“Almost excellent”
Reviewed 11 January 2014

Went for the New Year and then a rest. The only problem was the temperature in Lime's Bar, it was too cold for comfort except for New Years Eve when the crowds kept the heat up! The Spa facilities were excellent and the staff friendly and helpful. We had a delightfully spacious room which has started to be refurbished - laminated flooring instead of carpet - and a balcony overlooking the harbour and Valleta. New Year's Eve fireworks were brilliant from thebalcony. If you keep watch on DealMalta you can get reduced rates for the Hop on, Hop off bus rides, well worth the money in if you stay in St Julien's or Sliema, and deals on the Fortina's hair salon, 'Heaven'. A great holiday and shall be returning.

Room Tip: The higher the quieter especially in the summer. The views and balconies on the front are great and...

I have just come back from the amazing Fortina Spa Resort. The property is fantastic and I had a lovely spa bedroom. The view is stunning from the front of the hotel. There's something like 10 restaurants to chose from (I was spoilt for choice) and drinks on the Terrace at sun set is out of this world. I have some amazing pictures! Staff are all so friendly too and can't do enough. I'm definitely going back again soon!

Room Tip: If you can definitely go for the Spa bedroom at the front :-)

I just love the Fortina Spa Hotel, I have visited each year in June along with seven of my girlfriends ,the all inclusive is such fantastic value for money, with a superb choice of restaurants and facilities. We had no desire to leave the hotel as all our needs were met. The centre pool bar is perfect for a well earnt cocktail after doing a few strokes cooling down. The restaurant "Fresh" which is set aside the pool, is consistently superb, with the Friendly Rita, always ready with a welcoming smile... We usually book a sea view room, which I can tell you has a amazing views. I can highly recommend this hotel for its position, facilities and service.
Anita P.

Room Tip: There all good, but my personal preference is always a sea view.

We had an amazing stay at this hotel the veiws were excellent, and we were wowed by the food it was top quality it is very good that they had indian, chinese, British and a few more different types of food not just one type or else it would be boring! We were going to bring are duaghter but there were no kids allowed! Sliema is the shopping capital of malta so I personally liked it=-).It is also good if you feel like exploreing Malta because it is right next to the capital of Malta (valleta) so good all round.I dont think it is a 5 star because the spa was quite bad because the sauna wasnt hot! But all round we loved it!

It's very confusing there are 2 hotels linked together one is the Fortina ( 4 *) and the other the Fortina Spa (5*) even the web sites do not make this clear. The Fortina is the older original building and the Spa the newer build. They share facilities such as pools and restaurants. We stayed at the Fortina Spa and on the whole found it a very pleasant hotel with large, clean well equipped rooms and in the (5 * there are carpets!), but there were a few issues that prevented a fully enthusiastic review. Firstly readers need to beware bedrooms on lower floors around the numbers 250- 270 and upwards to 550-- 570. We woke having arrived after midnight to the sound of traffic and opened the patio doors to realise we were overlooking an underpass and a routeway to the major shopping mall next door and facing a concrete wall. Not quite the view we imagined.
The hotel were able to relocate us to the 7th floor but still over the road but we could now see over the concrete to Valetta and the harbour .Sea views all had bath only or shower over bat and the only rooms with walk in showers rather were on the side. These bath rooms were kitted out for disabled with hand rails and a very low sink to be used seated. A low sink with a tiny 3 legged chrome stool is impossible for someone with poor balance to use - if one got down there it would be impossible to get back up! There is a common misconception by hotel designers that restricted mobility means wheelchair and by only catering for wheelchair users makes the bathrooms even more unsuitable than a standard design.
The food was good particularly Taste although the tables are very squashed together - they could do with reapportioning some of space in what appeared to be underused speciality Thai, Indian and Japanese restaurants. Taste is also the main breakfast restaurant (unless using the self service facility in the Fortina Hotel) and there were delays for tables and this was when the hotel was not fully booked. It also would be nice if they could get rid of the fishtank with several rather sad looking lobsters with tied claws floating aimlessly around. The Italian restaurant was disappointing with some mediocre pizzas ( Pizza al Mare - was undrained tinned tuna with some partially defrosted prawns making a rather soggy disaster) . Table 1 at Fortina was also good.
All the restaurants have different opening and closing times and days when totally closed and bookings have to be made 3 days in advance! Again very confusing. We'd only just got the hang of it when it was time to come home.
There are obviously different definitions of "all" in the "all inclusive". At Fortina Spa the all inclusive was only on the very mediocre Maltese wine, Maltese gin and other spirits which had slightly different flavours to the more international brands.
All inclusive also provided for sandwich or cakes at any time - we asked for a sandwich at 3pm having got back late from a trip and we were presented with 2 plastic containers of sandwiches from the fridge - we had to ask for napkins and plates. They were triple decker ie 3 slices of bread , no butter and a microscopic daub of tuna paste .
The spa bit was a labyrinth of corridors in the bowels of the building linking the two hotels , none of it looked particularly inviting and treatments were pricey. It also left the Fortina hotel front entrance with a rather dank swimming pool aroma.
The location is handy for Valetta - a 20 minute local bus ride or ferry crossing
Clearly the star ratings in Malta are different to UK so don't be misled.

Room Tip: Beware the lower floors on the non pool side ie facing Valetta harbour these are above a busy road a...

Dear judith58,

Thank you for your posting. We are disappointed to hear that your stay at the Fortina Spa Resort did not match your expectations. We would like to advise you accordingly;

We apologise for the inconvenience of the noise from the road - this is a very uncommon complaint as it is the opposite of what we are usually told. We will look into the matter further.

Sea view rooms all have a bath with an overhead shower and also a separate standing shower. As do the rooms that require wheelchair access - the only difference in the bathroom is that the sink and toilet are different and the separate shower is accessible by wheelchair in those specific rooms.

Kindly be assured that your comments regarding the food and restaurants have been passed onto the appropriate personnel for action to be taken accordingly.

Wishing you a Happy New Year!

Kind regards,
Fortina Spa Resort team
