We were upgraded to sea view room 410, a disgrace,2 single beds in single room . Corner window door to small balcony. Bathroom towel rail over toilet ! We complained, given 514 better not great. Window door to small balcony, half room was dark. Wardrobe for a single person. Food reasonable but bland, staff helpful. Public rooms poor and dark. Lovely views, would go back if given a better room.

Room Tip: Ask for a superior room inspect before occupation

We were very pleased with the Fortina 4*, especially the sea view. We were booked on what Mercury call 'Dine Around' which gave options to eat in an Indian, Japanese, sea food, Italian and the buffet; but we were happy enough eating in the buffet all week. The food was a good standard and the menu was changed daily. We were also given a couple of spa options free but we didn't bother. We did, however, take advantage of the harbour tour (1.5 hrs) wich was thrown in.
Be careful though there are sales staff waiting to pounce to flog you membership of a 'Holiday Club'
Free WiFi is only available in the reception area and the restaurants which is very irritating to have to leave your room to read your email!

Room Tip: Forget the free upgrade to Garden View, ask for a sea view. The view over to Valetta is stunning.

This was our third visit to the Fortina Hotel, so our expectation was quite high. We were a little bit disappointed. We arrived on Thursday evening and checked in. We had booked a garden view room. We were allocated Room 101, and this is exactly where this room should be put. We got into the room to see a 2 level layout, with the bed being on the upper level, and the toilet and bathroom on the lower level. This was a bit worrying as had we needed the toilet during the night it could have been a bit hazardous in the dark. This was not the worst aspect of the room, as there was a definite smell of damp. We then thought about opening the window, but there was no point as the only thing we could see was dead trees and a concrete yard. This was not a garden view. I then went back to reception to complain about the smell. We were then allocated room 422, which is more of a Deluxe Garden View, so we thought this should be okay. Imagine our surprise when we put the key card into the door and opened it to find an elderly couple already sitting in there. This was also very embarrassing. We told the reception about this, so they allocated us another room 517. This was on the seafront overlooking the main road. it was avery large room with a couple of single beds and a double bed. We left our bags and went down to dinner. On our return we switched on the light just in time to see a large cockroach go behind the television. as we could not access behind to see if we could kill the roach I decided to go back to reception to seek another room. As we had already booked the 5 Star Resort next door for one night of our stay, I mentioned this to reception and the lady did look in the 5 Star resort and found us a room, but said we had to check with them the following day to see if we could stay in that same room. We then went around to the Resort and went up to our new allocated room, which was a fantastic Spa Room. We did check with reception the following day and luckily they allowed us to stay in the same room for the full length of our stay. A review of this hotel is contained in another review.

We did have a lot of problems with allocated rooms here, but I have to commend the reception staff at both the Fortina Hotel and Spa Resort for their professionalism and helpful nature which got us in to a suitable room.

Room Tip: Do not accept Room 101. If possible go for a Deluxe Garden Room as the views are amazing over the ga...

We were last at the Fortina 4* six years ago and decided to try it again after a number of holidays on the Algarve. Had a deluxe garden view room as requested which was great - 2 weeks on HB and a third week on B & B. We think the food in the main restaurant has gone up a notch, both at breakfast and in the evening. Yes - it is a bit 'canteen like' but it suited us fine. We tried he 'dine around' options and liked them all bar the Indian for lunch which was absolutely dire so we complained.
We prefer to eat before 1830 hrs so our third week allowed us to sample other resturants in Sliema, Valetta and elsewhere.
Malta was cleaner, buzzier and better than six years ago. The Maltese economy is doing pretty well and that was reflected in the use of bars and resturants by the locals.
Mercury Direct were great - our first time with them (and easyJet).
Would we go back - not sure - the Algarve is far cheaper for food and drink and we probably prefer self catering which is better served in Portugal than Malta in our view.

Room Tip: The garden rooms are quieter and bigger but do not have a sea view

Plus points: location on the harbour in Silema, with great views of the Valetta skyline.
Next to bus stops, trip boats and the 2 € ferry to Valetta.
Various room, worth updating to get larger and more modern rooms either with a sea or garden facing rooms.
Food good and plentiful. Large Buffet/ breakfast room under the road beside the pools and water views.
Special " Dine Around the World" system of international restaurants that can be booked as part of the HB.
Several pools, indoor and outside, gym and use of the 5 star spa next door.
Wifi free and available only in the reception and Valette buffet dining and bar.
Minus points: some bedrooms need refurbishing and are small.
Indoor pool has rusty equipment, mouldy walls and unclean surfaces.
Varied standards of service in the international restaurants and they have to be booked 2 days in advance at reception.
Lack of comfortable sitting areas. Reception area draughty with front door opening, downstairs bar frequent t. v. football.
Need for more evening entertainment, only various musicians thurs to Sunday.

Very good 90 minute harbour cruises are recommended but try to avoid the line of companies along the waterfront at Silema selling their various trips.
Excellent frequent, extensive and cheap local buses but beware of the trip mini buses itch poor suspension of the poorly tarmaced and pot holed roads.

We stayed here for ten days in February, the hotel is very clean and we were lucky to get a refurbished room, it was a little small compared to our friends room but it was adequate for our needs. Our maid Dani was lovely and kept our room spotless. We had a room overlooking the road and the harbour with views of Valetta, the road noise did not disturb us and the view more than made up for it.
The food was fine with plenty of variety if a little bland not helped by the fact you could not get salt out of the salt pots, also there was very little fresh fruit available. We dined around at most of the restaurants and found the food good but booking was a lottery we booked through reception and on two occasions we found that the table had not been booked despite us watching them do it on the computer. On the whole we enjoyed our stay at this hotel and would consider going back, the transport links are great as the buses pass the hotel very frequently making it easy to get around and there is a ferry service to Valetta which runs regularly.

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room overlooking the harbour.

The hotel describes itself as 4 star,which the public rooms probably justify but the bedroom allocated to us was more like 2 star. Location and views generally excellent but not from our room!. Should have been upgraded to a superior garden view room but wasn't, our fault for not pushing.We were conned into a tour of the facilities by someone we assumed was a Mercury rep, but who turned out to be a timeshare salesman. We had to be very persistent to avoid a 'minimum one hour' presentation. Hope that Mercury do not condone this. The dine around concept was good, the in house dining facility produced good food with a wide choice but the ambience was rather canteenish. All the eating places obviously wanted to make money selling overpriced drinks,requests for tap water were refused, and cash demanded. We were refused the facility of charging to the room but without explanation.

Room Tip: DEMAND an Upgrade! especially garden view rooms

Thank you for your posting. We are disappointed to learn of some of your comments in your review. Kindly be advised that guests can just collect their complimentary Harbour Cruise tickets without the need to view the Fortina Spa Resort.

We would like to inform you that it is not advisable to consume tap water in Malta and that is why we do not offer the option of tap water in any of our bars and restaurants.

Kindly also be advised that, as with hotels all around the world, guests are able to put extras on their room bills when credit card details are provided upon check-in. This facility is available to those who wish to provide the hotel with their credit card details as explain upon check-in.
