“Historic Palazzo in the Silent City”
Reviewed 23 July 2014

There are many, many wonderful things to say about this place. It is in a beautiful, historic building built into the city walls. Our room, #8, had a beautiful, large bedroom with separate sitting area, lovingly decorated with antiques. The view from the living area was over the interior atrium (where we watched a small wedding happen on our second day!); the view from the bedroom and bathroom was of the surrounding countryside. Lovely. As a result, the sleeping area had a lot of natural light; the sitting area was considerably darker because of the interior "view." The welcome was friendly and we got helpful service throughout our stay. And the pool, at the nearby Xara Lodge, was a wonderful respite from the summer heat (and staff person at the pool bar was wonderful!) Mdina, with its yellow limestone buildings, is absolutely gorgeous, and particularly so around sunset (when the buildings turn a lovely, golden yello) and at night, when if you squinted and didn't pay attention to what people are wearing, you could be fooled into thinking it's 500 years ago. The gourmet restaurant was delicious, and located at the rooftop level (also where breakfast was served) - great view of the countryside. Janicke deserves special mention for her friendly and professional service the night we were there.

So why not 5 stars? We had a few blips. We booked a 4-night package which came with free airport transfers. Yet when we arrived at the airport, our ride was nowhere to be found. After wandering around for awhile, we realized our ride was not coming so we took a taxi to the hotel. When we checked in and I told the staff person at reception what had happened, she asked me why we took a taxi. I told her there was no one there to meet us. She seemed perplexed and took both my reservation (which clearly stated we would be met at the airport) and my receipt for the taxi, and promised we would be reimbursed. However, she made no record of it, so on our last day, we had to go through the exercise again with the staff person who was on that morning. We ultimately had our taxi fare refunded, but it shouldn't have been such a production. That said, once we got our initial frustrations out of the way, we were welcomed with Kinnies and nuts, and our room was cleaned and made ready for us quickly, despite our very early arrival. Much appreciated. Another minus -- and as noted in some other reviews, the room is a bit musty/mildew-y. It didn't make much of a difference to our enjoyment of the room, but does keep it from being "perfect." One thing to keep in mind (and this doesn't have much to do with the hotel, but rather with Mdina itself) is that if you are going to travel to some of the more outlying archaeological ruins, bus transport is not easy and you may want to consider hiring a car for a day or half a day. It's expensive but makes it a whole lot easier.

Beautiful location and well run. The staff are extremely kind and professional.
Common parts are tastefully decorated..........perhaps rooms could do with a revamp.
My only regret is that I had no view from my window.

Room Tip: Choose a room with an island view.

Highs: location, views, beautifully appointed guest rooms and common areas, stunning food and service at Du Mondion restaurant. Top tip: splash out on a room with a hot tub - fantastic views over Malta.
Lows: for high tech buffs you may find the televisions below par; ladies may disapprove of hair dryers but here we are nit picking!
A fabulous stay - friendly, professional staff, excellent service and a very memorable place to have been privileged to stay in.

Room Tip: The rooms with terrace and hot tub are sublime for views and offer a very romantic setting. Our chi...

Our third stay at the Xara (last one in 2008), and this time for just 3 nights before moving on to Valetta for another 3. As others have noted, Room 14 has a lot to commend it - the private terrace and jacuzzi provided a perfect place to relax after a busy morning exploring the City. On our last visit we had Room 3, which, although very spacious and on 2 levels 9with a spiral staircase), only had a view of the blank wall opposite!

Our 3-night package included one dinner at De Mondion (this time without wine). Although the food was as delicious as ever, the presentation was not as stylish as before and the menu seemed less interesting/imaginative. Did I get a sensation of cost-cutting? However, the breakfast offering was still excellent, and dining at Trattoria AD 1530 was as delightful as ever, providing excellent value and huge portions.

We noted some of the bamboo screens on the restaurant terrace were looking rather battered, and our terrace umbrella (delivered after we requested it) had seen better days, didn't fit the stand properly and was of such a basic design that it couldn't cope with the breeze. Details like those undermine what should be an unquestionable 5-star rating.

All staff we encountered were friendly and helpful, and we will undoubtedly be returning again next year. Just a little more attention/expenditure on details is needed to prevent this wonderful hotel risking losing its much-deserved high reputation.

Room Tip: The more you spend, the better it gets.

Stayed only one night at this beautiful place in jacuzzi room and loved it! Hotel staff was kind, friendly and helpful! The old building is unique and the room is well designed and managed. The food quality at the next door restaurant was excellent. Try the Maltese starter plate. It is delicious. They have big portions. Do not miss your stay at The Xara Palace !!!

Room Tip: Choose a room with jacuzzi

We are a group of eight who returned for a second visit to Xara Palace, Mdina. We would not consider staying anywhere else on the island. The rooms are individually furnished and very comfortable. Most have a spiral staircase which would not be suitable for the elderly or infirm. We had a wonderful meal on the terrace of the De Mondion Restaurant. The views were magnificent and we were treated to a firework display from a nearby fiesta. This visit we were able to swim in the pool at the nearby Xara Lodge. We all agree that it is a perfect place to enjoy peace and calm.

We stayed at Xara Palace on our wedding night and I stayed the night before my wedding with one of my bridesmaids. Our suite, room 4, was tastefully decorated and extremely roomy. The shuttered windows look inwards to the silent city. As such, the room lacks an abundance of natural light but is very cool in temperature which was welcome when the room was filled with my five bridesmaids etc on the big day in warm June temperatures! Breakfast on the terrace was spectacular with amazing views. The staff were fantastic and so helpful bringing things to the room. Such a memorable stay at such a special time in life!
