This is a tired hotel that only gets it's 4 star rating due to the facilities that it shares with the 5 star Fortina Spa. The hotel needs a refurb and so do the reception staff. Having spoken to numerous guests staying in the 5 star hotel the reception staff in both hotels are abrupt, unhelpful and see the guests as nuisance, they need some serious training , This is a real shame as the Maltese people are the friendliest and most helpful you can meet. The hotels have some plus points, the various pools are great, especially the one overlooking Valetta. The most confusing thing about the hotels is the packages available to eat in the various restaurants available to the hotel guests. The hotels have 5 restaurants on site, but I defy anyone to work out the differences between half/full board packages depending on whether you are staying at the 4 or 5 star hotel. The only other downside is the "in your face" timeshare sales machine for the 5 star hotel, BE WARNED they are persistent, slick and the price of a week isn't cheap! Last thing, Wi Fi in the hotel is rubbish. even in reception at the 5 star hotel.
Haviing said all that we had a great time, the weather was great, and the position overlooking Valetta was wonderful and the Maltese food definately ensures you won't go hungry!

Dear DavidofWatford,

We would like to thank you for posting your feedback on this website. We would like to assure you that your comments regarding Reception staff and Wifi have been passed onto all those concerned.

We would like to point out that although you enjoyed your stay with us (as briefly mentioned at the end of your posting), you only mentioned the negative in depth. We find this rather unfair.

With regards to the dining packages- the guests staying in the four star Hotel Fortina receive a full description leaflet upon arrival and the guests staying in the five star Fortina Spa Resort receive theirs. What the four star guests and the five star guests are entitled to as part of their dining packages is different and we do not understand why this would concern you. All guests are given their own entitlements upon arrival, depending on which hotel they are staying in. If everybody looks at what they are entitled to, there will be no confusion whatsoever.

With regards to timeshare personnel- we would like to point out that we have received very good comments regarding the staff and the comments we receive are far from them being pushy. We have passed on your comments to all those concerned.

Regards,
Hotel Fortina team

First impression of the hotel was the helpful reception staff who explained the Dine around the World menus and where we could eat - we booked straight away for Can Thai resturant (chinese) that evening. Second impression was when we arrived at our room - it was small, disappointing and looked drab. The bathroom could do with an update and the towels were pink and looked old (sad I know but I think hotels should always have crisp white towels for their guests), but when we looked out on the the balcony the view was magnificent. After looking around the room and checking the bed etc we agreed that it was very clean and not to ask for a change of room. We then decided to have a drink, found the garden pool and settled down at a table - only to be told that we couldn't use our cards there. Unfortunately the reception had told us about where we could eat but not where we could drink - we walked away a little red faced. We soon learnt to ask in different venues before ordering 'just in case' but felt it would have been easier on everyone if there had been some instructions, or even signs as you entered about whether you are in a 4* or a 5* area and what cards are accepted. Apart from that the hotel was fine and we enjoyed our week there. We loved the variety of the dining rooms we could use rather the having a buffet every night. We can recommend Can Thai (chinese) and Il Giardino - delicious food in both. We also used Ristorante Tigne (Italian), we only ate there once but decided the others had been better food. We ate at the Buffet breakfast every morning and on one evening - lovely choice food and pleasant waiters. Our only minor complaint would be about the bars - 4* guests cannot drink at the garden pool bar or the hotel bar in the 5*, this leaves the lido bar, the cocktail bar or the indoor bar in 4* hotel. We did not see the cocktail bar open at all during our week staying there, the indoor bar opened late each evening and this left the lido bar for pre dinner drinks - nice enough but not really suitable for drinks in your outfit while sunbathers/swimmers are still around the area. There was also a bar above the lido on the street level - we sat there one evening and told by the waiter that it did not belong to the hotel - very strange as we then saw other hotel guests sitting there - we assumed he meant that all drinks had to be paid for and not in the all inclusive package but it wasn't really clear.

