First impressions are good. We had a de-lux garden room which was generous in size but looking tired. One bed was so tired it had a sheet of chipboard under the mattress. When you look at the detail you see just how this hotel needs a lot of TLC. The restaurant on the lower ground floor where breakfast is served had recently been renovated but the standard of workmanship is not up to an acceptable level. Nor was the standard of cleanliness around the seating area.

This was once an impressive hotel. It could, with a bit more care and attention, be where it would like to be. It looks like all the money has been spent on the sister Fortina Spa hotel next door.

Room Tip: We were on the 8th floor overlooking the extensive gardens which were very good with plenty of shady...

We stayed for 14 days at the 4 Star Fortina towards the end of July 2014. We paid for a superior sea view facing Valletta and Harbour but unfortunately not all Harbour facing rooms have a balcony. For some unknown reason there are 2-3 rooms on each floor without a balcony. After complaining we were given a superior sea view with a balcony. The garden view rooms are nice but the view of Valletta/Harbour is stunning and well worth the room supplement .The safe in the room is free but the instructions for use are incomplete.
The Fortina 5 Star is an attachment of the 4 star and share 95% of the 4 star Hotel facilities. The garden pool (shared) is very nice and has a lot of shaded areas for those that prefer not to be in the full glare of the sun. The front pool (also shared) overlooking Valletta is not as “pretty” but more than makes up for it with its superb views of the harbour. Sunbeds and parasols were always available any time of the day.
The Valletta restaurant is the main restaurant for 4* guests but there is the option of dine around in 5 other restaurants. To do this you have to book in advance (but no more than 48hrs) .We managed to book our preferred restaurant for only 3 occasions out of 7 attempts. It seems that there is limited reservations available for 4* guests at these restaurants. The receptionist always claims that they are fully booked but in passing the restaurants they always seemed to have plenty of tables available. If you do fail to get a booking for the dine around restaurant then you still won’t be disappointed as the Valetta restaurant serves more than adequate food. The breakfast is one of the best I have ever had abroad- “proper bacon”.
As you go in for breakfast you will be confronted with your tickets for the Free harbour cruise. They use this opportunity to ask you if you want a personal tour of the Hotel. DON’T -THIS IS A TIME SHARE !! You will be taken through to the 5 star tower next door for at least 3 hrs (we were lucky –we escaped after 1 hr).
The receptionist were so unhelpful and seemed to give the impression that they would rather have been some ware else. There is hardly any info about the hotel or surrounding area available in the room .Trying to get info from some of the receptionist was like taking teeth out.
The receptionists could not even agree where and what days the entertainment was on.When we did eventually stumble across the entertainment it was very poor but having something is sometimes better than nothing as there is no entertainment at all in Sliema, the evenings are very quiet, even the shops are all shut for seven.
There is a handy bus stop 1-2 min walk across the road. The Sliema Ferry to Valletta is approx. 5 min walk away. The ferry crossing takes about 4mins for 1.50 euro or 2.80 euro return and runs approx. every 15 mins.
The Fortina is a superb location as a base to explore Malta.

Room Tip: Book a Harbour/sea view but stipulate one that also includes a balcony. Some floors have superior se...

We bought two tickets for a day by the pool from deal.com. As soon as we arrived we went to the Island bar to pay in full for the day. The first problem was that the person manning the counter didn't know how the deal worked and expected us to pay in full (when we had already paid 10% through the website)! After 15 mins of hassle his companion arrived and he knew how the deal worked and everything was fixed.

BUT... once we left the bar and went for our sunbeds, there weren't enough umbrellas (or rather umbrella bases) for all the sunbeds available. We went again to the bar and the same person tried his best not to help us. Eventually he did come and got us an umbrella base (while complaining that the base was heavy).

From then on our experience was ok especially the great food of the TASTE restaurant. Pity such a renowned hotel does not train its employees accordingly.

This is a good hotel and with a few improvements could be a very good hotel. Impressive views of Valetta from hotel. Wife and I travelled early August with 2 teenage children.

Airport transfers
Booked a private transfer before we went and the driver was waiting for us with a sign with our name on when we landed and picked us up on time for our return flight. Company was Supreme Travel but they do try and insist that you attend their "welcome meeting" to ensure your time for pick up is confirmed, didn't go as it's a sales pitch for trips. Hotel reception confirmed our return pick up time by telephone so not a problem. Takes about 20mins from hotel to airport.

