“Brilliant hotel!”
Reviewed 4 May 2011

We booked an all inclusive five day break at the Fortina Hotel with see malta and were upgraded on arrival to the 5* Fortina Spa. The whole experience was brilliant except for the unfortunate 2 days of cloud and wind(it even rained) but there is quite a lot to do and shops aplenty to wander round. There was a complimentary boat trip and two therapys included plus a short ferry to Valleta which is just across the bay and is steeped in history with numerous museums if you are into that sort of thing.
The changing of the guard in the square outside...Buckingham Palace...yes true was a nice spectacle and the town itself is OLD like an italian town mixed with the middle eastern influences.
The people are lovely and everyone speaks perfect english which is great for us.
There are a lot of italian visitors as sicilly is so close.
The food at the hotel was perfect with a lot of variety and roast beef with yorkshires(plus lots of other things0 on Sunday.
There are restauraunts where you need to book and they are all included with the all inclusive package.
Great gym and the spa has lots of treatments. theres also a hair and beauty salon where the lovlet scottish lass gave me a great head massage and cut and blow dry.
All in all wonderfull and well worth the money.
Im definatley going back!!!!

Arrived late at night/early morning, reception staff were pleasant and very efficient. The spa pool bedroom was still amazing. The food was second to none. No wonder the restaurants gain so many awards. The serving staff were always so attentive meeting our every need.
We had the spa bedroom with pool and this was huge, the tower rooms are much smaller, but you pay for what you get. The 4 star part of the complex I cannot write about, but it seemed OK.
The Thalasso is worth a visit, as is the Spa Santé. Only went once as the room came with spa, Dermalife machine and concentrated sea water swimming pool (floatation pool) which offers underwater massage are also available.
If I could pick a fault it would be the lack of English channels on the TV. But I didn't go there to watch the TV!
The view to Valletta is worth a million Euros as I sat and watched this view for many hours as it changed every minute.
The shopping centre is a short walk down the promenade and has a good selection of shops.
Would I go again? Yes,

Room Tip: Book very early!

I would agree whole heartedly with the other reviewer who stayed in the hotel from 9th April too as her comments mirror mine.

We were married at the Fortina 5* five years ago and returned last year and bought a timeshare week. This was our return trip on the free week they threw into the timeshare deal. It was half board, but this only includes the main buffet restaurant in the 4* for evening meals and breakfasts (this restaurant was upgraded last summer and is lovely), and lunch in the Italian restaurant (if we wanted to swop).

My parents however were in the 4* and I got a super deal with www.greatlatedeals.com which included dine around. Now this is fantastic offering a half board package eating in 5 of the 7 restaurants with a huge set menu at each. HOWEVER, only 1 or sometimes 2 restaurant is open each evening and this would invariably be fully booked. The receptionist was helpful and sweet, but could not magic up a vacancy! I was just glad that we did not upgrade to all inclusive or the dine around package as well.
This is a huge problem as the hotel was full and there were not enough dining places for everyone. Everytime you went down to the reception someone would be complaining.

All of the staff are wonderful and genuinely want to help, greeting you even in the corridors.

There was also maintenance work which was very annoying so near to Easter. The 2 indoor pools were both freezing cold as there were problems with the boilers. The indoor jacuzzi was warm, but absolutely filthy dirty and desperately needing updating. The garden pool bar was also annoyingly closed.

Going to the Fortina 5* is like a comfy pair of old slippers and I fall back in love every time. Everywhere you walk you hear people mention "last time". Wth guests returning year after year I just worry that the hotel is taking the money but not keeping up the high 5* standards.

Yes I recommed everyone to go and enjoy the wonderful Fortina Hotel, but I certainly would not spend thousands of pounds and would find a deal first.

Room Tip: Find a great deal on another website.

After initial problems which were deallt with within hours by the efficient management team, we had wonderful time. Total luxury with attentive staff and wonderful food. The spa treatments in our own bathroom made relaxing a total joy. We have promised ourselves return visits at least once a year, starting in October/November 2011.

