“Good but flawed”
Reviewed 11 December 2010

Perched on an escarpment with fantastic views of Victoria and the Marsalforn Valley, the SW facing terrace is a lovely place to sit out. There is a BBQ (gas, not coal/wood) and some plastic seating & table and sun loungers.

Despite what some reviews have said, the swimming pool was clean enough. Sure, flies and petals build up but the man comes around once or twice a week to hoover them up but a skim net is provided. It can get a bit breezy... The pool was unusable unfortunately in late September: too cold. Oh well, the sea was just fine.

The apartment was in good nick but there was no frying pan (just a wok) and I think basic stuf like salt, sugar, oil, tea, washing up liquid & sufficeint toilet rolls should have been provided. There was a faint smell & feeling of dampness in the second bedroom which is insufficiently ventilated but well air-cooled. My biggest gripe was the floor which has clearly never been dusted and there was no broom to do it ourselves. Cleanliness could do with improving.

However, negatives aside, the farmhouse apartments are very well situated and everything is conveniently nearby. Gozo is small but DO NOT think of coming here without a hire car. You have a personal underground parking space and there is free washing facilities too.

Monica, the owner/host is friendly & helpful as was the maintenance man whose name I forget.

Beware if you are arriving late on a Saturday as the shops are closed on Sundays!

This would be a five star rating but for the disappointing kitchen provisions and dirty floor.

When I first came across the bellavista website I was truly glad it is well detailed and all the photos are there to see, which avoids any nasty surprises. Then I read some reviews about the place. As I do usually I first start with the negative one's which left me a bit perplexed, but as they were dated, and the majority were positive I chose a farmhouse. I am very glad I did so! At arrival I was welcomed by a lovely gozitan lady (Monica) and she showed me around the farmhouse and later her daughter (Maria) came by to welcome us and give us the details about the amenities and free internet. The views from the terrace are truly amazing, one can practically see the entire island from the terrace with no obstructions. The pool was very clean and freshed us up when we could not stand the heat. Thier office is located a few meters away from the farmhouse where i booked an amazing boat trip round the island. They practically helped us with every query we had about the places to visit. On the whole one of the best accomodations I have ever been. Infact next summer I will be there again :)

We enjoyed our stay at Bella Vista Farmhouses. These apartments were located in the centre of Gozo Island. Our apartment was clean, had a lot or space and the swimming pool was lovely, big, clean and deep, but not suitable for non-swimming children. Gozo is quite rural and we enjoyed the tranquility out there. The weather was hot, the beaches were fine and the swimming pool was perfect for cooling down. Staff was friendly and helpful. Restaurants on Gozo were nice and cheap. We enjoyed our week in Malta.

Bella Vista farmhouse are very well run and nicely appointed. The views across the valley are lovely - you get a nice sunset over the hills. The welcome pack of bread, ham etc gets you off to a good start; then there are local shops to provide for your needs - try the butchers next to the church. Restaurants such as Nina's and Oleander's are within walking distance and are highly recommended. The staff will arrange your transfer from/to the airport and hire you a car, if you wish. Although we enjoyed a few quiet days around Xagra, we hired a small car for eight days, in order to visit the varied beaches and sights around Gozo, with ease. (The buses are fine but not flexible and a lot of walking is not advisable in the heat). The car hire team is extremely helpful. Gozo is a lovely destination - particularly if you value a bit of peace and quiet. Best bits - St George's festa in Victoria (great view of the fireworks from our patio!), the beach at Ramla, snorkelling in Dwejra Bay (v. rocky) and a diving taster session in Xlendi. Worst bits - none really , although the farmhouse got a little hot at times - the sea breezes and fans help but there is no air-conditioning.

Me and my girlfriend have spent one unforgettable week in the Farmhouse "Ta Wenzu". Everything was absolutely perfect and Monica (the owner) was really nice and she gave us all kind of useful information for our holiday in Gozo. I recommend everyone these lovely Farmhouses and the beautiful isle of Gozo.

We have really enjoyed our stay at the Bellavista. Our farmhouse was very clean, well taken care of and was a good size for the 5 of us. We spent most of our time outside by the terrace (we do not get alot of sun at home). We had a breathtaking 180 degree view of the countryside beneath us, the citadel in Victoria in the middle and the sea on the far right. It was just stunning, especially during night. The citadel was all lit up.
The staff, especially Monica really took good care of us, right from the start.
There is a restaurant very near the Bellavista complex only a 20 second walk , and was perfect for eating out during the evening when we did not feel like cooking very much. The nearest stores are also withing good walking distance.

