Paid extra to upgrade to this hotel after deciding we would like to take an all inclusive option which the Fortina 4 Star Hotel which we had initially booked did not offer. In addition we were disappointed to find when we arrived that whilst we had paid the tour operator extra for a sea view room in the Fortina 4 Star Hotel we had been allocated a garden room.
We took a tenth floor sea view room at the Fortina Spa which has wonderful views overlooking Valletta.
The room was clean and spacious. The balcony was large enough for 2 sun loungers and was a nice shady place to relax in the hot afternoon sun. The bathroom had both a bath and walk in shower which and was a good size. The chamber maids kept the room very clean and tidy and were very pleasant and helpful. It was slightly irritating that the hotel rooms may not be cleaned up until 4.30 pm.
We thought the food in Taste was excellent and the staff were very welcoming and courteous.
As regards to being on the tenth floor it was annoying to find that out of 2 lifts on occasions only one was in use.
We enjoyed using the indoor swimming pool although it is a bit of a maze to enter through the Fortina Spa entrance. The pool the safety rail brackets are broken in places and are insecure.
We feel that the terms and conditions should be made clearer on all inclusive packages.
We would love to return to this hotel although bearing in mind the Fortina Spa and Fortina 4 Star appear to be associated hotels we would be concerned that we may turn up and find that we have not been allocated the type of room requested.

Room Tip: Valletta view room on tenth floor was amazing. Some road noise but not too bad at this level.

We booked this hotel at fairly short notice through a travel agent and were not disappointed. We found we had been upgraded to a sea view room on the 9th floor. Initially the traffic noise was a problem and even though we were quite high up, we did get fed up with constant noise, especially at night, however, this balanced with the stunning views of the harbour and Valletta, and we got used to the traffic after a few days, especially as it was drowned out by the fireworks! The room was cleaned well, and good room service with a friendly face each evening asking if we needed anything. The bathroom was very well appointed with generous walk in shower, separate bath with shower attachment, towelling robes etc. It was a huge room, very spacious with arm chairs and a large balcony with sun loungers - unusual to find proper sun loungers for which we were very grateful. The sun went off the balcony by lunchtime which is a bonus in July when it is so hot. We enjoyed a cooling breeze in the afternoon. The downside was that the lifts (only two of them for 18 floors!) kept breaking down - we did have to walk up and down twice, and that was worrying being on the 9th floor, and we were not confident being in them! The garden area was lovely, plenty of shade, lovely pool, but we found that towards the end of the week it got busier, and it seemed that most of the people came from the 4 star Fortina which adjoined us, and we felt that the garden should have been for the 5 star hotel, as there was not much space by the time we left and there were more children using the pool. There was quite a contrast between the two hotels,as was evident from the toilet off the garden area in the 4* which was not cleaned enough and remained without soap for two days, still no soap when we left, and the whole atmosphere was different from the 5*. Although we could have eaten in the buffet at the 4* it was very 'canteen like' and not attractive and quite a contrast from the excellent waiter service in the restaurants around the garden. Table 1 which was the only one available on our first night was very poor in comparison to the others. The booking system for the restaurants was not a problem if you thought ahead, and we enjoyed the atmosphere and the meals - the Taste and Thai being our favourites. We only tried the Indian once and did not particularly enjoy the meal - even the poppadums were extra. The service at them all was excellent, and the breakfast wonderful, even free Vodka if you wished!
Would definitely recommend half board as otherwise the restaurants are all quite pricy. We felt we got very good value from half board. For those like us catching a very early flight (leaving hotel at 0430 it would have been appreciated if we had received a small packed breakfast, ie roll and cheese. Sliema is very convenient for buses, shops, although quite busy so not sure what it would be like later in July and August. All in all we enjoyed our break there very much.

Room Tip: Sea view worth it particularly in high summer as cooler.Stunning views, but need to be on a high flo...

I have stayed in Malta many times at mainly 5 star hotels. Mixed feelings about this hotel which I have just returned from, we upgraded to a fabulous suite complete with its own pool and various spa facilities. Very comfortable and well maintained suite very friendly and helpful cleaning staff. Helpful-polite reception staff, and waiters however bar staff not so helpful/ friendly. No ice making facilities however room service will deliver, no complimentary water and room coffee poor quality Breakfasts just ok, one evening we ate at the Indian restaurant and the bill was double the amount it should have been half hearted apology. Had difficulty differentiating between 4 star and 5 star facilities in this complex. Without the upgrade I would have felt I was staying in a 4 star. Gym being refurbished but could use a nearby gym which took considerable organisation & wasn't great. Location was good and pools lovely and clean.