Room Tip: Excellent garden view spa rooms with balcony

Returned on 9/4 after 5 days all inc 4 * booking. Arrival at 3.50am allocated 1 room in 4 * and 1 upgraded in 5 *. Confusion at reception but asked following morning to change to be on same floor,& given both rooms at 5 star section of hotel. Worth asking as many guests seemed to be successfully upgraded. Bedroom excellent and very comfortable. Hotel undergoing transformation from winter to summer holidays so pools out of order, garden bar closed, not good choice of sun bathing areas, but front patio area adequate. Food great but don't stress too much on booking into restaurants, it can take time, Valletta buffet quite ample. Breakfast disappointing, have seen much more selection. Resort interesting but not much night life, hotel entertainment rubbish. Go out on hop off bus and do free harbour cruise included. Indoor pools fine, spa interesting but pricey. Average age of guests 60+. I wouldn't recommend taking young children. So, 5* bedrooms, but not much esle, perhaps agree 4* but have been to better, but overall 8/10.

Room Tip: Upgrade bedroom. Book restaurants on arrival.

My mum and I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights this month on all inclusive a la carte in a Tower room. We thought the hotel was beautiful, really lovely spacious room with everything you could need in it, dressing gowns, slippers, hairdryer, bath, roomy shower cubicle, lovely big balcony with table and two loungers, good TV channels, table and chairs in our room, tea and coffee, two wardrobes with plenty of hangers, safe. The cleaning staff were brilliant ad very friendly and helpful! There were several gorgeous a la carte restaurants all with very nice and helpful staff. You could also use the four star Fortina Hotel down the road and its buffet restauarant which we did one morning and it was very nice. We had japanese one night and sat outside by the pool with lights on all the trees. It was lovely! We also ate at the Chinese/ Thai and Mediteranean. The only fault about the restaurants was that it is not marked on the card they give you that you can have breakfast at Taste (Med) at the Spa hotel. We went to the 4 star the first day and only happened to speak to another couple who said we can also use Taste for breakfast which was much nicer. If you are out for lunch you can pop in there on your way out and ask for a take away box and put a few rolls cakes and fruit in it to save you money wehn you are out. The manager of taste was only too happy to do this for me.
The 'Spa' was rubbish! We were given a free Spa Sante session with our stay and this included using all the different shower rooms, ice, meditation room, jacuzzi, pool, sauna etc. We were excited about using it but when we got there it was a maze, no staff around and when they were they were unhelpful, nobody offered to show us around as we must have looked lost, the pool was tepid and empty, the jacuzzi wasnt very warm and was awkward to sit in, the various shower rooms were out of service and when you opened doors you saw building materials and empty baths. The meditation room was laughable with one silly jet of water making shapes on the ceiling. We asked staff why it was like this and they shrugged and said 'the pool is 25 degrees' I said it is not! They said 'We have measures madam!' Then added that maintenance were due round. Do not bother with the Spa and definitely do not pay to use it!
The Reception staff were all stuck-up and not friendly or over helpful. We didnt get a welcome or a smile nor a 'hope you enjoyed your stay' at the end. One young slim dark haired man even served another woman whilst I was asking him something important which was very rude. I really think they need a course in customer service!
I would still stay at this hotel again and loved the rooms and the food and drink! I would say dont bother with the Spa or reception staff at all.
The location is great as its next to a shopping mall The Point, 5 mins walk from boat trips and other shops and restaurants, 5 mins sail to Valetta which is lovely for walking around. We got a free harbour cruise from the hotel which is very nice to do.
We did a boat trip to Gozo and Comino and the Bloue Lagoon which was a lovely day. Most people were very nice and spoke English.

Recently returned from a weeks stay with my 82 year old mother.
The view from our room of Valetta was wonderful. The hotel is very conveniently located and if you are travelling with someone whose mobilty is impaired it is excellent. We arrived later than expected and just before the restaurant we were directed to was about to close. It wasn't a problem and although we had the dine around package my Mum chose to eat there as the meals were more to her taste. She also enjoyed the entertainment in the evenings and there were some guests who would have graced the Strictly Come Dancing final who added to the experience. During the holiday my Mum was ill and the staff could not have been more helpful and kind. The GP who came out to see her twice was fantastic.
It's interesting having read some other reviews how varied they are. I saw no evidence of "Saga Louts" at all and the food was perfectly acceptable and plentiful. The guests ranged from babies to people like my Mum.
There were some grumpy guests on extended stays for the winter who were clearly having a miserable time but they seemed the kind of people who would be doing that anywhere.
Thank you very much we had a lovely relaxing stay and thank you for the kindness towards my Mum.
