“excellent, but the breakfast...”
Reviewed 26 October 2013

Spectacular position, 50 steps away form Tigne Point, THE place for shopping in Malta. With a view of La Valletta and walk away form ferries and all amenities it definitely has the best location you can desire. But the breakfast is absolutely not good. I mean the european one, like coffee was awful and croissant (just one kind of) was just butter, the jams again not having quality you expect in such a hotel. I told it to the maitre but they seem not to have an alternative. I do really suggest they increase quality of breakfast cause it would have a small impact in cost, but high in perceived value by the clients.

Room Tip: The sew view are obviously better but them cost very much more! I suggest the "garden view"...

Firstly, the location of this hotel is fantastic as it sits right opposite Sliema's beautiful promenade, that looks over to Valletta, and is meters from 'The Point' and it's shopping centre, many shops and restaurants and various places to pick up a boat/bus for a bit of site seeing.

Rooms:
Upon arrival my family and I were told that we had been given an upgrade to a suite room, meaning 4 of us had to share a room whilst the 5th member of our group remained in a standard sea room. Although at first my partner and I were slightly peeved that we were being forced to share a room with my parents, all 4 of us were very very pleased with our suite on the 6th floor. The room had 2 bedrooms (one with a double bed and the other with two singles pushed together), 2 bathrooms (one with a shower unit and the other with a bath/shower) and a television/seating area; the television had a good variety of English channels and the kettle in the room was very handy for making tea and coffee. Unlike what a lot of others have said, the tea and coffee was replenished everyday and our room was cleaned to a very good standard. Our only minor complaints with the room is the fact that bathrooms are a little on the small side and we didn't have a balcony. However, the 3 huge windows looking out onto Valletta definitely made up for this! We had a little nose at the standard sea room too. Although the bathroom was very small, the room was more than adequate and looked to be nice and clean.

Food:

Overall the food was pretty good. We went half board and chose to have breakfast and dinner included in our package. The breakfast was okay. The hot food was tasty, but the same everyday, there was a very limited choice in terms of fruit and cereal and the fruit juices were from a machine and were either very very watery or hideously strong! Dinner, however, was better. The Thai and Chinese restaurant was our favourite in terms of food, yet the service was very slow. The service at the Italian restaurant and the hotel buffet was better, yet the food wasn't quite as good. We did want to try the food at the Indian restaurant but it was fully booked for 2 days; you have to book to dine at the hotel restaurants at reception otherwise you have to eat at the hotel buffet. Unfortunately we weren't there long enough to sample the food at the Japanese restaurant.

Pool/Gym Area:

The outside pool area and The Terrace bar was very nice. The inside pool/hot tub was disappointing though. Both were absolutely freezing; clearly the hot tub was not working! The gym, however, did have a good variety of equipment (although very old!) with great music playing.

Other:

Not that this is a complaint necessarily but the hotel seems to attract A LOT of old people. So when dining at breakfast it looked as if we had walked into an old people's home...as was the case when we walked past the SAGA room where they were all watching black and white films with a free cuppa.

The fact that the wifi in the hotel was so poor was a bit annoying, but it did stop us from being unsocialable on our phones! There was free wifi in most restaurants, cafe's and shopping centers though which was handy for having a quick check of facebook.

Our only major complaint with this hotel is this whole time share business. When going down to breakfast on our first morning we were greeted by a very friendly man who said he wished to talked to us after we've had our breakfast about some free boat trip tickets. Having already read about this in other reviews of this hotel, we attempted to avoid this conversation but were unsuccessful. For 10 minutes this guy tried to persuade us to go on this bloody boat trip no matter how many times we said we didn't want to. So beware of this; he doesn't take no for an answer!! ..funnily enough he wasn't quite so friendly when we went down to breakfast on other days!

To be quite honest, the title of this review should be "expected much better", but when averaging out the good and bad of the hotel, I need to take my own expectations (which are insanely high) out of it, and go with the general population.

I will start right at the beginning.

Me and my boyfriend booked this hotel for 1.5 weeks and paid approx 700euro (i do not remember the exact price). For a Sliema hotel, which is a sea front hotel, and with parking possibilities and breakfast included, this is quite a good price. If you go just a bit further down the seafront though, you can find much cheaper hotels, which i also have stayed at, which are better in my opinion.

I came to this hotel upon recommendation of a tourist guide who pointed out that this was a very popular hotel, and therefore, should be a good one. No fault of the tour guide, after all, she has no access to the rooms or services.

We happen to be internet geeks, so internet was a huge priority for us to have in our room. However, when we asked for it, it was extremely expensive to have it available in our room and the receptionist did not want to sell us more than 3 "tickets" for the wifi (one per electronic item, and expires in 24 hours) because she might have other people that want, and she didn´t have enough for us all - totally unacceptable in my opinion. If your customers ask for wifi and are willing to pay, give them wifi!

