We don’t usually return to holiday venues, but a week at Tal Marina last year persuaded us to return for two weeks in Ta Xmun this year and we have no regrets. The design of these properties is really impressive - utilising the slope of the hillside the properties are constructed in very close proximity, yet each one is completely private and (apart from occasional voices and splashes) feels completely alone. The fittings are comfortable and practical, the location is stunning and the atmosphere peaceful. The owner and staff are helpful and considerate. Bella Vista has proved to have everything we hope for in a holiday (twice!)

I was aware that one poorly behaved group had caused problems for the owners - prospective visitors can safely disregard silly tantrums about fridges!

Room Tip: Remember this is a rural area - mosquitos bite, cockerels crow and there will be dust!

I was part of the group who recently stayed at Bella Vista farmhouses for a period of 44 hours. I would like to post this review in response to some of the comments written by the owner in her recent response which I feel are unfair.

The farmhouse is located in a quiet, typical Gozitan village. The view is amazing and you can enjoy the sunset from the pool area with Citadel at a distance. The rooms are spacious and decently furnished.

However, a number of shortcomings will definitely steer us clear of this cluster of farmhouses in the future.

Comment about fridge: The fridge part of the fridge feeezer provided was not working, period. The upper part of the fridge was cool through conduction from the freezer. After persuading the owner that we needed some form of refrigeration (keeping in mind the sweltering august heat) for the night we were offered a second fridge which we accepted to carry to minimize the inconvenience. If the owner finds it unethical to disturb the handyman at 8pm, is it ethical to ask your clients to carry the fridge... whatever the distance?

The second fridge was again not working having left it empty. Would the owner be so generous as to buy a new fridge knowing that both fridges were simply "not cooling enough"? You can be the judge of that.

Comment regarding cockroaches and water: With ineffective fans on the ground level and with very high temperatures outside, it is only natural to leave all apertures open as is typical for (almost) every local household. Yet I have no problems with insect infestation at my home since maintenance also involves pest control on a regular basis. I tried to point out that the problem was the wide crack in the wooden beam of the kitchen which is obviously the ideal habitat for such pests. I had taken some photos to show the problem and the pests but I will refrain from uploading them since I find them disgusting. Should anyone require verification I will be more than happy to upload them.

The huge amount of water was in fact a couple of footprints because we were enjoying the pool when the deliveryman arrived with the refrigerator. The uploaded image clearly shows the deliveryman and the "huge amounts of water".

Comment about gas BBQ: The so called (and advertised) BBQ was a stove / burner with metal plate on it, confirming similar reviews on other booking websites (see uploaded image). The "burnt paper" was simply carta forno to avoid putting the food directly on the plate as a hygienic measure. I tried to clean as much as I could. I apologise if some of it ended in the pool because of the wind.

The loud and lavish ways of our enjoyment which triggered the complaints was mostly conversational and obviously laughter. Would you expect otherwise? Why did she tell us on the last day when we confronted her with these issues if she had various possible ways to contact us? One wonders about the intentions of such a statement.

A number of other things were not up to scratch but these things you can live with: Dripping ensuite tap, 2 A/C remote controllers for 3 bedrooms and ineffective fans.

I am not keen on writing reviews, however, the arrogance with which our justified complaints were met prompted me to put pen to paper. All the shortcomings were because of something we did, according to the owner. Predicting a response to our reviews, I snapped and uploaded a couple of photos to give weight to my case.

I hope this review will be of use.

Room Tip: Ensure everything is in order on arrival. Otherwise it is an excellent place for a quiet holiday.

Just returned from 10 nights in Gozo staying at the Bella Vista Farmhouses. When you holiday in Malta or Gozo you have to expect it to be rustic and it is! OK, so the jacuzzi bath didn't work, the toaster was a bit tempramental and the TV wasn't great (a godsend as it meant no kids watching TV for 10 days!) but the accomodation was clean, tidy and had everything you need for a family holiday. The views from the Farmhouse are stunning and Xagra itself is fantastic with the most beautiful church overlooking the main square.

