The best thing about the Fortina is the view of Valetta. After that I'm afraid it's all downhill. The rooms facing Valetta are dreary green and brown with iffy plumbing, particularly the WC. The 'dine around' option is much advertised but the hotel goes out of its way to stop half-board clients from using it. All the advertised restaurants are 'fully booked' days in advance. When you walk past them they are a sea of empty tables. Not amused. The Spa pool is overheated, dripping with condensation and we are pretty sure my wife picked up an infection there. The hotel overcharges for bottled water, 4 euros, when the restaurants in Valetta charge 2.30. The bar next to the outdoor pool serves its drinks in plastic glasses! 4 star? Not a chance. There is Wi-Fi in some public areas but nowhere else - not in the rooms. There is a busy road outside with constant traffic. Good points? The garden in the central atrium is attractive and child-free, or is supposed to be. The food in the Terrace restaurant over the road but attached to the hotel is good. The main restaurant is typical dull package holiday fare. Go back? Not a chance.

Room Tip: The rooms facing the garden and quiet and probably a better bet than the ones on the sea side which have the view of Valetta but also overlook the road.

Excellent position with a sea view room opposite Valetta.Staff were very helpful as was the Mercury rep.
The Dine Around offered a wide variety for all taste and on the whole was very good.

Downside, the sound proofing was very poor, could hear people using some of the other bathrooms. The bed was not the most comfortable.

Enjoyed my two weeks in Malta and hope to return.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms get the sun all day and can get very warm, but in the evening to sit on your balcony(small) and watch the world go by is good. 4th floor traffic noise not too bad.

We stayed in mid May, travelling with friends and booked through Thomas Cook and flying from Norwich for convenience. Generally all was good but the flight time was late in the evening meaning we didn't get to the hotel until 01:00 and losing the best part of the first day away but that is nobody's fault, just unfortunate.

There seem to be mixed reviews about this hotel but overall our party was very satisfied with our choice.

Location
The hotel is right on the waterfront at Sliema and very convenient for the water taxi to Valletta, boat trips, local shops, a modern shopping centre, buses and a relatively short walk takes you towards the headland and through to Sliema seafront. An excellent location for wherever you want to go to.

Room
I feel we were fortunate to have rooms on the fifth floor overlooking the harbour and across to Valletta. The view never failed to captivate me whatever time of the day. Whilst it can be noisy from traffic with the door open it was in my opinion better than looking at the garden and I would opt for this every time.
It is fair to say that the room was quite compact but it was really just a base and we spent lots of time out so were really not bothered.
The sliding door did have a large crack in the glass and the bathroom felt a little tired but it was clean and well serviced every day.
We were overwhelmed with storage space and had no problem fitting everything in.
I do think the chipboard bed bases could be improved on in a 4* hotel.
I was so pleased that the safe is free. There was a problem with the lock but obvious to me and the reception staff that it was the battery and this was swiftly resolved on the same day.
There was no guest information in the room whatsoever and it would have been useful to help find where bars and facilities are located.

Food
The Valette buffet restaurant was fine with plenty of food both at breakfast and dinner. It does as has previously noted seem to cater for British tastes and it would be far nicer to have a more Mediterranean inspired menu than a daily a roast. The Maltese themed night was excellent. It may have been the time we stayed and the clientele but the "buffet bundle" at 18:30 is something to avoid. There is a wine list with some nice choices but it seemed impossible to purchase by the glass in the restaurants. I don't quite get the two shifts for dinner; it would make sense just to be continuously open as the staff are constantly clearing and relaying tables anyway.
We tried the dine around in Table 1 and the Italian and were very pleased with the food and service. Only being able to book two days ahead is a pain.

Bars
We used the Cocktail Bar, the Lido Bar and the Limes. All were good with a wide range of drinks although as noted the Cocktail Bar entertainment is a bit dated but seemed to suit the clientele. The pianist and guitarist in the Limes were excellent. On a warm evening the best place to sit is at the Lido Bar and just take in the view.

Pools
Due to busy sightseeing days we did not use the pools much. The outside pools have plenty of sun beds and the pools and terrace were clean and tidy.
We only found the inside pool towards the end of the stay and we found it a bit grubby.

WiFi
There is plenty of free wifi in reception, bars and around the pools. It wasn't in the rooms but apart from a few quick e-mail cards home I never felt the need for it as I like to escape for a week.

Staff
All staff were polite and attentive throughout the hotel. Excellent.

"Free Harbour Cruise and Treatment"
If this is genuinely free then the tickets / vouchers should just be available at reception. The overall suggestion is that this is linked to a tedious 1.5 hours of time share talk and whilst this might suit some we avoided it as have better things to do on a holiday.

So all in all a good holiday has been had. Yes there are things that could be improved on but ultimately all four of us enjoyed our stay and would we stay here again? Yes we would!

Room Tip: A balcony room at the front of the hotel overlooking Valletta provided you are prepared to tolerate some traffic noise when the door is open.

Had a lovely ten day holiday in the fortina 4 star hotel very varied choices in buffet restaurant did not feel need to try other restaurants on site as always so much choice and plenty of it but other guests tried dine around and praised this as well. Staff very helpful and friendly a all areas kept very clean sea view rooms smaller but views more than make up for this if you prefer bigger room go for garden view would definitely return to this hotel.

Room Tip: If traffic noise bothers you do not choose sea view although once patio door closed traffic noise was muffled views from sew view fantastic always something to watch on sea and road

perfect choice for a relaxing holiday. we stayed in a garden view suite. meals in la vallette were wonderful, the downside is the diet you need to go on when you get home. the a la carte restaurants were brilliant. would I return? Of course.
