We booked a Wellness Rejuvantion Room, which was not as 'modern' as the pics on the internet, but when discussed with reception they were happy to switch. The newly refurbished rooms on the 15th floor were gorgeous, but we decided to retain the lesser decor, for the spectacular views of Valetta & to enjoy the maximum sunshine on the balcony. The breakfast was very good plenty of choice, despite our 10am start some mornings & the staff were very friendly. By booking through the hotel we had a complementary boat trip - we declined the freeby of spa treatments for 2 hours of 'time share' presentations & there was no issue or further contact after that. My family organised room service via the UK as a surprise & i'm told the hotel was very helpful went out of their way to accomodate their needs. Local bars were very nice & clean & modern. Buses were cheap so definetly worth the adventure to Mdina & St Julians & Valetta, at no more than 1EURO. We had 3 treatments each & all of them were good & rounded off our relaxing break perfectly.Great time had by me & my hubby. Would definetley go back again

travelled with 15 young Athletes who i might say were told on a daily bases that they were a credit to us by the other guest. Some of the staff bent over backwards for us and some were very unhelpfull. We understand that this time of year mainly caters for the older clientell but the hotel put absolutly nothing on for us at all by the way of entertainment. The food was not the best and found that when we could book a resturant we was always left with the last sitting. Reception staff were really quite rude and never informed us on anything to do with the hotel. The staff in the spa were the heplfullest we found, but overall it was as if they didn't really want us there.

We have been going to the Fortina in January for a week or so for about the past ten years, with a couple of breaks (one of which was last year). The Fortina in Winter, caters for the British, but this year there were a good contingent of Italians who added some variety.
The thing is, how can the hotel continue to offer a high class of all inclusive without increasing its prices significantly, when the Pound has devalued about 40% against the Euro?
The answer seems to be by cutting some corners and costs. This depends on the deal that you are on. Ten years ago, everyone was on four star all inclusive, but now there are a number of options between bed and breakfast to all inclusive five star.
This year, the buffet restaurant was closed at lunchtimes. However, for 4* all inclusivers, it meant that you could use the exclusive Taste and Hibiki Restaurants, which are excellent. However, rather than grabbing a quick lunch, you need to leave at least an hour. If you are using the Italian/Pizza, and there is a party in, better to leave two hours for lunch. I would suggest that the Italian is given a wide berth, as it is simply not very good.
My other main issue is the lifts/elevators. This is a hotel of 8 floors with a breakfast/buffet restaurant in the basement. Given the demographics of winter holiday makers from the UK, it was problematic that the lift to this restaurant was out of commission for 90% of our stay. The lifts in this hotel have never been the best, and this might be taken into account for special requests.
One of the bars also seemed to be closed most of the time, and the entertainment, which is also historically naff, was naffer. It is one thing to have a DJ playing music, but to produce a man with a load of mp3 tracks on a computer, and no patter is a bit grim.

Nevertheless, I still love this hotel, will go back again, and Sliema is a great place for a holiday in Malta, but only if you don't want the beach

Not a reflection on individual staff members, but the poor customer service rate is a reflection on the hotel management, who need to get their heads out of the clouds where customer service is concerned. I predict this establishment will suffer badly over the next few years, especially when the new Resort opens nearby! We first visited this hotel in February 2007 and though we enjoyed our visit, we were not in a rush back because it had a fair few weak spots. Given that it was at the time a new venture, we hoped that it would improve as it went along. Not so! While the spa bedrooms and their facilities are good, we found that they suffer from a lack of natural light. They are also, at this stage in danger of becoming a little jaded, if maintenance etc is not kept up. The hotel common areas, lack ambience, atmosphere and warmth. Not a touch of five star quality present. Not a place to linger in. The reception area is not as welcoming as they probably like to think, or perhaps not, as the owners dont appear to be very interested in first impressions. There isnt a Manager in sight! It appears as if the staff run this hotel. Six restaurants available to all inclusive guests. But, of these, I would only recommend the Thai, Japanese and Taste. The Pizza restaurant is okay for a light meal or snack but not five star standard. The Teppanyaki table meal has an overpriced supplement for all inclusive guests. We availed of the hotel transfer at a cost to us of €40 return and for this we got a pickup by what was a member of staff in a small private car and a transfer back in a dirty, rickety Captain Morgan minibus! This being transport provided by another affiliated venture of the hotel. Dont use the transfer service. Classy! In the main, the restaurant and bar staff were extremely helpful and friendly. My overall impression was that we should be gratetful that we could stay there. Nobody except the TIMESHARE HAWKS appear interested in getting you to return. Keep away from their presentations by the way. They tell you it takes a minimum of an hour, if they were being honest, they would say half a day.

I have just returned from a wonderful break over Christmas and New Year at the 5 star Fortina Spa hotel. I find the comments of other reviewers strange. I can only assume they stayed at the Fortina 4 star and not nextdoor at the spa hotel. The food selections are fantastic, and quality excellent. The breakfast meal is served in the Taste restaurant, plenty of choice, and the staff will certainly aim to get you something if it is not on show. The breakfast served in the Valetta restaurant (4 star) is a large room and I guess could be not to everybodies taste.
I have found all the staff fantastic, especially Rita & Charmaine in Taste.
I cannot praise enough the food we had whilst staying there, I have eaten in many countries and congratulate the chefs for their continual high standards.
Finally I will say please don't mix this hotel up with the Fortina hotel next door, The Fortina Spa with it's lovely spa bedrooms, excellent food and drink is worth a visit.

We made the most of our stay Malta, but would not stay in this hotel again. Terrible staff, souless bar, not very good breakfast, and overpriced spa. My massgae was probably the worst I've ever had! Caters maily for all inclusive guests.