The only negative was that the bed in the double room was a little uncomfortable and squeaked every time you rolled over but other than that we absolutley loved it and will be going back.

Just returned from a disappointing weekend stay at Ta' Plejla farmhouse for which we were charged EUR165 per night for 6 persons. Although the farmhouse has an amazing view, there were some things which unfortunately marred our stay. The farmhouse was poorly equipped – there was no washing liquid and towels for our plates, very few deckchairs, a very small umbrella which did not provide sufficient shade for 6 persons and a gas stove instead of a bbq as advertised on the website. On our arrival we placed our food items in the refrigerator which abruptly stopped cooling. We phoned the owner who told us that we shouldn’t have placed all our items at once in the fridge. She informed us that she had a spare fridge which we then had to carry ourselves from a store down the road. This fridge also did not function. We were left for the rest of the day without being able to have a cold drink in the sweltering August heat. Luckily the meat items we had bought from Malta and brought to Gozo in a cooler were refrigerated and did not thaw. Had we bought them fresh from Gozo, we would have had to throw everything away. Only a few dairy items went stale. The following morning we phoned the owner again and we were given a new fridge. However she was arrogant enough to claim that it was our fault that the fridges were not functioning. Apart from this, there were five cockroaches crawling in the kitchen and living area – according to the owner we were also to blame as we left the window open. This was not true. We demanded that we were to be given a small discount due to the hindrances that occurred. The owner refused and also ended up looking in our rubbish to check whether we had in fact thrown away our food. She claimed that our complaints were “bull****” since she found none of our discarded food - this in fact was thrown away in a second garbage bag which we had left outside near the pool area due to the bad odours. The owner’s treatment was ridiculous and disrespectful. She did not even apologise. We will surely never return to any of the Bellavista farmhouses or recommend them to our friends.

We went to Gozo to have a short break, but our break ended up being our worst break ever! we were very disappointed!! we thought we were going to have a relaxing break with our couple friends, but we ended up stressed out more. Our stay in Bella vista Farmhouses was in August, the hottest month of the year, only to find out that the fridge was not working. After calling the owner twice, she came out to check out the fridge, and instead of excusing herself for the inconvenience, she tried to get the right out of the situation, giving us the most ridiculous excuses to get her way. She than gave us a second fridge, telling our husbands to go and get it from her house. So at about 8 o'clock at night, instead of relaxing with our husbands, they ended up delivering a fridge to this farmhouse, only to find out again that the second fridge did not work either. We had loads of things that needed to be refrigerated such as meats, dips, milk, etc but we had to chose the most essential things and put them in the freezer, but since the freezer was very small some things had to be left out! The next morning we called her again to tell her that neither of the fridges were working...having to have tea with iced milk in the morning! FINALLY a new working fridge came at about noon! the moment we confronted her about the inconvenience she caused us, she told us that we can get out of that farmhouse that minute and pay her for the nights we stayed there! The fridge was part of the things that we found not working in the farmhouse. The ceiling fan makes a lot of noise, but does not make any difference whether they are working or not! One of the en-suites had water dripping continuously on the floor, at night we were invaded by cockroaches, and the so mentioned BBQ was just a burner outside! Apart from all this the main bathroom does not even have a key in the lock, so while you’re using the toilet, at any moment, anyone can come in on you! And when they tell you that Bella Vista Farmhouses are self catering they truly are!! Since not even the most essential things such as a small liquid soap and a sponge to wash a plate or a cup!

I was really disappointed and disgusted with the service we got there, and definitely would not go there again!!

The only positive thing that the farmhouse had was a picturesque views!

Room Tip: Do not stay at Bella Vista Farmhouses!

I would like to answer back to this 44 hour holiday spent by clients coming over from Malta, starting from a 4pm check in on a Friday and a 12pm check out on a Sunday.

