I came to Masaxlokk twice. Once was on the sightseeimg tour bus and stayed for an hour or so. I wanted to come back on Sunday to see the fishing market. I caught an early bus from Valletta and arrived by 8am. The market itself was okay. I was a bit let down as i thought it was a supposed to be a fishing market, but it was a general market.

I had read about the beauty of Marsaxlokk, with the colorful boats and beautiful blue water and couldn't wait to see it. Such a horrible disappointment.

Be aware that the bay is a long bus ride from Valletta. Not a deal breaker, and we knew about that. But after all that time, you would like a good experience. We made the mistake of going on a Sunday, which is when they hold a weekly market. Only a small part of this is the local fish market, which would normally be a cool cultural sight in which to immerse yourself. However, most of the stalls are simply selling tourist trinkets and cheap plastic shoes and flip flops. It was so crowded you could hardly move once you entered the "tent zone", even to get yourself out of it. And even worse, the market tents blocked the views of the boats on the water. We managed to get a few nice shots, but it was completely not worth the aggravation.

Another Sunday issue reared its head when we attempted to get the bus back to Valletta. After waiting more than 30 minutes at the bus stop (with several other people), we found out that buses on Sundays (apparently) are few and far between. A long, hot, unfulfilling day. For us, this location was highly overrated and we would not visit again. If you do, manage your expectations.

We visited Malta on a Sunday during a Mediterranean cruise and went on an island tour. During the tour we visited Marsaxlokk for lunch. Unfortunately, the fish market operates on Sundays, and the village was mobbed with people. It was difficult to find a place to eat with available seating, and everything was severely congested.

Marsaxlokk is a neat looking place. There are lots of restaurants and places to visit. But it might be a good idea to avoid it on Sundays.

We were recommended to visit this place, we were told it was a quiet traditional fishing bay were you could get traditional Malta meals. We went on the hop on hop of bus which dropped us by the harbour. Unfortunately it is now very commercial, very busy with an outside market and has lost its charm as it is very dirty with building works being carried out and rubbish all around the place. There are quite a few restaurants at the front if the harbour offering burger and chips etc and we found it difficult to find a place that served traditional food.

Lovely little fishing village. Plenty of cafes and restaurants situated along the waterfront which is full of traditional brightly coloured small fishing boats. Walk round the far side of the bay to find a small beach.
Daily market to browse round without being hassled.
