“Will not return”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2010

Room is very smelly; never bother to ask whether you are non-smoker when checking you in.
Minibar is empty and not cooling, informed front desk twice, first time promised to have it checked soon, second time just replied that the minibar needs maintenance service. Need some ice? have to call room service.
House keeping is lousy, wondering if bed sheets are changed at all, worst of all, found some small blood stains on my bed sheet, informed the front desk, nothing happened, went down and spoke to the hotel manager, he just took the bed sheet away with him. Next day I was told by the house keeper that the stains are not blood but some oil leaked out from their washing machine, hard to imagine that what kind of oil stains look like blood.
Air-con is motion sensor-controlled, had to “make some move” every 10-15 min to keep it on. Room was too hot as I was there in July.
Shower is working according to it own mood, from ice cold to boiling hot in a cyclic fashion, never be able to get it right.
Lifts are ultrasmall (Max 4 persons) and ultraslow, sometimes one of the two lifts loves the underground carparks so much, constantly blinks between -2 and -3 levels and refuses to come up.
Breakfast is under par, almost the same everyday.

I have stayed at The Victoria frequently for business over the last 7 years and have chosen to return for leisure with my family. The rooms are comfortable and the facilities are good with a new gym and roof top pools shared with the new hotel next door.
It is well located for the rocky beaches, restaurants and shops and in my view offers good value for money.
The staff are friendly and exceptionally helpful so the service is excellent.
I have stayed at a number of hotels in the Sliema area and this is definitely my preferred one.

Recently stayed at the Victoria for four nights in early July. Booked the trip based on the excellent reviews on this site.... and was not disappointed. Had a wonderful stay at the Victoria, whilst it’s away from the seafront that's a bonus as it’s in a quiet area, but only a 10minute stroll down to the promenade of Sliema. (Watch the pavements in Malta, they are very polished and prone to be very slippy!).

I found all the staff I encountered in the hotel to be very professional, exceptionally friendly and courteous (quite refreshing in this day and age).

The rooms were clean, decor a little dated, but perfectly adequate. Only issue was the lack of fully functioning air con and a few extra toiletries would have been handy in the bathroom. I'd travelled light with Ryan Air and hadn't brought many with me.

Breakfasts were excellent, lots of choice between hot and cold food, which was constantly replenished by the most vigilant of staff. Bar staff were also friendly and liked to have a joke with you as they prepared your drinks.

I particularly liked the small outdoor pool area, which tended to be very quiet with wonderful views over Valetta and had the most comfortable sun loungers I've ever encountered, perfect for a bit of R&R after a day exploring the island.

In terms of getting around Malta, if you haven't hired a car, head down to the harbour area, where you have plenty of choice of boat trips round the island or you can catch the 'green ferry' to Valetta for just under a Euro each way. There are plenty of buses available along Tower Road, they are an experience to say the least!!! Most don't have doors on them, are very rickety and driven by drivers whose primary focus is to conduct their social lives whilst driving. Very cheap transport at just over a Euro for most trips. We headed up to Golden Bay and ST Paul’s Bay, the latter has a small bar called Barracudas hidden away in the cliff. Whilst it’s a no frills place, it offered friendly service and great food at a very cheap price.

As an alternative transport you can catch a sea plane from Valetta harbour to Gozo, something I would like to do if I go back to Malta.

Taxis are a standard rate to and from the airport, it cost 21Euros to get to Sliema.

I didn't eat at the hotel, so can't comment on food other than the breakfasts, but there are lots of choice of restaurants along the promenade of Tower Road. Had a lovely Italian meal at Piccolo Padre, which I would describe as, more upmarket than Pizza Express, with very fresh food and a good choice of fish.

I really enjoyed my short trip to Malta and found the locals to be extremely friendly and proud of their heritage and culture, I felt safe at all times and believe the crime rate to be very low. I would have no hesitation in returning to The Victoria to use it as a base for exploring the island.

