“A good base for "doing" Malta”
Reviewed 28 May 2012

The Diplomat Hotel, on the seafront at Sliema, is a good base for exploring the islands; buses to Valletta and the Gozo ferry pass the door.
The hotel has well appointed rooms, some overlooking the sea, the remainder with a view from a balcony. All rooms are spacious and en-suite. There is a lobby bar, serving light refreshments and a "pub". THe hotel has a restaurant for dinner. Breakfast is served in the restaurant; a buffet of both hot and cold dishes is served. the one thing that let the breakfast down was the tea and coffee; served from a machine they were indistinguishable!

I chose this hotel because of the reviews, and I chose well.
Reception staff is very nice and helpful, maids clean well, rooms are quite big (although the balconys are terribly small), internet works well.

Just one negative thing: in may, where it can be quite hot, the aircon still was put on "heater" and did not cool at all. So I had to leave the window open and was woken up every day at 6:45 by the garbage truck. This could (and should) be changed!

I stayed in The Diplomat for 11 nights.
The only good thing about this hotel is the free and widely available wifi.
The other good thing is that the 21 rooms,3 on each floor, that are at the front of the building have amazing views of the sea.
Other than that this hotel is crap!
The beds are tiny and very uncomfortable, the breakfast room is a dungeon, the quality of the food is disturbingly poor, the hotel is in dire need of a very large scale renovation!
The staff is helpful enough.
The 11 nights I stayed there were noisy, stuffy and not once did they change the sheets.
Cleaning services were below average.
A good laugh was had when I checked the laundry service prices..a t-shirt washed by their service would cost you 5 euro +..haha!
The booking was done by the company I was training with while in Malta and I couldnt change hotels in case you are wondering why I stayed!

Room Tip: Any of the rooms that are on the front of the building on Tower road.

we booked our holiday through Mercury direct and stayed at the Diplomat hotel in Sliema Malta.
the diplomat is rated as a 4 star hotel and although the staff were really great, the hotel should be a 2 / 3 star. Its looking rather aged and in need of a good refurbishment and the a/c in the hotel room was virtually useless. First time in Malta and we were disappointed with the experience - too much building work / traffic / people etc. the historic sites of the island are good, but the tourist experience is !!!.
Malta's main attraction has to be the weather

Will probably be going back to Turkey next holiday.

Room Tip: stay away from Sliema - unless you like busy hoilday spots

We have just returned from a weeks holiday in Malta staying at the Diplomat. The level of service, cleanliness, food and friendliness are first class. We can fully recommend this excellent hotel.
The only negative is the traffic noise on Tower Road. However, this is mostly the case at the majority of sea frontage hotels and is certainly not limited to Malta!

Room Tip: IIf you can, chose a room away from the front road (Tower Road) which is a bit noisey from traffic...

My Mother and I was greeted with friendly Staff welcoming us to the Hotel and Malta. It was our first time in Malta and I was so surprised how supportive the people of Malta and Reception Staff were.We were given advice about Tours, Map of the local area and Transport. Despite my first visit, I felt secure because all the Shops,Restaurant and Transport are accessible.People in the area were very friendly to us. Our Hotel met our needs despite being on a B&B Board and there is a good selection of Food and Drinks at Breakfast and Dinner time.We prefered to have Lunch outside. You must go on a Tour Bus and visit Gonzo. You can book the Tours at Reception or elsewhere depending on what kind of Adventure you want. You can take the Bus 13 outside the Hotel to Valetta (Capital) and you can pay for a Day Pass on the Bus.The scenery is beautiful but there are no Sandy Beaches nearby except St.George's Bay and Golden Bay (North part of the Country) but I was able to take a dip and view Marine life since the water was blue and clear.

At Dinner, they charge 14 Euros per person but there are always Bars and Restaurants open until the early hours. A member of Staff was quick to assist me when I came down with sniffles (mild cold) by giving me lemon and honey while I was having Dinner.I was fine the next day.

The Maltese are Hospitable and the Country is rich with culture, History and Historical Buildings, places to visit, Agriculture, Scenery, Marine life and activities and plenty of Churches.

My wife and I have just spent two weeks in the Hotel Diplomat. The room was always clean and the views were great. Also would like to thank Ian and Peter (chefs) for the great selection of good cooked food. See you next year. Thanks to all the staff.
