Description: The story of Ta’ Frenc as we know it today is the story of two very young men, Ino Attard and Lino Cefai, who, more than 30 years ago, recognised in the crumbling limestone walls of this centuries-old farmhouse, a possibility, a dream, a promise, a renaissance. Literally stone by stone, step by step archway by archway, they restored the building without destroying its soul. Original features such as the animal mangers were retained and these are now a feature of the bar area. The high-ceilinged airy interior is divided into different areas by archways and screens. Mature trees were retained, and others planted. And thus they created Auberge Ta’ Frenc, which opened its doors to the public on 22 May 1982. Checked red and white tablecloths, rustic French-style furniture and a classic French menu greeted their first guests, many of whom remain faithful customers today, of the internationally renowned restaurant now known simply as Ta’ Frenc Restaurant. Despite its name and pronunciation, Ta’ Frenc has nothing to do with France. It means Francis’ place; Francis was the farmer who owned the building.

We enjoyed lunch here having been recommended this as one of the best places on Gozo to eat an it was really very good. Beautifully presented in a lovely environment - in the countryside surrounded by a few trees etc.
I ordered the Lobster bisque - The lobster bisque was gorgeous with generous bits of lobsters. My husband had rabbit ravioli which had very tasty filling but with the quite thick pasta that seems to be common here in Malta. I had a second starter to follow of duck - really lovely with a tomato jam My husband also had duck dish but a main course of duck breast with quite a sweet sauce. Enjoyable but he felt a bit too sweet. We had read about the crepe suzette and both had those - it was fine but didn't really wow me it didn't have a very intense flavour of orange but was beautifully prepared and served in front of us. The staff were friendly and helpful although possibly at the beginning of the year the young waiting staff were still learning but they were enthusiastic and tried the very best. The Maitre de was very attentive.

First of all- the building is amazing. There is a really nice atmosphere.

There was a wedding on at the time of our visit, which we were told about upon booking- but this didn't affect our meal at all and it was nice seeing the party enjoy themselves! The waiters were very attentive and we didn't have to wait to long for our meals.

The food was nice, the starters I tried was a little on the adventurous scale, and I'd never seen it before on a menu either- I like trying something a bit different! My main was very delicious too.

It was a lovely experience.

Last week my boyfriend and I went back to ta Frenc, and we never get tired of going. Apart from the ever changing menu, so there is always something new to try, the food is always fantastic! The ambiance is simply elegant, charming and relaxing. The staff are attentive, professional and helpful.

We have been to most of the restaurants which are ranked higher than Ta Frenc' and we cannot understand how or why. If you want to go out for the best meal in gozo, choose nowhere else apart from this place. We love it :D

We ate here as a party of six including our young daughter to celebrate a birthday during our holiday on Goza. We booked in advance but in fact there were only two other tables filled (it was a Tuesday lunchtime in December). The location in an old farmhouse with surrounding garden is just beautiful. We were a little worried about taking a young child to such an upmarket restaurant; however the waiter made a fuss of her and produced a high chair and there was a changing table in the toilet. The service throughout was efficient but unobtrusive. We ate from the market menu (a set menu featuring seasonal produce) but had to ask for this menu to be produced. The food was delicious: a highlight for me was the starter of a perfectly poached egg encircled by ham. The octopus stew was also memorable. We would definitely return when back in Malta.
