This is a lovely 4* hotel but it just misses the mark somehow. It's the little things you expect in this sort of hotel. We were gretted with the words "You should have been here last night" even though our paperwork clearly showed our arrival date. We were going to go on the previous day but this had been altered several months ago. Little things like no hotel info book in the room and no tissues did not help. However it was a lovely room overlooking the gardens which were very pretty. We have been to Malta many times & the maltese people are lovely & friendly but not all the staff in this hotel. The buffet breakfast was OK but the food in the restaurants we tried was really good. The view from the Terrace restaurant was amazing & the meal equalled it. Taste restaurant was absolutely wonderful, not one complaint there. All in all a good hotel but just short of the mark.

Room Tip: If you want a spectacular view ask for the sea view it's across the bay from Valetta. If you want a lovely sized room choose a garden view room.

We booked this last minute, 1 week before, on the internet direct with Monarch/Cosmos and saved £600 on high street travel agents prices for a family of four. So glad we did as we had a fantastic time, with no problems at all. The hotel reception were expecting us check in was quick and easy, the reception staff were pleasant and helpful throughout our stay and at check out. The rooms were both air conditioned, sea view rooms on the second floor. They were well presented and clean, the telephone in the bathroom caused a few laughs every time it was accidentally knocked off and fell in the toilet - needless to say we didn't use that one! The pools and pool areas were great, the salt water sea front pool was the more lively, having a fantastic view of Valletta (as did our bedrooms) and the sun most of the day, the fresh water garden pool was more relaxed, quiet and shaded so take your pick. We never had a problem getting a sunbed even mid-morning so no need to rush out with your towels at 6am! Despite other reviews we found the hotel restaurants excellent and booking the day before completely effortless, in fact the only problem was deciding which restaurant to eat in the following day, we loved the Japanese and Chinese restaurants, the Indian was great and something to suit everyone in the buffet. Breakfast was the usual hotel buffet type but of a high standard and with plenty of choice. There was work being carried out to renovate some rooms and a lift was out of order as a result, but we weren't bothered by any noise or inconvenienced in any way. The resort itself was friendly and relaxed, with lots of shops, bars, restaurants etc. and we had great weather with blue skies and temperatures in the mid to high 30s all week. Don't be put off by comments about Aldo trying to flog you a time share (you get that everywhere) he's a nice guy and not too pushy, just take the free harbour cruise tickets (it's a good trip worth €16 each) and say no thanks to the time share talk and he'll leave you alone other than to say hello. There was a really nice mix of all ages and nationalities of hotel guests while we were there, young couples, families and more mature visitors. No organised kids activities but our kids are teenagers so not a problem. There's a cheap regular small ferry across to Valletta, which is well worth a visit while you are in Malta. We did a speedboat trip to Comino and the Blue Lagoon, beautiful clear water but crowded beach so get there early.
Many hotels in Malta claim to be four star but really aren't up to scratch, I'm glad to say that the Fortina isn't one of them and would recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: Book a sea view with air con

Been staying at many different hotels in Malta. The first thing you learn is that the number of stars rearly reflects the real standard of the hotels there. Many of them where probably nice 20 years ago when they got those stars, but after that little is done and many of them look a bit tumble-down. With that said, this is probably one of the best hotels I stayed in while in Malta. A bit of that might be because we got a free room upgrade, to a large and nice room. The food was one of the best hotel breakfasts I had in Malta. And several pools on both sides of the building makes it a good place if you just want to relax in the sun. It's not on the main tourist road (takes a bit of time to go to St Julians), if that's good or bad depends on you, we enjoyed it though.

Room Tip: Choose one with balcony... either you get a good look over the bay towards Valetta, or you get a view over to pool and palms behind the hotel Both are nice tough.

