“One word - AMAZING!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 September 2009

We stayed a couple of nights at the Xara Palace for our freiends wedding which was held at the hotel. the whole time we were there was amazing. This hotel is in a fabulous position overlooking the country, the food was out of this world and the rooms were to match. A definate must in Malta!

It is supposed to be the best hotel in Malta, and I guess it is !!!
Wonderfully located (trully) IN the walls of the old fortified city... a piece of history, the charme of a Relais & Chateau...
Service as every thing was perfect !
If you can afford it, you should definitely go !
Only negative point : you cannot even enter the old city with your car without a 30€ permit, even to unload your luggage, and the hotel does not propose to send you someone to help...

The Xara Palace is a very charming small (17 rooms) hotel set in the walls of Mdina the old medieval capital of Malta. The decor is soothing in gentle shades of grey with warmer highlight colours, orange and yellow. The hotel is deeply quiet - something to do with the mighty stone walls perhaps. The staff are lovely, attentive without being overpowering. We had room 10 which has sweeping views over the island. There is nothing else like it on Malta or Gozo. We did not eat in the De Mondion restaurant this time because the current dip in the euro rate makes it rather expensive. Also the food is very elaborate which isn't as tempting in the July heat. The hotel is expensive but there is a five nights for the price of four in summer deal this year. Even if you can't afford a week, treat yourself to a night or two. Mdina is a wonderful place to stay and a wander round the ramparts in the cool of the evening is a special experience.

From the greeting to the goodbye the staff could not be faulted. They remained polite and professional throughout and the sommelier was brilliant.
The bed was like sleeping on a huge marshmallow and we were kindly given a free upgrade.
A night we shall never forget.

Really exceptional hotel. We had a gorgeous duplex! The room was elegant and we really enjoyed lounging in it. The staff were incredibly helpful. Arranged cars, dinners and things to see. They even gave us a complimentary drink when we registered. The food at the restaurant may be a little overated, but a wonderful hotel. Period.

This place certainly takes some beating for sheer character. It occupies a grand old building in the magnificent city of Mdina. This city has not changed in any significant detail from the time it was rebuilt following an earthquake in 1693, and the charm of it is such that you could almost think you’ve entered a time warp.

On entering the hotel we passed through into a most attractive inner courtyard, which now serves as a lounge area (this has been fitted with a discrete glass roof that is not visible from the outside of the building). We found the greeting at reception very friendly and efficient. In spite of the fact that we arrived 20 minutes past midnight, it was no trouble at all for the gentleman on reception to bring us a couple of beers.

Our room also had bags of character. This was on two levels: on the lower level was a spacious sitting area, kitted out with some nice pieces of antique furniture. The bedroom and bathroom were on the upper level, which was accessed via a spiral staircase. The bathroom was in marble and would have been most impressive but for the poor quality of the workmanship. A few of the pipes were leaky and unfortunately this resulted in a musty smell, as remarked upon by a previous reviewer. The ancient air-con system also leaked water into the room and had the added disadvantage of being exceptionally noisy. One other quibble is that the room was a little grimy and would have benefited from a good spring clean.

Breakfast was served on an open terrace on the second floor. This offered spectacular views from the centre of the island all the way to the sea. The choice and quality of the food was not as good as you would expect in a deluxe hotel in the UK, but it was perfectly adequate and the service was excellent.

We didn’t dine in the hotel’s main restaurant, but we did try the downstairs trattoria one evening. The food here is okay if you select from the menu carefully – go for the things the Maltese themselves would eat, rather than anything international. There are also some restaurants in the immediate vicinity, but, again, these are nothing special (Malta is not really a destination for lovers of fine food and wine).

In summary, by international standards this hotel falls a little way short of being truly luxurious, but in respect of character it is second to none and the standards of service are very high – easily the best we found anywhere in Malta. It is mainly in consideration of the excellent service that I’ve given four stars.

On arrival at the hotel, I was greeted by the receptionist eating burger and chips at the reception desk! Despite paying 325 euros per night ("special rate"!!!!) I was expected to carry my own luggage to the room. On arrival at the room the smell of dampness was overwhelming despite the fact that this is a very old hotel this should be sorted out. The bathroom was in major need of refurbishment to get it up to standard and there seemed to be bad staining round the very cheap plastic toilet seat. The light in the bathroom which glued on to the mirror was falling off as was the flush on the toilet. Despite making clear I was travelling alone, my welcome letter was addressed to Mr and Mrs.

I was booked in to an executive duplex suite and the terrace outside was very very shabby and the hot tub and surrounding area was seriously dirty. I was moved to another room and, as the outside hot tub was cold, I was informed that a maintenance man would heat the tub first thing the next day. This didn't happen. All I can say is, in my opinion, this is a very shabby hotel and the first impressions from the receptionist leave a lot to be desired to call themselves 5*.

I was devastated arriving here and, ater a sleepless night in a smelly room, I asked to see the manager first thing the next day as I was so unhappy. I was informed that I could have a partial refund and ended up paying 645 euros for one night's stay (was booked in for four nights so they only refunded two nights - after persuasion). I feel robbed and violated. I was SO looking forward to a very special stay at a first class hotel and had saved up for ages to pay for this. All I can say is if you are thinking of going to the Xara Palace please think twice and perhaps visit the hotel before you book. I feel very very leftdown by this hotel and its management and I have lost a lot of money.
