“Great view of one harbour and Valletta”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 July 2014

Truly amazing view from the front facing rooms spoilt only by the road and the associated noise felt the need to leave door open because air con was rather old and noisy our particular room was a little dowdy the rooms need updating but for a week we thought we could handle it.
Staff are very good ,but was very disappointed with Aldo at the breakfast entrance trying to entice you into viewing the 5 star hotel which was an obvious con to get you into timeshare ,we didn't go to meeting ! .breakfasts menu not great no where near what you would expect for 4 star, needs more fresh fruit and proper juices , evening buffet meals much better .garden pool and island bar very nice, lido across the road for serious sun worship peers all part of the hotel.couldn't see what the 5 star hotel was getting over the 4 star other than probably better rooms and a more extensive menu in the dine around restaurants which are good Thai being the best by far ,didn't like the fact that as 4 star guests you had a much less extensive menu and fixed than the 5 star if you dined around. All in all very happy with the position of hotel with that stunning view from the front, would stay again but I will do my homework on the room size and fittings

First time visiting Malta and had the best time. Hotel was brilliant amazing location, staff were very good and helped with anything that was needed. Room was lovely and clean with a balcony view of Valetta which was out of this world. Bus and taxi boats were very handy and came in very useful throughout the holiday and also very cheap. Hotel was lovely and clean. No complaints at all except for some of the reasturants at the hotel the food wasn't great. Decided to eat out for the rest of the holiday and found some lovely local reasturants at reasonable prices. All in all a fantastic holiday and experience would definitely recommend and will be booking up to go back in the near future.

we stayed in this hotel on a half board basis. both breakfast and dinner were buffet style. and my, there were many abundant dishes of all kinds you can imagine. my favorite was the antipasto. desert also was a big thing. rooms were not exactly large but comfortable. we had a great view of Valletta from our balcony. lovely outdoor pool, although it was march we still sun bathed in the Mediterranean sunshine. the point shopping complex is 1 minute walk away. room was cleaned everyday. bus stop just opposite. great hotel!!!

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 June 2014 via mobile

We spent a week in Malta at the end of June 2014 on a SAGA half-board package, staying at the Fortina Hotel, on the Tigne waterfront in Sliema. Preferring quiet, we chose to have a garden room rather than one at the front of the hotel. Garden rooms are slightly larger, but of course you miss out on the spectacular view of Valletta from the front of the hotel. You pays your money…

The room was comfortable though very dark and inadequately lit: one table lamp on the dressing table, two small spotlights over the beds and the light in the lobby. That was it. With one wall painted dark grey and dark curtains reading was impossible. We did ask for a standard lamp (as provided in the suites) but did not get one. The bathroom was a little cramped but otherwise up to standard.

We ate most evenings at La Vallette restaurant buffet; we only bothered with the dine-around option once. La Valette is under the road, and looks out over the swimming pool and Marsamxett harbour to Valletta beyond. On the whole, the food is pretty good – except for the vegetables, which are horrible – and there's plenty of it. There are some local specialities; I especially enjoyed the rabbit. Breakfasts are good, though the juices taste reconstituted, and more fresh fruit would've been nice.

There are a couple of nice places for a drink. The Pool Bar overlooks the harbour and has a spectacular view of Valetta as the light fades and the floodlights come on, while the Island Bar in the middle of the garden has quiet guitar music on some evenings. Bar prices are reasonable, though bottled water is expensive — buy it from the supermarket in The Point shopping mall just around the corner.

Overall we enjoyed our stay, and would go there again, though next time I'll stick to the salad – and take my own Tilly lamp.

The hotel itself is quite nice - lovely outdoor pool, large rooms, great breakfast and very clean - but a few things let it down. It could do with a re-furb, some things are very tired looking - for example worn carpets and tatty bedspreads. The fitness centre was closed while we were there, but no one told us that before we arrived so we carried our gym kit all that way for no reason! The staff in the lido bar weren't at all friendly (verging on rude), and the prices at the lido bar are very high for some quite mediocre (and very small glasses) wines etc, so we didn't return after our one brief visit. I visit Sliema quite regularly, but I'm not sure I'd stay at the Fortina again considering the prices they charge.

Do not believe the pictures you see on the brochures, stayed there for a week & were glad to escape.
Where do I start,
ROOM SIZE & CONDITION - 3.5m x 3m ( 12ftx10ft) with en suite with 600mm door entry, but some not so bright person fitted a wash hand basin to close to the door narrowing it to 450mm (18") . Carpets badly stained, floor had the impression of a ploughed park with the carpet glued down into channels causing trip hazards, the furniture in the room was water damaged & splitting, the beds were soft "like trying to sleep on porridge" fell out of bed one night & on investigation found the 2 x 3ft divans were fitted with 4' 6" double bed mattress covers causing the bedding to move while you slept.
If you are going to this hotel for a rest make sure your room is on the highest floor & away from the elevators, we were unlucky enough to be on the first floor, a great view of Valletta, but also of the taxi rank who don't think anything about pulling out causing cars drivers to pump their horns at all hours.. By far the worse & constant noise was the elevators , there were 2 within 1200mm ( 4feet) of our room door, as the night began to quieten & you were hoping to nod off in your porridge bed, All you could hear was "DOORS CLOSING, GOING UP, or DOORS CLOSING GOING DOWN". To add to this the extractor fan in the toilet ran constantly then you had the necessity of the air condition unit to cool the room . All this noise in such a confined space is horrendous ... We ended up having to set up my i phone to play background music to blot out the other noises...