Rooms
We booked a deluxe double garden room and requested a high floor and got one, they put us on the 8th floor - the highest floor in the 4 star hotel ( 5 star next door goes higher). Room was very spacious and had two queen beds, although mattresses were very soft but this didn't prove to be a problem. Air conditioning unit is quite noisy but again it didn't stop us getting to sleep or indeed wake us up. The wardrobe space is limited and didn't accommodate all four of us but again this was more of a minor inconvenience than anything else.Room had a safety deposit box which worked perfectly well. Downside of the room was that the hot water supply from the shower was very erratic between around 18:00-20:00hrs. Sometimes okay but sometimes none at all, i'm assuming this was down to excess demand at the time. The taps on the bath are fitted with a shower spray attachment which we had to use when no hot water from the shower - this worked but not very powerful but we managed on the occassions we used it. Never had a problem with the shower on a morning. Maid service daily and generally okay except a couple of times didn't leave enough towels so had to ask reception to send additional towels up - which they did promptly.

Food and drink
We were only B&B so only had breakfast but no complaints. Good selection of food: cereals; fruit; cakes; yogurt; toast; cooked breakfast etc and of a decent quality. As good as any other i've had. Drinks were a bit pricey at the pool bar 4.50 euro's a pint, outside hotel it varied between 3.5 and 2.5 euro's depending upon where you went. Food and drink on the promenade in between Sliema and St.Juilen's but at the Sliema side can be quite cheap in one or two places. There's also a good pizza / pasta restaurant at the entrance to The Point shopping mall ( pretty average 3 storey mall, certainly no Metro Centre of Meadowhall) called CIBO (i think). There are however plenty of places to choose from.

Swimming Pools
Very good, two at front of hotel and two at rear. Of the front two, one is of a decent size and is salt water, the other one smaller with a childrens section. There was always sunbeds available as well as tables and chairs so no need to rush to get up early. You can also access the sea in the bay as there are steps ( the metal ladder type just like a swimming pool) down into the sea just in front of the hotel and at various intervals along the front - good for snorkelling as lots of fish swimming about. At the rear of the hotel there is a good sized tropical swimming pool and again a smaller children's pool. Some of this pool is shaded from the sun but most of the sunbathing area still gets the sun esp on an afternoon.

Buses / Trips/ Excursions
We used the local bus service frequently, a day pass is only 1.5 euro's . Weekly passes are available but not sure how much they are, i've been told 6 euro's. Bus stops nearby opposite hotel and a little further down outside M&S. 15mins to Valleta, 45 mins to Bugibba, 55mins to Medina, 20mins to St.Julien's. We did an organised trip to Gozo / Comino - don't pay the prices advertised in the various operator's brochures as we got a massive discount booking on the promenade, trip cost us 86 euro's but full brochure price was 140euro's ! Trip was okay but it was a flying visit round Gozo, 5mins here, 5 mins there etc, for a good look round you may be better doing the two islands seperately.

There is a promenade which takes you all the way from Sliema to St.Julien's which i would guess is about 4 miles long - walkable but be careful it is very hot on an afternoon. To access the promenade you need to get behind the hotel, either through the shopping mall next door or exit the hotel and turn right then immediately right again, walk for about 5 mins through narrow streets and you will come to the promenade with a selection of restaurants, bars etc and great views. Lots of places to access the sea and sunbath as well , although no sand only rocks which are fairly smooth and flat but they are more comfortable than you would imagine.

Staff
Vast majority were perfectly fine, pleasant and courteous although you did get the impression one or two of them would rather be elsewhere. Reception desk staff were good and especially Julian who was very helpful. Check in was quick and easy.

Overall a good hotel and unless you're used to 5 star luxury i'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed.

Spent a week at the Hotel Fortina. Loved it because it was all effortless and fun for us, a family of six.
Good points: Food was great, location was excellent and there were plenty of shady spots beside the pool - it was 39 degrees on one of the days! Literally 5 minutes to the left of the hotel is Malta's largest shopping mall. You cannt see it from the hotel, it is tucked away behind. Still, had we known, we'd have packed little. GREAT SHOPPING! M&S, Debenhams, River Island etc. It provided a break from sunbathing and being indoors, was cool. Staggering view from front of hotel right over Valetta. The two hotel pools are just fab.
Down points: water in the restaurant is a stupid €4.20 a bottle. Calippos at the poolside were €3.50. Opposite the hotel is a gorgeous ice cream stall and we spent out money there instead. Reception could have been friendlier/smilier.
People here have moaned about the lifts. We were on the 6th floor and took the stairs. It was the only real excercise we got in the day. I don't understand why perfectly fit people, most in their 20s and 30s were waiting for a lift to take them up one or two floors. If those people walked each time, there would be no queues. The stairwells are clean, bright and we never met a soul.
We will go back to Hotel Fortina and would recommend it.

Room Tip: We chose room at front. Noisier but simply wonderful view. The noise of the traffic was drowned out...

What a million dollar view from the hotel pool to capital Valetta! And it was reallly great location for everything - to take a ferry to islands, to take a local or on-hop-off bus, to walk to restaurants or shopping area!
We stayed for 7 days in Malta and were totally pleased both with the hotel, its location and the malta itself. Hotel facilities (except carpets on higher floor corridors) were excellent, especially the pool areas and restaurants in the hotel garden. We warmly recommend hotel Fortina!