Second horrible experience, were the lifts. If you are a little bit claustrophobic, or really don´t like lifts, like myself, kindly switch to a different hotel now. I had a heart attack every day using those lifts, and with our floor being the 9th one, climbing up the stairs was not really an option. One of the lifts was so tiny, and me and my boyfriend barely fit in together (let alone with a backpack or luggage) and the other one felt so unstable and shaky it was very unnerving!

The room was quite ok - the best thing out of the experience. The bed was not too hard, not too soft, the shower worked well and was clean, and we have a massive window overlooking the sea.

Breakfast was... boring... and busy. If you got up at 7am and went down to breakfast right away, it was fine (we are early risers on holiday, so we got lucky to find a place to eat), but one time we went to breakfast late (8:30am) and it was IMPOSSIBLE to get a seat. And it was a very big area. They had most kinds of breakfast foods, fry ups, cereals, yoghurts and that sort of thing, but the fry ups were tasteless, and if you ask for ketchup or mayonnaise, you might as well forget it, it takes so long to come out. I love maltese bread, and they had it on offer for breakfast, along with more common breads, however it was very hard and chewy - clearly it was from dinner the night before (everyday it was the same story).

On our last night, we got a comp as we had arrived one day later due to airline troubles, and were offered to switch hotels with next door, the far more luxurious sister hotel Fortina Spa Resort. Now that, was beautiful. But you will find out more about that on their review page!

All in all, i wouldn´t go back to this hotel if they paid my entire stay. If you have taste buds, or don´t like dodgy lifts, I recommend you don´t stay here either!

Excellent 4 star hotel. Best rooms are the superior sea view rooms which have a wonderful view across the harbour towards Valetta. At least five restaurants so half board is an advantage. Japanese, chinese, Indian, meditteranean and a buffet restaurant. All good quality. Very pleasant garden areas to the rear. Four indoor and outdoor swimming pools so plenty of choice. We had an excellent holiday and would certainly go back.

Ups and downs with this hotel. Spacious superior room with lots of storage, air con and fridge. Miniscule balcony (some are bigger). 2 chairs and small table but if you unstacked them you couldn't open the door. The room was quite gloomy as the single glazed door to the balcony didn't let in much light. Some rooms had double doors but unless you know which room to request it's bit of a lottery. The bathroom was tiny and claustrophobic although water was hot and good shower pressure. There were tea/coffee making facilities but supplies were not always replenished. The room was clean and towels were replaced each day even though we did put them on the rails. My biggest complaint was the disgusting state of the toilet brush which obviously wasn't checked.
We were on a half board basis and you could have lunch or dinner. The main restaurant was pleasant and you could choose from other restaurants on site but had to book 48 hours in advance. As we were in the 4 star hotel, the other restaurants were on a table d'hote basis but you could have a la carte at a supplement. We stuck to the buffet restaurant as we were very happy with the food on offer. For dinner there were several meat choices, fish and 2 vegetarian options. As a vegetarian, I was extremely pleased with the options. Starters were fairly limited and a reasonable choice of desserts. Wine was reasonably priced There could be a wait to order wine when the restaurant was busy. Breakfast was very good,
The pools were lovely although we were there for sightseeing and didn't use the pool areas. There were also lovely gardens overlooked by rooms at the rear of the hotel.
You will be offered a free harbour cruise to listen to a sales pitch for the Spa Resort which is part of a holiday club. But if you take a Malta Sightseeing open top bus tour you will get a free harbour cruise anyway. The bus tours are very good as long as the commentary is working on your bus. These are hop on/hop off so a good way to see the island. Local buses are a short walk away but can be very busy to Valletta. We preferred the ferry which is much quicker. If the walk up the hill on the other side is too steep, there are mini buses for 1 euro.
This was our first visit to Malta and it is a fascinating island. We would definitely go again. On touring the island, we visited the various bays with lots of tourist hotels and typical tourist shops. However, we preferred Sliema as a base. You could not beat the views, good transport and plenty of shops, restaurants and bars. There is also a smart new shopping mall at Tigne Point.
I don't think I would return to the Fortina 4* but would perhaps try the Fortina Spa Hotel. We found all the staff helpful and pleasant as were all the people we met in Malta. I'm sure we will return.

Room Tip: A sea view room with a view across to Valletta. Higher floors have less traffic noise. Some rooms ha...

A good hotel that just needs a bit more upgrading in some areas, public areas very good, but bedrooms very mixed, first room we were given was on first floor to the front needed upgrading and far too near the main road and traffic so moved to 3rd floor on second night, small room, small shower room and small balcony but all adequate and it wasn't a problem for us, other family members moved to 6th floor and although no balcony their room was huge and newly upgraded, with both bath and shower. We found the staff all friendly and helpful and the food in the dining room was a good varied selection and on the whole good quality. Hotel in good location with wonderful views, entertainment leaves a lot to be desired but bar wasn't generally busy anyway, although one real gripe we had was several large T.V. screens with football on or music that left a lot to be desired especially taking into account the age group in the hotel.

Room Tip: Don't take a room on first floor, everyone seems to be put into one of these rooms on their firs...
