Reviewed 15 November 2013

"After reading some previous reviews was a little unsure what to expect but was pleasantly suprised overall. We had a room on the 5th floor overlooking the harbour to Valetta and so did not experience any traffic noise. The room was large and comfortable but the balcony was a little small - just enough room for 2 chairs and a small table but thats all we really needed. Balconies and rooms do vary in size as we spoke to some people with a huge balcony but a tiny room, so my advice would be to swap rooms if you are not happy with your initial allocation. Cleaning was great as they chnaged towels and sheets every day. We ate in the buffet restaurant most nights which served really good food - different hot and cold choices every night including various vegetarian options. The restaurant overlooks the pool and over to Valetta and was furnished to a good modern standard. The same restaurant does great breakfasts again with plenty of choice. My only gripe would be sometimes the Corn Flakes were the budget variety and tatsed like cardboard, whilst the next day they would be the proper thing! The cold milk machine did break down one morning but the staff had it fixed within about 10 minutes. We did eat at some of the other restaurants in the complex but some have set menus and so choices were more limited. There is a chap offering free harbour cruises outside the buffet restaurant trying to sign you up to look round the 5* complex next door. We took the free harbour cruise but declined the offer of the tour round the 5* complex. The free harbour cruise was very enjoyable but everyone in Sliema seems to be giving them away free! Some reception staff were very helpful whilst on other days different staff werent quite as forthcoming so perhaps a little more consistency would be good. Would return to this Hotel if I ever go back to Sliema as the location was great and offered great

Room Tip: If you are visiting Malta,it is worth it to go for a lunch or dinner.

We have just returned from a three week stay at the above Hotel. the Fortina is ideally situated for exploring all the History and Archaeology of Malta. We would rate it as three star but still excellent value for money.Marvellous pool area at sea level with sea water pool and sunbeds. A little tried but adequate nevertheless. If you are visiting Malta for a relaxing break by the sea this Hotel will work for you. If, as we were, you are visiting to soak up the culture it also works well. Maltese bus travel is cheap and the buses are frequent. The open top sightseeeing buses also offer good value for money. The ferry from Siliema to Valletta gives good access to all of Valletta's many attractions. Must sees are as follows, St John's Co-Cathedral Valletta for it's wonderful interior and the two Carravagio's, the temples at Hagar Qim/ Mandejra, the Hypogeum (advance tickets needed for this) the War Museum, the Grand Harbour, and many more.Wonderful island.

Room Tip: Larger rooms overlook the tropical garden at the rear of the hotel. Seaview rooms are smaller but of...

An excellent, good value hotel . Friendly and helpful staff . The view from tour sea view rooms over Valletta was amazing . although the room was small it was well services and very clean . We stayed half board and enjoyed eating in the various restaurants on offer . Excellent gym and use of spa facilities .

Room Tip: Seaview rooms (floor 5 ) have amazing views from balcony despite being cheapest on offer .

Stayed at the Fortina Oct 2013 with mainly favourable comments.

THE GOOD - Staff at the hotel were friendly and helpful. Public areas clean, smart and comfortable. Garden area with pool at the rear of the hotel very peaceful but cool in the afternoon due to the shade. At night the palm trees are illuminated and the entire area is really pretty. There are restaurants surrounding garden area/pool which we were able to use within our half board basis - we needed to pre book in advance and dine from the set menu but this was not problem as there was plenty to pick from. We used the Thai and Mediterranean restaurants both of which served delicious food and also the Valletta buffet style restaurant every morning for breakfast and several times for our evening meal. Whilst the breakfast fayre was repetitive we always found adequate choice and quality - the evening meals were more varied. There is another outdoor pool by the side of the harbour which was in a sunnier position than the garden pool hence it was usually warmer and there was never any shortage of loungers. The hotel operate a system where you can borrow a pool towel for free and there is no charge for sun loungers/umbrellas either. There is an indoor pool/gym but I did not use this facility. There is a spa offering all manner of treatments at an additional charge although, I did have a free 2 hour pass for the spa which was a tranquil haven with a fab jacuzzi, steam and saunas. Our room overlooked the harbour with stunning view of Valletta and despite being on the front adjacent to the main road there was no traffic noise to speak of so we did not find this a negative. The room was minimally furnished but very adequate storage space for our clothes etc and the room was extremely clean with great maid service. The bed was huge and very comfortable affording a good night's sleep. The bathroom was OK - a bit small but plenty of hot water and towels changed daily. The hotel is in a great location with some bars, cafes and small local shops nearby plus a new shopping centre with high street type shops and a decent supermarket next door so very handy. Ferries across the harbour to Valletta and boats for island cruises leave just a 5/10 min walk away from the hotel plus lots of local buses and the 'hop on hop off' buses too.

