The moment we entered the hotel, we could feel the hospitality from the front desk, especially from Mr. Charles Portelli. Our room was marvelous. The staff was very kind and helpfull. Although the hotel is located in the centre of Sliema, one could go for a walk by the seaside, which is on 3 minutes away from the hotel. The hotel is close to shops, restaurants and public transportation.
We recommend this hotel for cleanliness and hospitality.

We booked this through a travel website as part of a package and enjoyed the stay in this slice of Victoriana. This is a great hotel in principle, and we loved it, but they need to work on a few areas.

Things to be aware of:
• The Victoria shares many facilities with the Palace hotel. When you want something on the 9th floor, you have to take the lifts to the 7th floor and walk through the residential part to the Palace hotel lifts to get to the 9th.
• On arrival, €20 per person will be added to you bill to cover the pool towels (these are not the same as those in your bathroom). You get a voucher that can be exchanged for a towel on the 9th floor and vice versa. The €20 will be refunded on check out on return of the vouchers.
• Also on arrival, a one-off €5 'environment' charge is added to your bill. I din't discover this until I checked the bill on the TV. I asked about it and, apparently, it's a contribution towards making the hotel more environmentally friendly and you can ask for it to be waived if you wish. Now, I don't mind supporting this, but I feel I should have at least been told first. I cannot find any information on their website specifying this cost (if it's on there, it's not easy to find). It just felt a bit underhand and is contradictory to the rest of the experience we had.
• This hotel doesn't really cater for children explicitly.
• The tap water isn't suitable to drink (it's sea water with the salt removed). The hotel places mineral water in the room, for which they charge. You can get cheaper mineral water (and a selection of local wines and liqueurs) at the shops on the seafront. Turn left out of the hotel, left onto Triq Il-Kbira then right onto Triq San Vincenz and you'll be on the promenade in about 5 minutes. This also takes you to the Sliema-Valletta ferry.

The pluses:
+ The staff is by far the biggest asset this hotel has: extremely friendly and willing to help. Particularly one of the older receptionists (whose name escapes me), Alfred at the Penny Black bar and Marija in the Copperfield's restaurant. Honestly, the friendliness was like being in a B&B and really enhanced the stay.
+ If you book breakfast in advance you can get it at a reduced rate. The buffet was good, comprising hot and cold options with a couple of Maltese treats thrown in here and there. The only real let-down here was the quality of the juices and coffee.
+ We booked a room with no balcony because it was cheaper and we thought it wouldn't suffer from street noise. We were upgraded to a room with a balcony on check in and realised just how quiet the location is!
+ Parking is free. If you're insane enough to want to drive in Malta (we clearly were) then the hotel shares three levels of underground parking with the Palace hotel (the entrance is just to the left of the Victoria hotel).
+ The dining options are pretty good with various offers on certain days (e.g. Monday is Maltese night). The Copperfield's Restaurant is a daily buffet with a selection of meat or fish and the Penny Black Bar offers pub food à la carte. If you don't want to dine in, there are plenty of excellent restaurants within walking distance along Sliema seafront.
+ Tea and coffee facilities are provided fee in the room.
+ The range of spa and pool facilities was amazing. The indoor pool (7th floor) wasn't as busy as the two roof-top pools (8th and 9th floors).

Some negatives:
- Firstly, and most importantly, the air conditioning does NOT work. Well, it does, but it cannot seem to cool below 25 °C (despite us setting it to 16 °C). We eventually got used to the stifling heat as we felt complaining wouldn't achieve anything unless they were to replace the aircon unit altogether. I can't see this being done any time soon.
- Internet is not free and expensive for what you get.
- There are no minibars in the room, you had to order it via the list (I can't see how that could work really). We guessed they wanted to remove the fridges in the rooms to stop them getting hotter!
- You have to pay €1.60 per day to use the in-room safe. Fine in principle, except it wasn't screwed down! Anyone could have walked off with it.
- The rooms are showing their age and ours smelt musty, but it was tolerable. The maids didn't quite get into all the corners with the vacuum cleaner.
- The bath showed signs of rust and the shower leaked (slightly) onto the floor.

In summary, I would stay here again but I would make sure that the aircon was fixed before booking. Otherwise, I found the Victorian theme charming and the staff really made it worthwhile.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing north. Less sun makes it a cooler room.

Yes, the rooms are becoming a bit scruffy but we've stayed here several times as it's well located for pubs, restaurants and getting buses. It's less than a 10 minute stroll down the hill in either direction to Tower Road or The Strand - feels a bit longer coming up the hill after an evening at Tony's Bar though!
We now get a room on the seventh floor with very efficient air conditioning, which makes a huge difference. This coupled with dark curtains and no noise from adjoining rooms allows a really good sleep.
If you're looking for a lively hotel with loads for the kids to do, find somewhere else, this is a quiet, elegant retreat away from the noise, traffic and intensity of the town.

Room Tip: Forget the busy infinity pool on the 9th floor, the wee one on floor 8 is much quieter and ideal for a cool down.

1. Even if you specify during time of booking that you want a cool room you will most likely not. The AC cools no cooler than 30C. So do not hesitate to ask for a fan. Then the temp. will drop to 28C, but hey... What more to do to survive? Soak a towel before you go to sleep and cover yourself with it! The hotel is eco friendly and in this respect NOT CLIENT FRIENDLY. There are ac's in the corridors, but they are switched off. Same in the lobby and elevators. In fact we think the only place with working ac is the gym.
2. In the hot elevator we made sure we knew where the alarm button was as it was producing curious sounds...
3+4. The hotels states their breakfast buffet is lavish, and after trying we do not agree (8,50 pp upon making the reservation, approx 12pp if you did not include breakfast and 6,50pp if you buy vouchers at the reception desk). We decided to walk down the road and have a healthy breakfast (with free wireless internet - in Malta there is still a down load limit). 1 hrs in the hotel room (not wireless!) 5 euro. You will need a cable handed to you by the receptionist, but you will most probably find it will come out of the socket over and over again (we tried more then 1 cable).
5. The transfer chauffeur was at the airport. We passed by him 3 times, but could not identify him, as he had only a miniscule piece of paper with our name on it and he did not keep it up (he obviously needed the back of the paper to scribble on...).
6. Check in is from 3PM onwards. We found our room not to be ready.
7. Housekeeping stayed away… claiming to the management that our room was cleaned…
8. Maintenance was asked in our presence (22PM) to fix the ac. They never showed up. As they were already asked to fix the ac during daytime we consider this 2 no-shows.
9. We were offered a free breakfast as an apology for having to stay in a hamam in spite of our reservation of a room with a working ac and having to change rooms in the middle of the night. As we did not like their breakfast buffet, we decided not to have a second try. The management did not inform why not and also did not alternatively deduct the costs of the breakfast we did have.

True: I spoke with returning guests. They stated their experience is unlike ours, though the quality of the hotel is running down.

This was our twelfth holiday in ten years at the Victoria and this fact should say it all.
From the moment you enter the reception area and are greeted by the Front Office Manager, Mr Charles Portelli, or one of his excellent staff, you are treated almost like family members with your every request receiving prompt attention.
In the pleasant dining room the food is varied and plentiful. There is also the Penny Black Bar, attended by friendly and happy staff, where one can relax.
The bedrooms are spacious and are kept spotlessly clean by very efficient room staff.
We had a lovely holiday, enjoyed all the more because of the care and attention of all the hotel staff.