This is our second visit to the Fortina, the first being 13 years ago. Sadly not as good as our first visit.
On arrival, we were given room 821. This should have been a delux garden view room, which it was far from! The room was gruby, dirty, stained carpet and an awful smell of food. I opened up the sliding door and the bathroom window to let in some air, and the bathroom window opened up on to, well i'm not sure really... a vent/shaft/wall. This i presume is where the smell of food was coming straight up from the kitchen. After making a trip down to reception to ask to be moved, we were told by a chap to come back after 10am. We called in to reception after breakfast and a very helpful young lady gave us a key to take a look at a room on the 4th floor, which we did. When we went in it was a lovely, bright and airy room, with a good view over the pool and it was spotless, it had a safe, fridge, tea and coffee making facilities and a very good hairdryer. We moved straight away and the holiday began!
The food was plentiful and lovely with lots of choice, so nobody should have gone hungry.
The staff are a credit; they are helpful, friendly and poilte, and housekeeping do a sterling job. But i must agree with NUFC16 about the chap that appears from nowhere in reception, he is a complete pest! If he's not lurking in reception, he's stalking outside the breakfast room pestering you to go on a tour of the 5* at 9.30!! We had it down to a fine art of avoiding him by the end of our holiday... it turned out to be quite a sport!
The saltwater pool at the front of the hotel is very salty, so if you can, do wear goggles as the salt plays havoc with the eyes.
The pool does get quite busy at times, as we were told that non-residents can buy a day pass to use the facilities which is a bit sad really, as i think there would have been a lot more room on the days we were there. I understand though, the Gaden pool is for residents only. Its much quieter and more shady out there.
The pool bars do on occassions play music quite loudly,

Bus travel is very cheap and you can go anywhere. Be careful, you do end up like sardines and despite being full, they seem hell bent of letting more and more people on. Leave plenty of time to get off the bus as they don't seem to hang around at the stops for very long, and hold on tight.... some of the journeys end up like white knuckle rides at theme parks.

If you have time, do go on the complimentary Captain Morgan harbour tour, it's very interesting and you catch the boat about 5 minutes away from the hotel.

Thanks to Christ from Thomas Cook for his excellent tips and advice.

Lastly, don't drink the water. There is a supermarket in the new shopping centre which is a 5 minute walk away. Its on the lower ground floor and you can buy 6 2ltr bottles of water for just over 3 euros.

Room Tip: Avoid 821 at all costs. Garden view room are much bigger than the sea view rooms.

Having the good fortune to stay in the Fortina Hotel, I also had the misfortune to require emergency treatment at the Mater Dei hospital. I only mention this to reassure fellow holidaymakers of the first class treatment & caring staff I encountered at both.
The hotel occupies a stunning view of Valletta. Google Fortina webcam for live webcam view!
Rooms are located looking out over Valletta or the pool & garden complex to the rear. I understand the rooms to the rear are the larger. Ours (rear - 620) was expansive with double queen beds & huge bathroom. Air con, fridge, safe & coffee making facilities are provided at no extra cost.
Hotel staff were all very pleasant & friendly & in light of our hospital visit I want to say a special thank you to the girls on reception who could not have done more to help. I also want to thank Aldo specifically, who you will no doubt meet on your way to breakfast each morning, & who is only doing his job. He made sure we wanted for nothing & enquired with kindness & absolute sincerity each morning as to how we were & did we require him to do anything on our behalf to help us out. Also Alison (Thomson rep) for phoning round to ensure we obtained the necessary certification in order to fly home with the minimum of fuss.
From both of us, a sincere & grateful thank you to each & every one of you for your invaluable help & assistance in ensuring we had a holiday to remember for all the right reasons.
The facility to dine at any of 6 restaurants located in the hotel complex proved ideal, offering a good choice of styles. Menu choice is limited to table d'hote but it's pretty reasonable & there's always the opportunity to expand selection to the entire menu at extra cost.
Our package gave us a free harbor tour by boat (90 mins) which we found enjoyable. Further excursions by boat are available along Sliema waterfront only 10 to15 mins stroll from the hotel. As is the ferry service to Valletta (€2 return). It's worth mentioning there is a minibus at the ferry landing in Valletta which will take you up into the town saving you the walk uphill ( (€1).
The Arriva bus service in Malta is superb, goes practically all over the island with regular services & for €2.80 for a day ticket enabling you to get on & off as you wish up to 10pm it could hardly be cheaper.
The people of Malta we had the good fortune to come across happened to be friendly, helpful & so proud of their island that they proved the most informative source of information on our travels, willing & able to give advice on where to go, what to see & look out for.
Recommend to see & visit...Valletta, Mdina & Rabat (all so beautiful), Gozo (& its capital Victoria), possibly Marsaxlokk.