THE BAD - The niggles included a very small balcony in room 411 - so small I was reluctant to go onto it as it was scarily tiny and I have to admit to not feeling very safe on it - only really space for one person at a time on the balcony cos of the location of the door opening out onto one of the chairs. Air con, whilst adequate, was very noisy, so much so that we could not have it on at night or would have been kept awake all night. It wasnt too hot in October at night but I could see this would be a prob earlier in the season.

THE UGLY - The above negatives paled into insignificance in comparison to the irrating time share sales at breakfast time - the story goes that you go on a guided tour of the five star spa hotel next door and also learn about the 'leisure club' but this leisure club is not a gym or a pool or a spa - it is what most people would describe as a holiday club/timeshare arrangement and a lengthy presentation follows with no guided tour of the five star hotel whatsoever - after over an hour of small talk and asking how much all of this would cost but not getting an answer, I terminated the 'presentation' as we did not come on holiday to sit about in some 12th floor office suite - they are just doing the job which they are paid to do and are perfectly pleasant people however, the fact that the Fortina allows it's guests to be used in this way and obviously promotes this type of thing is a BIG black mark against the hotel and I find it very distasteful. The free 90 min harbour cruise which the hotel offers is however worth having and there are 'no strings' attached, though you can get the same cruise free if you book to on the 'hop on hop off' buses.

OVERALL my stay at the Fortina was a good experience and I would use the hotel again but of course would give the time share bandits a wide berth.

Room Tip: Rooms on the front have a stunning view but those room numbers ending in '11' ie 411, 311 et...

I travelled here with my family and had the most amazing time. The staff were very friendly and made us feel so welcome. They couldn't do enough to make our stay more pleasant. The resort itself is lovely and very clean and offer a wide range of food with great restaurant. The view from our room was gorgeous and very romantic at night. There is loads to do in the area and you are only a small walk away from shops. Weather was also amazing. All in all it's an A* resort with everything you need : )

Room Tip: Sea view rooms have a wonderful view, especially at night.

When I write a review I always like to get straight to the point so that other holiday makers get a feel of what is in store prior to spending their well earned income on a well deserved holiday.
The hotel certainly offers a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere.
The staff in the hotel from maids to reception will see to your requests in an exemplary manner.
The rooms-I can only comment on a deluxe room and a superior room they are very good. The deluxe room is very spacious with a twin balcony and of course the very important coffee and tea making facility.
The superior room is not as spacious as the deluxe room, but very nice indeed.
The food is plentiful - breakfast and evening meals are excellent and the staff are very well mannered and very helpful.(talk to them they are not robots) They love you to have a chat...
The location is excellent.

There are three points I would like to mention to the management:
1. A bottle of water to be placed in the room prior to guests arriving, if one arrives late evening or at night the ability to make a cup of tea or coffee would be nice.
2.Being hustled by someone trying to promote The Fortina Hotel Spa just before breakfast on the first day was very off-putting and annoying.
3. Renewing the seating in the deluxe rooms would be welcome, they have had their day...

Hope you all find this helpful

Room Tip: Deluxe room sea view excellent-1st floor