-Comment about fridge:
Our clients were happy with the farmhouse. 2 hours later (6pm) they phoned to tell us that the fridge is not cooling enough. Bearing in mind that the fridge was full to the brim with food brought over from Malta, as is the typical trend with Maltese clients, I advised them to give it some chance for the fridge to adapt to this temperature. 2 hours later (8pm), they phoned again stating that the fridge is not cooling enough. After visiting them and inspecting the fridge, I noticed that the freezer and the upper part of the fridge was good, the lower part wasn’t. It is our practice that we keep an extra fridge in our stores as a spare. Since, in my opinion, it was unethical to call up the handyman at 8 in the evening, I asked if it was possible for the 3 male guests in the farmhouse to carry it over a few doors away, to which they willingly volunteered.

On delivering this fridge, I advised them to leave it for some time until the gas of the fridge settles down properly.

Saturday, 10am they phoned again stating that the second fridge was not cooling enough. To ensure that they will not be disappointed, I immediately made some phone calls and ordered a brand new fridge. Considering the fact that the stores of the white goods suppliers will be closed on Saturdays, the manager I called did his utmost best to ensure the delivery of the fridge as early as possible, which was infact delivered in just 2 hours’ time (12pm). Whether this quality of service is deemed good or not I leave it up to the readers to justify this.

-Comment about insects: on my third and last visit prior to their departure on Sunday, this time they complained there were cockroaches everywhere. On my second visit to deliver the fridge, I could observe that the kitchen, the sitting, the dining and the hall area (all in level with the pool area outside) were all soaked with water carried from the pool, so much so I grew very much concerned that the delivery man might slip whilst carrying the fridge. Furthermore, every possible opening towards the pool terrace was left wide open. Therefore, one could not exclude the intrusion of such insects especially so if the farmhouse is located in an area with plentiful countryside. Such huge amounts of water inside the house could only be possible if the doors were left open for a substantial amount of hours. How could one exclude the intrusion of insects in view of all these facts?

-Tap water Drops:
Considering the soaked floors in the farmhouse, I find it quite cheeky to complain about a few drops of water in the ensuite bathroom.

-Gas BBQ:
Every farmhouse has a gas BBQ consisting of a hot plate heated by an underneath flame supplied by an LEG gas. This gas cylinder is supplied free of charge. This system is clean, neat and effective ensuring that no ashes or burning material are deposited by any breezes on the terrace floor or into the pool. It is disappointing to note that after their departure, we found remains of burnt paper on the BBQ which eventually were blown by the breeze and ended up in the pool, thus the whole idea of utilizing a BBQ with gas within the farmhouses.

Furthermore, the day after, the local neighbors told me how annoyed they were of these 6 clients’ very loud and lavish way of enjoying themselves up until the early hours of the morning. Therefore, I find it very hard to believe; quoting client ‘our break ended up being our worst break ever!’ leading me to believe that on writing these two reviews these clients had other intentions on their mind.

Just returned from 7 nights in Gozo and 3 nights in Malta.
In Gozo, we stayed at Ta' Emily, this was accessed through the underground car park, it was not a farmhouse but an apartment (sleeps 4 max) the bedding looked dirty in fact I found hairs on the sheets, all the taps were limescale encrusted and the toilets needed dome bleach down them. we were not greeted by anyone and eventually found the reception lugging our cases!! the TV didn't work and we had no iron, despite asking for one. the bed was really uncomfortable, we almost considered sleeping on the sun beds!
On the plus side, the view was amazing, it was very quiet and the pool man was really nice, making sure the pool was clean and it's free WI FI.The village is lovely but we will not be staying at the Bella Vista again, which is a shame as we had been really looking forward to it.

Room Tip: ask for a farmhouse with a front door and not access through the underground car park, higher units...

Have stayed in Gozo a few times now and just fell in love with the island. The laid back atmosphere that is all around the island is infectious ! Came in July so the weather was by far the best we have had on a holiday ! Did not see a cloud in the sky the whole time. Have stayed at bella vista a few times also and have enjoyed it. Monica is great so helpful and accommodating. Will appeal to some not all! Some small changes would make it all round fantastic but just the odd details are missing. Some TLC is needed and updating in our opinion but everyone's taste is different ! None the less will be coming back to Gozo in the near future ! Try Tmun Mgarr on the harbour ! Best food we have tasted !