The hotel also gave us a free boat trip, as they do with all guests, during their stay. We used this and can say that there was no con with it, and had the trip without any problems. It was a 90 minute trip and would recommend you use it - we enjoyed it. You just take your ticket to the ferry landing, hand it over and get on the boat along with everyone else who may be there. Maybe the negative comments are about the ladies that hand the ticket to you on the first morning - after they have gave you the ticket they then invite you to visit the 5* hotel to look around the hotel and sample the spa treatments, as we had heard that this can take 2/3 hours of your day we declined their offer. This was accepted with a smile and each morning after that we saw them, said good morning, and were not asked about it again. All in all it was a very good week in the hotel, and we found everyone helpful when we asked questions. We would return to this hotel, mainly because of the variety of the resturants and if we could guarantee a room looking over the front.

Dear daff85,

We would like to thank you for sharing your experience with us regarding your stay with us. We are disappointed to learn that you were not fully informed about the Bars. The Tropical Garden forms part of the five star Fortina Spa Resort. A full list and description of all the Bars and Restaurants that form part of the Hotel Fortina is available in each guest room in the Guest Information Booklet.

We are delighted to learn that you enjoyed your stay with us and enjoyed our Restaurants! We hope to see you again in the near future!

Warm wishes,

I am just back from staying in the 4 star. Lovely hotel, very clean and our room was very spacious. The location of the hotel is second to none. The major gripe I would have was the rudeness and unhelpfulness of the staff, the worse I have ever dealt with. The only exceptions were our housemaid, who was so friendly and cheerful each day and one of the waiting staff, a young girl. She was the only female in the buffet dining room each evening. All reception staff behaved totally unprofessionally. I dealt with five different members over the course of the week with various queries such as use of taxis, restaurants, luggage room, checking out and not one smiled, wished us a happy stay and or even asked had we enjoyed our stay. We got no useful information regarding the hotel or the surrounding area.

We had booked a sea view room at the cost of €38 each extra which was not available when we arrived. We were given an upgrade for a non sea view room instead. I requested a sea view as paid for and was told we had to wait until following day to see if one becomes available. As I was travelling with my elderly mother and to avoid unsettling her again, I decided not to take the matter any further. The sea view might have given us a better quality of sleep as the building work at the back of the hotel meant so sleep after 6.30am. Sunday was the only lie in we got!

I suggest the management send their key staff on training courses immediately for tuition on customer service skills and basic manners. It doesn’t cost anything to smile at someone and use please and thank you when dealing with a customer.

We stayed in a double room with a most fantastic view looking over to Valetta. However our stayed was marred with the inconsistency of the house keeping staff and poor maintenance. On a number of occassions we informed the front desk about the towels, The first day only one bath towel was supplied for two of us, this was repeated on a number of days over our 7 day stop. On the maintenance aspect we informed the desk of a wet patch on the ceiling of the showerroom. The tile was replaced, but find 2 days later the replaced tile colla[psed onto the floor. This situation was discovered on our return to the room in the evening. Maintenance attended and replaced the tile once more, stating they would return the next day to carry out repairs. We are unsure if the did return for although we reported the recurring damp patch the day prior to us leaving it appears nothing was done as the patch was larger on our departure. This information was passed on to the desk on daily basis.
Not what we would class as four star service.

Hi we stayed at this hotel with our family and were overall impressed by every part of the holiday; A bit pricey but you certainly get what you pay for the dine around option is fantastic. Only draw back was the parking we got 2 tickets outside of the hotel because it short stay only and they penalise you if you return so beware. The staff are great, food exceptional and area has plenty to offer; If you can afford that bit extra then give this hotel a try you wont regret it.

Dear ddees,

We would like to thank you for sharing your experience with us on this website. We are disappointed to learn that you received two parking tickets whilst parked outside the Hotel. Please be informed that there is a large car park 100m away from the entrance of the Hotel. This car park charges a maximum of €4.50 per day.

We hope to see you again in the future!

Warm wishes,