PROBLEMS ACCESSING THE ROOM- We arrived on 17/6/14 & were due to leave on the 24/6/14. On the 21st we returned to our room & the electronic key card would not open our door, we went to the reception where we were told that the incorrect date had been put on our card , they reprogrammed the card we returned to our room & got entry. The following day we returned to our room to pick up our pool gear after breakfast, again another trip to the reception where this time we were accused of bending the card & damaging it, I corrected the receptionist by telling her it was in my bank card wallet & all my cards still worked. again they reprogrammed the card & we got access. the following morning it happened again, this time when we went to the reception they asked us to return to the room & they would get maintenance up to look at it, 10minutes later the maintenance man arrived tried his master card in the lock to no avail , he had to use the old fashion key method to open the door, he confirmed there was a fault & would get it repaired.. We returned 5hours later "GUESS WHAT " you got it still no access to our room, it was a different receptionist who did not know the problems we were having & she made the mistake of thinking we had just arrived by telling us "you cannot get access to your room till 2.00pm".. My wife lost the plot at this point & demanded to see the manager, they again asked us to go to our room & wait for the manager to come up.. 25 minutes later nobody had arrived again we had to go to reception to ask what was happening & why we were being kept waiting , the receptionist got on the radio & told us the manager was on her way, we returned to the room to find the manager & a different maintenance person changing the batteries in the lock system then reprogramming it. , therefore we were lied to & accused of damaging their property due to their incompetence to change a battery..

THE PREMISES ARE NOT CHILD FRIENDLY - numerous 240v sockets are in dangerous condition where a young child could slip their fingers behind the wall sockets into live wiring.

THE PREMISES ARE NOT 100% SAFE FOR DISABLED EITHER-, in the even of a wheelchair requiring access, all areas are not available. One of the areas that highlights this is the Lido bar area ,access out to this area is not ramped it has 2 salt water pools & over 200 sunbeds. the areas around the pool are not wide enough to allow a wheelchair to get access to all areas, the ground is not line marked to keep areas clear for access, the edges of the pool are tapered on with uneven drainage covers. Any other resort I have been to with facilities like this there were showers close by the pool the wash off the chlorinated water , in this pool area if you are on the side where the bulk of the beds are you have to walk through the Lido bar to get to them, not the greatest thing to want to do when folk are sitting watching the world cup..

MAINTENANCE CURRENTLY IN PROGRESS - Do not go to this hotel in the near future & expect to get use of the extensive gym & keep fit facilities it boasts of, they are closed for 14 weeks till early August, the Sa Re Ga Ma restaurant was closed for refurbishment, toilet facilities were closed. The workmen carrying out the ongoing repairs were not customer friendly, a couple of examples of this are cement footprints all over the carpeted areas in the corridors ,it was also damaging the carpets causing trip hazards, the area at the Lido Bar was washed down & cleaned every evening only to have the same workmen dragging damaged building material to a skip outside the fence between 8am & 9am the area is paviored & uneven did they lift a brush & sweep the area when finished of course not ...If you get a splinter in your foot then stick in at salt water pool well i think you know the out come..

WHAT YOU ARE PROMISES YOU AVOID-- the first morning we went down for breakfast we were approached by a gentleman at the entry to the dining area , this troll gave us ticket for a trip round the harbour & a massage but then he threw in the curved ball promising us 20 euros in free drinks if we went next door to the 5star hotel at 9.30am we never went but a couple that were there at the time with us did, we met up with them later only to find that they had been hoodwinked into going into a time share sales meeting..
We did not use the cruise tickets he gave us for fear of having our ears burnt for 90 minutes with someone trying to sell us what we did not want..We paid through our holiday rep for what we wanted that way we new what we were getting..

The only 2 things that saved this holiday were the food & the weather

Room Tip: as high as possible from the road if you want the view over Valletta, make sure the lifts are at a d...

This is a difficult review because certain aspects of this hotel were very good. Having travelled extensively stopping mainly in four star hotels I like to think I have a good idea of the standards required. The room was a superior garden view. It was a good size and had a nice bathroom which was clean, however the towels had certainly seen better days being thin and straggly. The shoower head was partially blocked which made it seem as though you were standing in front of a hosepipe. Two reqests to have this sorted resulted in no action and had we not had a meeting with a member of the management team on another problem then I doubt anything would have been done. The room was carpeted and looked as though it needed a good clean with a large stain. Again this was pointed out to staff twice with no apparent attempt to clean up. There was NO info in the room as to hotel facilities telephone directory etc. The beds were poor, well used & creaking springs.
The most serious problem was coming back and finding the door to the room open & no housekeeping in sight. Complaint made but no comeback as to why & luckilly nothing was stolen. The buffet breakfast selection was good but the quality was not with leathery bacon etc. Most 4* hotels would have an egg staion too ensure freshly cooked eggs. There is a good pool area & garden with plenty of sunbeds & of course the Lido pool at the front. This is a resort hotel and whilst it may meet Maltas criteria it does not stand up as a 4* hotel.
