Reviewed 9 February 2014

The Victoria Hotel afforded us three weeks of recovery from the darkness of a Scottish January. Chosen initially because of its quiet location and NO evening entertainment (we like a good night's sleep), the Victoria offered many other benefits: a spacious and pleasantly decorated room, kept scrupulously clean by Angela and her housekeeping colleagues; good food organised on a buffet system, with attentive and well-mannered dining room staff; and star hotel manager, Charles Abela, who made every guest feel very welcome and could, indeed, be described as "a ray of sunshine" himself. And, yes, the beds were comfortable.

It is true that you don't have a sea view unless you're right at the top of the building but the hotels along the front that do have a great view acoss the bay to Valletta are on the main road along the front, which, we have found in the past, can be a bit noisy. It only takes five minutes to walk between the front door of the hotel and the front of Sliema anyway, where you will find a frequent bus and ferry service. St Julians is also just a five minutes' walk in the opposite direction.

I enjoyed being able to use the indoor swimming pool on the seventh floor, a facility shared with the sister hotel next door, the Palace. We walked a lot so didn't feel the need to use the gym equipment in the fitness centre but it is there for those who like to maintain their fitness regime on holiday.

Just two suggestions: it would have been really nice to have had armchairs in our room, in which to catch up on the holiday reading; and a fixed showerhead in the bathroom would have avoided several unexpected episodes of showering the whole bathroom.

Overall, however, we had a lovely time and friends have already made a booking for April.

Room Tip: We asked for and were given a quiet room away from lifts and stairs on the fifth floor. However, we...

Dear RosScotland,

Angela, Charles and the rest of the team will be extremely pleased to know that they were instrumental in making your winter getaway at The Victoria Hotel a pleasant and relaxing one.

We like to treat our guests in a special, unique way and we appreciate the fact that you decided to book your stay with us.

The indoor facilities you enjoyed so much have just had a full refurbishment resulting in very positive feedback from all who have sampled the indoor pool / spa / gym area.

Your comments and suggestions are most welcome as your feedback gives us a clearer idea of which areas need retouching.

We look forward to the pleasure of welcoming you once again at The Victoria Hotel.

Sincerely,

After an unfortunate affair with an inappropriate mistress , power struggles and difficult politics Ferdinand II , king of the two sicillian islands had to exile his brother the prince and his princess to Malta where they settled in Capua Palace in the mid-1800s. Today, the palace is part of The Victoria Hotel and contains a number of suites and magnificent facilities. The neighboring building is St.James hospital. Ask for the suites at the reception.
I stayed in the Prince Franceso Suite ( named so after the Prince who was born here in March 1837) for ten days last year so I knew what to expect. And I was not disappointed this year when I stayed for a week.
Capua Palace has magnificent halls and stairs as the castle it actually is. There is no elevator in the building and there are 36 steps up to the suite. The suite offers a four-poster bed , a spacious bathroom and living room with sofa, chairs, table, fridge and TV. It has a very high ceiling. One can use a large private terrace.
History remains in the walls here and it is wonderful to be able to retreat to this great suite after a long day, or night, out.
At the reception Mr Portelli and his colleagues will assist you with whatever you need - in a friendly way and with a distinct sense of humor .
Highly recommended ! I will certainly be back!

Dear PerInge99,

Palazzo Capua is truly magnificent and yet it offers a peaceful haven in the hustle and bustle of Sliema.

History truly is in its walls and we have kept the tradition of true hospitality with the only intention of satisfying our guests' full needs and welcoming them back for further stays.

We trully appreciate your complimentary review on TripAdvisor, full of historical facts about Palazzo Capua itself.

Looking forward to hosting you once again.

We had a wonderful 5-night stay at the Victoria. From the moment we arrived until the moment we left we felt 100% welcome. Clean rooms, fresh towels each day, good food and such courtesy from the staff. During our stay I celebrated a birthday, and unexpectedly the hotel marked the occasion with a cake and a personalised card - a lovely surprise that only added to the enjoyable experience of our stay. Thank you to all staff, we will definitely consider a return visit.

We booked the hotel through an airline web site and were unsure where we were going to. Our room was big with all facilities including tea and coffee. Staff were wonderful, from our first dinner when they ensured we knew where everything was and how the system worked, to answering difficult questions and running after us when they thought we had left something behind. All were cheerful, welcoming and courteous. Hotel management held a cocktail party to which all guests were invited. We felt nothing was too much trouble and all were eager to please. our room on the 5th floor overlooked the hospital was quiet al all times. Beds as comfortable as at home. Everywhere was spotless. Breakfast was a choice of everything including cooked and traditional. Dinner was self service and could have been 6 courses. Main course choice was wide and reflected the international nature of clientele. We thought prices very reasonable. We hope to return next year.

Room Tip: Our room on the 5th floor overlooked the hospital with distant sea views was quiet.

Our visit to Malta was meant as a celebration of my husband's 70ieth birthday, as well as an escape from the cold dark winter in Denmark, and above all to get to know more about the interesting history of the island. It proved to be a success in all respects!

We fell for the "Victoria" at first sight, its elegant lobby, the cosy "Penny Black" Pub, where we spent many evenings, and our pleasant room. Moreover, the possibility to combine the facilities of the "Victoria" with those of the more modern "Palace Hotel" was perfect.

We experienced great assistance and kindness from all the staff in both hotels, and received excellent help and information regarding our trips on the Island. You will all remain in our thoughts together with our lovely memories of our stay.

The weather was kind to us, mostly sunny and a pleasant temperature for sightseeing. We were most impressed by Malta and its history, and there is still much more we would like to explore.

The evening we landed at Copenhagen Airport we were met by a cold white landscape - quite a contrast to the nice warm days we had just left behind - and since then the Winter has escalated bringing snow and temperatures below zero, so ...we can only wish to come back to Malta again next winter!

Yours sincerely Jørgen and Andrea Toftager-Bagchus

Room Tip: Our room on the 7th floor was ideal: from the balcony there was a pleasant view of the sea.

Re visited this hotel after staying for a short break in January last year, again the service was excellent. The hotel is a ten minute walk down to the creek, which is full of cafés, restaurants, shops and the ferry over to the capital Valletta.
The hotel staff from Charles the front of house manager to the workman renovating some of the rooms are very friendly and welcoming, the bottle of wine and birthday card left in our room was a lovely touch. The newly renovated spa area is very special and next year I'll definitely remember my swimming costume ! Thanks again to everyone for making our short winter break a memorable one - see you again soon x

We enjoyed our two weeks holiday this hotel the welcome and friendly staff and the relations officer were always at hand the rooms were lovely and clean and the penny bar and the restaurant service was good and the first week we were there we had a introduction hour between 6-30pm and 7-30pm to meet the guests. Also the tempt asian restaurant was lovely as well they have two pools one heated and a gymon the top floor. It is well situated not to far from the sea front and a a supermarket just down the road 5 minutes walk if we return we shall visit this hotel again.

Room Tip: try not to have a room facing the hospital they seen to have parties sometimes.
