we didn't use)

The beds were massive and exactly how we liked them (though this is personal).

The food/drink was priced competitively and the roof terrace overlooked the whole bay.

Breakfast was good, with plenty to please every nationality's quirks.

Every room had a balcony, whether sea-view or not (ours wasn't).

Like several other reviewers, I agree that the Calypso is a good three-star plus hotel. The positives: superb location, clean and spacious rooms, excellent roof top pool with superb views of the bay, and helpful staff. Negatives: the breakfast choice was limited and didn’t vary one iota all week (although the omelette station is well worth a try), the Wi-Fi went on the blink and wasn’t restored, and there were no in-room coffee/tea-making facilities. Yes, the TV could do with an upgrade but I, for one, don’t go on holiday to watch the box. All in all, a decent hotel.

This was our second stay. The Calypso dominates Marsalforn. The room was quite big. Twin beds a bit hard for my liking as i have a bad back. The place is kept spotless and we have never had any problems with our room or facilities.
The breakfast is plentiful but i feel the breakfast items such as juice could be better quality as it tasted quite watery. However never failed to get a table both early and late breakfast time. Also the buffet was kept plentiful till the last minute which was 10am.
I would recommend the Seaview room as it is lovely and relaxing as is Marsalforn itself.

Room Tip: Pay extra for Seaview it is well worth it.
