“Great hotel, ideal location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 March 2013

Just returned from a week at the Fortina 5 Star and it was most enjoyable. Our Spa room on the 3rd floor was equipped with all sorts of pampering gadgets and we made full use of them. A technical glitch with the Dermalife bed was quickly fixed but a fault with the shower took 3 attempts to resolve. Although slightly annoying, this didn't detract from our enjoyment of this excellent hotel. We opted for half board and this gave access to the a la carte menu at all the on-site restaurants. All were excellent except the Indian (Sa Re Ga Ma) which was disappointing. Breakfast at Taste was a daily highlight and even a glass of bubbly was available if required. One of the best reasons for choosing this hotel is its location. Busses to Valetta are frequent and a cruise of the Grand Harbour from the nearby ferry point is not to be missed. The new shopping centre at Tigne Point is just round the corner (out of the hotel and turn left) where you will find a supermarket and lots of other retail outlets. When you visit Valetta don't miss Upper Barrakka Gardens and the wonderful view over Grand Harbour. If you arrive around 11.45, grab a place by the railings and enjoy the military society firing the 12 o'clock gun in Battery Park directly below. Top Tip: a 7 day bus pass is excellent value at 12 euros and you can travel throughout the island.

My husband and I enjoyed a really wonderful two week holiday at this hotel.
The location was superb with sun and see breezes, palm trees and warm ocean.
The staff made the holiday so memorable for us and nothing was too much trouble.
Our chambermaid, Sarah, was a pleasure; always smiling and keeping our room spotless...( little touches of blossoms placed on bed was a real treat!)

Fun was to be had daily at the Adult bar with Junius keeping us all entertained and the drinks well-made and delicious. The food in all the restaurants was plentiful and interesting with night entertainment making the end of the day enjoyable. We will be booking for next year!

Room Tip: We were in the adult side of the hotel but certainly enjoyed having children about the place too.

I have recently returned from a five night holiday at the 5* Fortina Spa Resort in Selima, Malta. This hotel is very good, has excellent facilities, but the reason I say beware when booking is that I made this reservation through Last Minute.com and confirmed with them on several occasions that it was the 5* Resort we were booked in. However, we arrived in the early hours of the morning and after reporting to the reception of the 5* resort, we were directed to the Hotel Fortina around the corner. This hotel is old and no way a 4*, the bedroom was smelly and generally run down, the shower head was hanging off and I was totally dissatisfied. After breakfast in what I could only describe as a self service canteen I complained to the receptionist, who after one hour, confirmed that we should be in the 5* spa resort and we were allocated a sea view room and had the a lcarte choices in the hotel restaurants. This was only a five night break and it was unfortunate that we lost one night and only got what we were entitled to after complaining. Apparently this is not an isolated case as we were talking to a man from Bahrain in the airport lounge who said he had looked at booking the Fortina Spa Resort but had heard that people were being put in the lower grade Hotel Fortina and not the 5* Resort, so he chose another hotel.

Visited here recently for a wedding and found this hotel to be exceptional in every way. We had a room overlooking the pool with a Jacuzzi on the balcony. Our room was huge and was kept clean to a high standard. When you walk across the road to the next pool it gives you more space to relax. The wedding couple had a spa room which was fantastic, we chilled by the pool on the roof top till late at night. I would always go back to this hotel. Great stay. If you want to be pampered then visit the spa, it'll be worth it.

Once initial problems concerning our booking were resolved, we enjoyed a happy and relaxing week at the Fortina Spa Hotel in Sliema. Our room was large, clean and comfortable and the food served in all the restaurants was of a good standard – our favourite, by far, was ‘Taste’, where both the food and the service were first rate. The hotel is also ideally situated – close to bus stops linking Sliema to many other parts of the island, the ferry to Valletta, and the new shopping mall at Tigne Point.

Our first days, however, were marred by considerable carelessness and inefficiency on the part of the administration and day-time reception staff. Our online booking had clearly been for a sea-view room with balcony, half-board, in the 5-star ‘Fortina Spa Resort Hotel’. Our arrival at the hotel, however, was far from welcoming, since we were told immediately that we were in the wrong place, and should have been checking in in the older 4-star sister hotel next door (the ‘Fortina’). The manner and attitude of the receptionist left much to be desired. Fortunately, we had taken with us hard copies of all the booking documentation, and eventually, having spent several anxious minutes sitting in the hotel lobby, we were informed that ‘a mistake’ had indeed been made – there was no real apology. We find this hard to understand since the hotel management claims elsewhere that the two hotels are ‘not the same, and are marketed and segregated accordingly’. Having read further reviews of the ‘Fortina Spa’ since arriving home, we were alarmed to discover that this was not an isolated occurrence - other guests have been subjected to exactly the same treatment. One review questioned whether such problems arose from downright incompetence or a deliberate attempt to deceive. So be warned, if you book a room yourselves online at this hotel, take along copies of all the supporting documentation – you might well need it.

Sadly, our problems did not end there. Having admitted that we had indeed booked at the ‘Fortuna Spa’, they were unable at that late stage to give us the type of room that we had actually paid extra for. Instead, we found ourselves at the side of the hotel, above the entrance to the road tunnel below and overlooking adjoining blocks of flats. Unless one went out onto the balcony and looked over the wall, there was no view of the sea whatsoever! After further visits to reception, we were fortunately moved after the first night to a room at the front of the hotel – a room which enjoyed excellent views over Valletta and sunshine right through the day!

For a 5-star hotel, the system for booking meals was utterly chaotic. It took the reception staff three attempts to give us a card containing the correct details. The first contained the wrong room number and on the second, they had circled ‘B&B’ rather than ‘half-board’, with the result that, when we went for our evening meals, we had to stand aside while our credentials were checked – all quite embarrassing. The hotel and room documentation was also inadequate. Our booking, as we learnt from a far more helpful night receptionist later in the week, included complementary use of the spa facilities, but no one told us about these until it was too late – they were not available on Saturdays and Sundays, the last two days we were there! Surely, such information should be clearly presented in a written form to guests. Furthermore, clearer signs showing the location of the various swimming pools and spa facilities would be desirable.

Potentially, the ‘Fortina Spa’ is a great hotel, and it is certainly a wonderful base for exploring Malta - but the administration really needs a bit of a shake-up!

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front of the hotel over-looking Valletta, but bear in mind that those rooms on...

although this 5 star hotel was good and the dine around food idea is exellent also the room attendents and dining staff very efficient and friendly the reception hall and the strange 2 desks with not very helpfull girls at reception spoilt the 5 star feeling. also more information as to where to find the outdoor pool area for the 5 star guests would help as they are in the 4 star fortina hotel next door and the pools and garden in the 5 star are in the shade and no good to sit in early season.. also be aware that you will be acosted by time share touts in the hotels .the bedrooms on the garden side are also quite dark and lights are needed to be on ..the lounge bar was a friendly place to chat and always had some nice music to listen to in the evenings .bar staff were a bit slow at times exept for a waitress who was good ,and things went better when she was there.we would say this hotel is more 4 star than 5 exept for its dining experience and spa.

Room Tip: rooms overlooking valetta are sunny
