“This is NOT a four star hotel”
Reviewed 17 July 2010

Very mediocre hotel. At best a very average 3 star certainly not warranting 4 star status.
Breakfast buffet particularly uninviting.

Stayed 7 nights at the Park Hotel, Sliema. The hotel is labeled as 4 star hotel, in fact compared to European standards its more like a 3 or 3+ star hotel. However this does not mean its any bad. The 4 star most likely goes to the 2 pools. (indoor + outdoor) The hotel is located close to the main (Tower) road. Our room was spacious, so was the bathroom. A nice little fridge was provided too which came very handy to chill our own drinks+fruits. The maid service is excellent, our room was cleaned every day nicely. Breakfast is absolutely fine, those who want a full english breakfast is available, so are cereals, cold cuts, milk, fruit juices, etc. Service is always friendly and helpful. I think Park Hotel is best value deal in Sliema. (especially with the 50 EUR per night including breakfast rate we had!) Recommended.

We spent 5 nights at the Park Hotel. We paid 60 Euros a night for bed and breakfast. The hotel is within easy walking distance of the bus stop for multiple buses going to Valletta or to the ferry for Gozo. There were always large tour groups arriving or departing each day.

There is an electric tea kettle in each room, but you have to buy the tea bags (in the bar). The hotel also charges 8.5 Euros for the use of the in-room safe for 5 days. The breakfast buffet was standard. The hotel offers a dinner buffet each evening for 12 Euros and we tried it once. It was the worst meal I have ever had in a hotel.

Arrived late at night or early in the morning... which ever way you look at it.
Room was ready and waiting once I checked in, quickly...... head down and out diving first thing. The room was cleaned on my return, room basic as most Maltese hotels seem to be. Bar was open and ok..... basic set up. TV for sports in another bar.
Breakfast was good choice...... even a full 'ish' English Breakfast. Self service and all the coffee you could drink..

Never used basement pool, but looked nice.
Never used the roof pool, again looks nice.

Staff were helpful, ordered me a taxi on leaving for the airport.

Thanks and would go again.

The Park Hotel is a 3-star hotel in a good location in a nice part of Malta. If you keep that in mind, you'll be fine, but if you expect 4-stars and all that that implies you will be disappointed.
The decor of the hotel, both in public areas and in the rooms was dated. It opened 20 years ago and the style refects that, for example the curtains appear original.

Our room, sheets and towels were clean.
The room was a decent size and we had a glimpse of the sea from our window.
The bathroom has been recently re-decorated (stylish modern beige tiles on the walls, the white bath looks new, as are the toilet and sink, and the counter is solid oak (although starting to be ruined by the water that gets splashed on it), except for some reason they left in the original (yellowing) hairdryers.
The room heating (we came in winter) worked fine.
The shower was hot and powerful whenever we used it, which are essential for a good shower.
There was plenty of hanging space for clothes in the closet and storage on the shelves.
Most of the staff were helpful and efficient, and usually (although of course with some exceptions) quite knowledgeable about things like bus routes and ferry times.
The location in Sliema is good: a minute from the seafront, with a good (local) restaurant around the corner, and 10 minutes' walk down a street filled with shops to the Sliema waterfront with ferries to Valletta, sightseeing cruises, and other big-name stores and cafes and restaurants facing the waterfront. It is about a half hour bus ride from Valletta and the bus stop is a few minutes' walk down the street from the hotel. We thought this was perfect even at the end of an evening and would not have wanted to stay further away from Valletta.

Our beds were the usual twins pushed together, and very uncomfortable. They were the worst part of our stay.
The bathroom was quite small - two people was a bit of a crowd and because of this, I could not imagine wanting to have a soak in the bathtub. (The bathtub was a normal size, it's just that the bathroom was small--not a place to relax)
As is fairly common in hotel bathrooms there wasn't enough space for wet towels, and since they want us to re-use them for environmental reasons, it would be good to have at least a second towel bar so they could actually dry out.
Tea and coffee are not provided in the rooms, only the kettles and cups.
There is a charge of 7 euros to use the safe deposit box in your room.
The "high speed internet" worked ok, but there is always a lag of a couple of seconds whenever you do something (nowadays, a second is an eternity for computers!) and there is a charge (although fairly cheap) to use it. They are 2 computers off to one corner of the lobby, which sometimes means waiting for somebody to get off.
The restaurant (where the breakfast buffet is) could use some changes, particularly with the yellow curtains on the street-side windows. It doesn't help that they need ironing and are sagging where they haven't been adjusted properly.
The roof-top outdoor pool was closed for the winter, but the indoor pool in the lower level was open, however the chlorine smell was overpowering--strong enough to come up to the lobby at times if the door was left open. We didn't use it, but we did see some others do.
The "gym" is a few exercise machines near the pool and hot tub, which I think wouldn't be very nice for either the swimmers or the exercisers.

Breakfast was a full English, but without any potatoes, and it never changed. There were sausages, bacon, toast, baked beans, eggs, several other choices of sliced bread and rolls with jam and butter and cheese, 3 kinds of cereal, some fruits, tea, coffee, and hot chocolate (from a machine) and watery fruit juices (also from a machine). None of the drinks were very good.

For us, the hotel was absolutely fine, and we would recommend it to anyone else who is happy with a 3-star hotel. Of all of the minuses, the only one that really mattered was the beds. I didn't like the breakfast, but that's personal taste--others were quite happy to pile it on. The other minuses were, at worst, only slightly annoying or cosmetic. We found it clean and decent and all that we expected from a hotel and we'd happily stay there again.

The Park hotel, which is situated up a side street just off Tower road was a very pleasant surprise to me,considering I read a couple of rather negative reviews. The room I was allocated was on the 4th floor which was ideal as I requested a room on a high floor.
My room was clean, spacious and bright.A large twin bed and satellite T.V. were a welcome sight.A previous reviewer only received 2 English speaking channels,
I received 4 which was adequate as I was'nt there to watch television.
The en-suite facilities were very good. The kettle, which was provided for coffee/tea making(you have to provide your own tea/coffee,milk and sugar)had seen better days, but after a good few rinses out,the lime-scale was removed. The chamber maids were very efficient, and if you needed anything, they were very helpful.
The restaurant was very clean and tidy and was always well manned at meal times.
The food at breakfast and dinner was adequate to say the least.
All in all,I had a very enjoyable stay at the Park hotel and would definitely stay there again.
