“A great holiday in a great hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 October 2013

Having never been to Malta or Gozo before, and picking this hotel from various reviews on the internet, we were pleasantly surprised by Hotel Calypso. We arranged our transport to and from Malta airport via the Calypso, and every thing went like clockwork, thanks to Mary in the hotel reservations office. We were shown to our room which was at the rear of the hotel, having decided that as we would hopefully not be staying in our room all day, the view didn't matter. The room was well furnished, although could have done with a little more storage, and had television, air con and a ceiling fan. Rooms were cleaned every day and the maids were very helpful. Breakfast was plentiful with a variety of food to suit all tastes. The roof top pool, while small, is only meant to be a plunge pool, but it is big enough to swim in. The small restaurant serves a variety of poolside snacks and drinks and reasonable prices. We recommend the sweet chilli dip chicken wings, side salad and chips. Brilliant!! If you wish to hire a car, I would recommend "Raymond's" car hire, which can be arranged via the hotel reception. Having compared other companies rates, he is extremely good value. If you want a good bar/restaurant near to the hotel, try the Smugglers Cave, just next door to the hotel. Good food nad great craic from Vincent the owner. All in all a great holiday, and yes, we would stay again.

Room Tip: If you want a sea view, then you need to ask for a front or side room. However Karena_9 was lucky to...

WHAT MAKES A 4 STAR HOTEL 4 STAR?

SERVICE & a great HOLIDAY....!

I booked a 14 night stay at the Calypso for me and my wife's 4th wedding anniversary, In order to make it as special as possible I emailed the hotel in advanced and pre booked flowers and champagne on reception. I found the communication with the hotel via email simple and efficient, they could not do enough.

On our departure the flight was delayed and due to traffic missed the ferry crossing so arrived later than expected, we were greeted by the night receptionist who was at first a little frosty. However as soon as we needed his help, asking him several questions and needing other information and he was very helpful and polite.

We booked a SEA VIEW room, a must, they all have balconies and look out over the harbour which offer some fantastic views of sunsets and sunrises.

The rooms a large and open with air conditioning, TV, telephone and safe (refundable deposit required) and mosquito screen so that you can leave the balcony door open. The bed are fine if a little hard for some, and I would suggest a rethink on the pillows. There is no tea making facility in the room which didn't bother us as we enjoyed the views from the roof terrace anyway.

A word of caution, the hotel is situated in a busy fishing, diving and dinning area so can be noisy at all times of the day and night which we loved.

On this occasion I booked half board option and found the food to be excellent although the potion size could be reduced a little for my taste. Breakfast is fantastic! fresh fruit, cheese, cooked and cold meats and fresh tea and coffee replenished continuously. The staff are hard working and very helpful, and will clear your finished plates very quickly.

Dinner options tend to include your choice of three starters, salad - soup - pasta, three main courses, fresh fish - meat - vegetarian, and two desserts fruit salad - chocolate indulgence for instance.

Breakfast: 10/10
Lunch: 10/10
Dinner: 10/10

The roof terrace has sun beds a bar which lunch service and a plunge pool, we used this space for several days and it is a complete sun trap. The plunge pool is sea water, and will be colder than the sea temp and is treated every day at 7am. I loved the pool just for the fact it took the edge off when in need of a cool down, the bar food, drinks and service were very good which made for great sunsets.

Overall the hotel is very clean the public areas are well maintained and the facilities more than adequate. The hotel is in need of some touching up here and there, but like most of the establishments I have stayed in would say it adds to the character and during our stay saw the management with contractors so watch this space.

Marsalforn is a great place to relax be seen with great restaurants and bars, the sea is warm and the people are friendly and will go out of there way to make you feel at home. A holiday is what you make it so be open and smile and everyone will do the same.

We were greeted each day by friendly members of staff with a "hello", "how was your day", "can I help" and offered suggestions on places to go and were to eat and some secrets about the island we will not share.

Thanks to all the staff and management at the Calypso for a fantastic stay and as discussed we will be returning.

I stayed here for 11 nights from 6th September 13 on bed and breakfast board basis. Things started on a low when I was given room 326, an inland view room. I opened the curtains to be faced with an unoccupied building across a narrow road along which the bin wagons travelled. The balcony was inadequate in that it was about half the standard width and no chair/table. I took an upholstered chair outside and turned sideways it just fit. Travelling alone I like to sit and read on the balcony after dinner. Staff were unhelpful telling me there were no other rooms available. The Thomson rep got me a change within minutes of telling her my disappointment. I got a Bay view room for an extra 8 euros a night, the balcony was spacious and furnished, the view was lovely, and the room 50% bigger, that was 407. I guess rooms -11/-19s would be the sea view rooms. Inland view suggests view of pool or hills not a back alley, the hotel doesn't have any outdoor areas other than a tiny pool and the bar both on
the roof.

Room Tip: If you use your balcony and like a view of the sea pay the extra for bay view or sea view rooms (I...

We had three nights in this hotel as a part of a Cosmos holiday. It was delightful. We found Marsalform to be a really nice harbour and with the benefit of a sea view there was always something to see from our balcony. It was just a few yards to the sea where there was safe swimming.

The staff were efficient rather than welcoming. The dining room was lovely with a pleasant outlook over the harbour and it was really nice to have table service rather than a buffet.

The pool was lovely and the bar on the roof was a great place for a before dinner drink with excellent views.

Room Tip: Get a sea view rather than a bay view room, it IS worth it!

Great hotel good location very pleasant and helpful staff will return for longer . Beds are on the hard side but are acceptable. Meals are good and staff excellent. We only stayed three days but should have been at least seven.

Room Tip: Take the sea view option its worth the money

:-) this was our second visit and again enjoyed the hotel and facilities. Its a shame there isn't more competition in the resort as things looked a little dated compared to last year. The bedroom furnishings are looking old and the sunbathing area was a little shabby

We stayed for 7 days and loved it. the position is excellent with great restaurants on the doorstep and along the bay. The room we stayed in had a great view of the bay and was spacious, clean and well serviced. We heard some people complaining about their room having no view and being small but you can ask for a sea/bay view when booking so I reckon they were just professional complainers! If like us scuba diving is your bag, it's well situated for most dive centres as well, all within a short walk. You really couldn't go wrong here. One more thing. spent the night with the window open. It's so peaceful in the bay I didn't get woken once by noise from traffic, people or pretty much anything else. Apart from other residents slamming room doors at 6am!!

Room Tip: Booking a bay/sea view room is a must.