Gozo is a beauty and has alot to offer. It has several realxing spots and the locals are very geninue and charming in their simplicity. We were left astound by how much we fell in love with this island.

How can you describe the Bellavista Farmhouses in Xahgra, Gozo. Well, If you like loud music bars, and gangs of drunken teenagers – go else where, you won’t find them here; If you like rows of amusement arcades and café’s selling greasy burgers, and ‘English’ fish & chips – go to another country. If you like genuine, safe, unspoilt culture, and real value for money – read on, if you like good value cuisine and fine wines – your in the right place.

To the front, some of the houses appear like simple town houses. However being perched on the side of the Marsalforn Valley, the rear of the Farmhouses offer a fantastic view of virtually half of Gozo. From the Citidel of Victoria to your front (which looks marvellous when all lit up at night), the view of the valley takes in the towns of Ghasri, Zebbug, right around to the sea over Marsalforn. The exclusively small and carefully designed complex features privacy, tranquil silence, and (facing West / South West) direct sunshine from about 9.30 am right through to the spectacular sun sets. All the Farmhouses and underground garages can be accessed by a central plant lined ally way, and the roof’s of the lower farmhouses are cleverly landscaped and disguised so not to disturb the view from the upper residences.

The Farmhouses are spacious and cool inside, lined with glazed limestone and tiled floors. The bedrooms are a good size, clean, and the pine furniture creates a rustic ambiance. Although not air conditioned, the large ceiling fans create a cooling breeze to aid a good nights sleep. The bathrooms are spacious, with plenty of towels and hot water from the immersion heaters. The kitchen lies adjacent to the outside dinning area, which is handy for serving drinks. Gas cooker, large fridge / freezer, and all the expected utensils help making snacks and breakfast as simple or as fancy as you like. A nice addition is the outside grill, great for cooking the local bacon and sausages, or even toasting your own garlic bread to accompany the odd bottle of wine (or two – since the local wines start from €1.20 per bottle they are indeed of very good quality and sampling a few will not break your budget). Obtaining food / supplies is simple, the nearest store being 6 minutes walk away, and again the cost of provisions is a far contrast from the prices in Ireland and the UK. The sun deck area is a very respectable size, not over looked by the other houses, and could easily accommodate up to 6 sun loungers (which have their own soft cushions). The pools are freshwater, pump filtered, and come with cleaning nets to catch any leaves that blow in from the raised plant beds that dot the patio. The pool is cold in the mornings (you may be braver than I), but by mid afternoon have warmed to make a refreshing change to soaking up the sun and the view. The complex itself also has an internet area, a launderette, and a reception / information point. The facility is managed by Monica, who is the most considerate and helpful hostess you ever hope to meet. Before we booked, we had several rounds of e-mail communication which were very prompt, informative, and rapidly built a genuine rapport and trust.

Xaghra itself is a simple rural town, and most life surrounds the square faced by the most ornately decorated Catholic church. Meals out will cost between 15 – 20 euro’s per person for starters, main, & drinks. Three restaurants line the square, of which, ‘Breeze’ offers slightly better cuisine, although all are worth an evening out. Slightly further away, walking towards the Gantija Temple is ‘Xi-Xi’s’ Chinese Restaurant (about 18 minutes walk from the Farmhouse), this is well worth a visit as well.

For day time entertainment, a car is essential (although you can easily walk to Victoria in about 20 minutes), and rental can be easily arranged through Raymond at adventure car hire just up the road from the Farmhouses (Monica will help organise this for you; it’s also the same company that facilitates the very reasonable airport / ferry transfers). Driving around is surprisingly very easy (and remarkably well signposted), and Marsalforn, Victoria, and Xlendi are well worth a visit, as well as Ramala Bay, Dwejra, and Dahlet Qorrot.

I can’t see Gozo being everyone’s choice, but I am not everyone and I’m sure a lot of other people aren’t either. Simply, if you want a chill out holiday, scenic views, rustic charm, good food, genuine culture, privacy, nice people, and a quietness away from the madding crowd – then this could be your best holiday in years, it certainly was ours.