We just got back from Malta today and we stayed at this hotel for 7 nights in a junior suite room.

First of all, I would like to say that staffs were very useful and friendly.

Our room was nice and the bed and pillows were very comfy as well. When we first arrived our fridge did not work but they replaced the new one so it was fine. However, we were not so pleased with how the air conditioner works. We learnt that the doors at the balcony must be shut properly for it to work. The doors were shut and sometimes werent even tounched but the air con kept going off and on. On top of that, it was not cool enough especially for the summer. We ended up taking shower couple times during the night because it was so hot. We called the reception and a very lovely maintainer was sent. Unfortunately, we got told that the air con cannot go any cooler. For a four star hotel, this should be improved.

We loved facilities which share with the sister hotel The Palace. All the pools were clean and we loved the outdoor deck the best. The atmosphere on there and the view were just perfect.

We are a young couple so it was fine to walk up and down the slopes to get to bus stops and places but for older couples, I would recommend to get a taxi on the way up to the hotel or you will be soaked with sweat. Anyway we think the location is close to many nice restaurants and public transports can be quite easily taken (about 5 minutes walking down the slope).

We have been comng to Malta for 14 years and usually stayed in a four star on Graham St Sliema, however we found that the standards were slipping below what we were used to and decided it was time for change.
We booked the Victoria in 2009 with travel agents and due to the excellent service we received we decided to book direct for 2010.
It was very easy to ring reception and agree a deal over the phone from the UK secured our room by a deposit and made arrangements to suit our pocket for the balance prior to arrival.
The staff cannot do enough for you and nothing is too much trouble,we are still in Malta and are discussing and planning our 2011 stay with the head receptionist Charles.
I have read good and bad reviews for all sorts of hotels and can only tell the truth that this is the best 4 star we have found.
The staff are like a family and the guest is part of that family
We hope this information will help genuine people with their choice of hotel in Malta.

The hotel was offering a great deal - 4 nights B&B for £380. Nice location in Sliema within walking distance of the sea. If you are looking for modern trendy rooms, you wont want to stay here, but if you are looking for more traditional rooms without fuss, you will be happy. They do a great deal for buffet dinner at around £15 a head, and a special deal for eating here x3. We were given an upgrade on arrival, but it is worth bearing in mind the following from our experiences. Positives - lovely reception, amazingly helpful staff who bent over backwards to be of service. Clean hotel linked to the more modern 5* Palace hotel next door. Rooftop swimming pools and gym. Nice bar and restaurant areas on ground floor. Negatives - rooms are dated, but well and recently decorated. Big problem re aircon - hotel advertises this as standard but the aircon is linked to movement detectors in room so 10 mins after sitting down or sleeping, it turns itself off defeating its existence. As the weather was so hot, this made the room unbearable, so a fan was supplied too. The Buffet Dinner was good, with plenty of choice, and your minibar is left empty so you can stock it from the local supermarket. Hairdryer, kettle provided in room but (bizarrely) no toiletries except soap. Don't let the negatives put you off - if you are looking for great value with old-fashioned traditional service, this hotel will do you proud. We used the link to Malta Transfers which was also cheaper than the taxis which charge 19 euros from the airport one way. The Malta Transfer was 28 euros return.

Wefound the lowest price for this hotel on Octopus.com.
The Victoria is nly a short taxi journey from the airport, and first impressions were good. We had to wait a little to get to our room as it was still being cleaned but got free drinks in the mean time.
The Victoria is a sister hotel to The Palace and connected, we had full access to The Palace leisure facilities and the roof top pool is stunning.
Breakfast each day had a wide selection to catered to all needs. The room was cleaned and was spotless each day and the staff are incredible friendly and helpful.
The hotel guests were mostly couples and we were by far the youngest, but if you're looking for a peaceful, relaxing holiday and want easy access to the rest of the Island it is perfect.
Good resturants a short walk away (Recommended - Baracuda, St Julians and Cara's which does beautiful cakes).
Overall, we were view impressed.