Room Tip: Rooms with pool are expensive but lovely not suitable for people with mobility problems

This was our fourth visit to this hotel, which says something about it as we wouldn't visit anywhere more than once if it was no good. The staff are very good and helpful, although reception can get very busy if you don't visit it at the right time. (Like most hotels I guess) The dine around restaurant arrangement can be quite confusing and does need to be simplified as there are several versions as to where, when and what you can eat. We had to change rooms half way through our fortnight (which we expected) but Reservations were unable to tell us which room we were moving to until a couple of hours before hand. Considering we booked here in February I think Reservations could have been more on the ball. On the plus side the hotel is beautifully situated with wonderful views of Valletta and has very good facilities and restaurants. The staff are very good, helpful and polite.

My parter and I have stayed at the Fortina 5star on eleven occasions so clearly like it, how ever this last time we took my partners recently widowed mother to show our favourite view, ( sea view room in the tower) . We always book a sea view room and pay for it! This time (21st June ) we were told that there we none available and were 'upgraded to a very large spa room' fantastic if you want a hot tub and sauna but we come for the view of valletta from our balcony. So although happy with malta Fortina let us down. Then I read in another review on here, that someone who booked though Saga was given a sea view room without requesting and I suppose paying for one.

This is our second visit to the Fortina Spa Hotel but it won't be our last. As the title suggests the hotel in a good location and is close to the bus stops and the Ferry.
The rooms are well furnished and have a roomy bathroom, the room we occupied had a feeble over the bath shower (a cubicle would have been so much better) but the bathroom and bedroom were cleaned daily and the toiletries replenished daily. The courtesy tray was well used by us and that also was replenished daily. The beds are comfortable with amazing duvets and the air conditioning is super effective.
I did not like the pre booking of a restaurant for the evening meal and until the evening meal was booked I was not content, I would have preferred to have gone for an evening meal when I felt like going rather than when I had actually stated a time for eating, each day of the holiday was different and some days we were tired and would have preferred an earlier meal rather than the time booked. We used the Thai restaurant and this is very good with a good selection of dishes and nicely presented, we also used Table 1 which was good and the evening menu had a good selection of foods but the lunch time menu was rather limited. My favourite restaurant is Taste and although the service is leisurely the wait is well worth it, the presentation of the foods is superb and the taste really is the tops, the staff work very hard and meet every whim and need of the customer, and always wear a smile and are very friendly. Rita is the best!
We didn't use the Japanese or Indian restaurant and the Italian is little more than a Pizza parlour.
This hotel needs a face lift and modernising but it is a comfortable establishment and serves a very good holiday.
The bars (the Lime bar and the island bar) are worked by very friendly staff who prepare and serve all types of drinks and beverages and a pleasure to visit.
I didn't use the pools neither did we use the Spa.
The ferry terminal is a about a half a mile walk away from the hotel, and the ferry runs over to Valetta every half hour, there is a red mini bus taxi service at Valetta which will take ferry passengers up into Valetta for a Euro each and well worth the ride (it is uphill all the way. On your return to the ferry at Valetta make sure you don't miss the tunnel which takes you down to the ferry terminal (we missed it last year)
There is a garden (Baraka gardens) in an elevated position overlooking the port and has a very good vantage point and so good for photographs.
In my opinion Sliema is a good place to stay for many reasons (some of which I have mentioned) and the Fortina Spa is a good hotel for the holiday. Each and every member of staff is friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Garden rooms are quieter but have little sun

Booked a spa room again, through deal-today half board reasonably priced, arrived a few hours before check-in (2pm) to drop of bag etc. and let them know we were there just incase a room was ready early, however was told to come back at 1 for room, went back and it wasn't ready, got three other room numbers none ready poor boy on reception was getting annoyed, don't blame him, cleaning staff had no rooms ready and they should have, anyway finally got room, nice room same as before bit dated, like over ten yrs and still same stuff as when it opened.
This time we went to the spa unfortunately it was rather a confusing experience, like an underground maze of rooms and no staff in sight to help, we eventually found the indoor pool which admittedly was really large, had a good swim then went to the sauna which was not as warm as it should have been and not one that could be made hotter either, steam room was like large but had funny smell and not too clean, opted to go back to room and use our own instead so as far as the facilities go, i won't be returning to them anytime soon, also there seemed to be quite a few locals there using the facilities,if you have visited Malta before you will know they are not the quietest people in the world, so get the spa room and relax in the privacy of your own room.
My main problem was going for food in the evening, went to the buffet at la vallette but there was nothing there i would eat, instead we opted for the Indian (had been before a couple times found it very good) however this time as it was half board i felt like the food was of substandard quality chicken was not melt in the mouth like usual this time it was chewy and had bits of fat on, rice was hard too, just wasn't quite the same as before and there are restrictions on what you can eat too. Breakfast in the morning again tried the buffet did not like the look of anything there, went to taste (or more appropriately tasteless) not the best food in the world.
I would advise booking this room to anyone just not any other part of this excuse for a 5 star hotel as you will be very disappointed unless you have no standards that is!!

Room Tip: Go for the spa room on room only basis, feed yourself elsewhere (make sure you get a good deal for t...
