Owner description: OPEN MONDAY - SUNDAY from 09.00 Till 17.00Hrs (last admission at 16.30Hrs). St.Paul's Catacombs are a typical complex of interconnected, underground Roman cemeteries that were in use up to the 4th century AD. They are located on the outskirts of the old Roman capital Melite (today's Mdina), since Roman law prohibited burials within the city. St Paul's Catacombs represent the earliest and largest archaeological evidence of Christianity in Malta. The site was cleared and investigated in 1894 by Dr A.A. Caruana, the pioneer of Christian era archaeology in Malta.

“malta 2014”
Reviewed 8 July 2014

Travelled to Rabat and the adjoining city of Mdina by bus. The journey was easy and only costs 1euro and 50 cents to travel by bus all day. We made our way through the beautiful and ornate city of Rabat to St Peters Catacombs. As with all of Maltas churches and cathedrals it was absolutely stunning, the catacombs were very interesting and good value for money.

“Worth a visit if you are in the Mdina area”
Reviewed 4 July 2014

We visited St Peter's Catacombs while in Rabat, we combined this with a visit to the WW2 tunnels, the grotto and the museum. Plenty to see and do and a great price of 5 euro each, very good value for money!

“Interesting but a bit confusing”
Reviewed 4 July 2014

Hold your audio guide to your ear and make your way carefully down the steps and around the levels of this ancient Christian burial site. There's a lot to see and some fascinating history of the early Christian communities in Malta (though not as far back as Paul).
It was all a bit confusing though. The guide and the signposts between them were not easy to follow and often the descriptions you are hearing don't seem to tally with what you're seeing. At one point it told us to look at the red markings that showed early Christian imagery. We were desperate to see these and we looked and looked but never did find them.
A memorable place, even so, and I'm glad we saw it.

“Not really St. Paul's ;)”
Reviewed 1 July 2014

The catacombs derive their name from their vicinity to St. Paul's Church in Rabat and have no historical link with St. Paul, having been used in the 3th-7th centuries if I recall correctly. Anyway, interesting to see, provides evidence and info of Christianity in Malta in the early centuries, but after the Catacombs of St. Sebastian in Rome and such it wasn't mind-blowing.
