Just came back from spending a week here and for the price paid £212 via Travel Republic was fantastic value for money. For just over £30 a night we had a spacious room 2 single beds pushed together to make a double, balcony with fantastic sea view and bathroom with a bath which I had requested. There was a slight problem with bath, the pop up plug would not pop down but we solved this by packing the gap with toilet paper and the water stayed in long enough to bath - problem solved! Flat screen tv in room but only 2 channels, a music one and BBC world news which was great for catching up with what is going on. It is brilliantly located, across the road is a small sandy beach the only one near by. It is about half an hour scenic walk via a costal road into the centre of Sliema for the ferry to Valetta and the hop on hop off bus terminal. The hotel is right on the border of St. Julians and a 20 minute walk takes you into the centre of this resort, which has a Scottish bar and 2 Irish bars. Around the hotel there is only one very small pub (just at the side of the hotel) and they sold cans of lager for 1.20 euros which was cheap. Apart from that Malta is more geared up for restaurants than bars. Small supermarket just up the road back of hotel which again you can buy crisps, nuts etc and cans for 1.10 euros. The hotel does not have a bar but we used to buy a couple of cans and sit on the roof pool area in the evening and watch the sun set - lovely. The pool area is small and has only a few chairs basic but pleasant enough. Staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast offers hot bacon, sausages, scrambled egg and beans. I ate fresh bread rolls with cheese and a bowl of tinned fruit cocktail. They also had cereals and when you are only paying such a small amount of money for the room we thought the breakfast was great. Our room safe was fixed in place and you paid a £10 refundable deposit for key. A few tips for holiday, you need 'jelly shoes' to walk into the sea as it is very stoney. Arriva buses excellent value 2.60 euros for a day pass and there is a stop across the road from the hotel, a week pass is about 12 euros. Malta passes bought in the uk before we left were fantastic value for us but we did loads of sight-seeing - you cannot buy these in the resort, they have a shop somewhere in Valetta which we did not look for. If you want to visit the Hypogeum fantastic stone age catacombs you have to buy tickets 4-5 weeks in advance and they cost 20 euros each but it was worth it. I did not find food too cheap an omlette and chips is about 7-8 euros the same for a pizza, chicken etc more money, we spent loads on having meals out but I suppose that is what a holiday is about. No places to buy rolls or a slice of pizza, so if you are bed and breakfast you will spend quite a bit of money on food. I absolutely recommend this hotel for value for money, we cruise alot and my husband missed the luxury of having nice surroundings but you only use your room for sleeping and changing so it suits its purpose. One last thing my friends went all inclusive in another resort, they have not got the hang of this yet, hardly any choice of food, chips once, only one main course etc. not much choice of drink - so overall I was glad I went bed and breakfast. Have a great holiday we did,

Room Tip: Send e-mail before you leave asking for a bath/double bed/sea view etc.

We were booked to stay here for one week in May, on arrival at 11pm we were told there was a problem with our room and we were being moved to the St Julian Bay Hotel down the road for the week. I can honestly say all the negative reviews of the St Julian's Bay hotel are correct with the extra addition of the fact that the over the course of a couple of days our holiday money was 'dipped' in to despite being hidden in the inside zipped pocket of my wash bag, we were missing over 500 euros, on reporting this to the management of the St Julian's Bay hotel they more or less implied we must have spent more than we thought, to which I pointed out I knew exactly how much was there and think I would remember if I had spent it, they did nothing about it whats so ever. I would not have booked the St Julian's Bay hotel so being put here without a choice was unacceptable. From what I gather its not uncommon for guests who are booked at the Carlton to end up at St Julian's Bay so read the reviews for the St Julian's Bay hotel to make sure 'should' you end up here you would be happy with your accommodation.

Just returned from 10 night stay.Cant really add too much to previous reviews except to agree with them. This is a clean basic 3 star hotel, sea view is worth paying extra for as its spectacular to watch world go by. Take your own kettle and cups if you want an early or late cuppa. Breakfast plenty of choice and good coffee [just add an extra shot of espresso ],i really enjoyed the muesli and yoghurt. Huge choice of excellent restaurants along" prom", but watch out for dog poo! Buy a 7 day pass for 12 euros! for service bus , excellent value, we visited whole of island this way even, if it was a bit squashed at times ,but hey,a great way to meet locals! Can highly reccomend this hotel

Room Tip: sea view worth the extra

We recently spent a wonderful week at the Carlton, staying on the first floor with sea views. A bit noisy at times because the Maltese love honking their horns, but We didn't find this a problem Couldn't fault the breakfast, plenty of choice. The room was basic but spotlessly clean, sheets and towels changed regularly.....very comfy spotlessly clean bed and mattress.
All the staff we had contact with went an extra mile to help when needed and we found them all very nice people. and I cant praise them enough.
The pool on the roof is small but we had more laughs in there splashing about.
We couldn't fault it.
Try Paul's Sea Breeze for evening meals...turn left out of hotel door and walk about 5 minutes its next to the diving school, lovely food and half the price of the cafes opposite.
So what is the caution.........don't leave money in your flight bag unattended while you go out to eat especially the night before you leave and especially on a Monday evening.....you may not notice some of it gone till you reach the airport, when its too late to do anything about it. and you may email the hotel a couple of times and get no reply. it only takes one bad apple.

Room Tip: Higher floors have less traffic noise

I paid just 50 euros for a double room with view on the sea, so this hotel was fine.

Take your own shampoo and shower gel as the soap given is really bad quality.

Breakfast is not really good.

The Internet costs 2,50 euros for an hour.

Don't pack your swimming costume, the swimming pool on the roof is tiny.

There's a bus stop in front of the hotel (St Julian's Exiles), and direct buses to the airport (X2) or to Valetta. It's easy to travel around the Island from here.

There's an HSBC cash machine outside the building.

A friend and I stayed at this hotel for three nights while visiting Malta. We were looking for a cheap, comfortable, clean hotel and we got so much more with the Carlton. First, the location is perfect. In a quiet section of Sliema but within walking distance of Paceville and right along the waterfront boardwalk. We walked to the Sliema ferry to Valetta and to Paceville with no problems. And with its location we ended up with a room and balcony overlooking the water and the harbour - it was spectacular. Second, the staff were amazing. Very friendly and eager to help and make recommendations. It was also a very safe hotel as there was always someone at reception. Finally, the price just simply cannot be beat. For what we paid we were not expecting the five star service and location. The room is definitely basic and small but it was very clean and modern looking. And the buffet breakfast was delicious and the perfect way to start the day. We also spent a couple of hours in the sun on the rooftop terrace/swimming pool one day and it was lovely. Overall, we got more than our monies worth at the Carlton and would highly recommend it to anyone. One negative - the hotel is not sound proof and with marble stairs and flip flops it can get quite loud.

Room Tip: Pay the extra few dollars for a seaview room - most definitely worth it.

Stayed here for 4 nights in the beginning of May. The room itself is quite basic but clean. The location is superb - right on the promenade (close to St Julian) and with the bus stop right next to it. The breakfast was quite good but lacking variety in hot food.

Given the price, I think this is worthwhile option in Malta and I would stay here again.
